Modulation of chromatic reversibility of polydiacetylene Langmuir Schafer (LS) films by cadmium ion Ad/desorption

  • Although the reversibility of 10,12-pentacosadiynoic amino meta-acid(PCDA-mBzA) against temperature and pH was reported, the modulation of reversibility by ion adsorption at terminal functional group has not been investigated. In this work, we developed a simple method for modulating the reversibility of PCDA-mBzA films upon a thermal stimulus by cadmium ion adsorption inducing the breakage of the outer hydrogen bonding of two hydrogen bonds, which are responsible for the reversible properties of PCDA-mBzA. External reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ER-FTIR) analyses revealed that the hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid groups was broken through ion adsorption and only a single hydrogen bond between the amide groups remained in the PCDA-mBzA polymer. In addition, PCDA-mBzA films could recover their original property through cadmium ion desorption. These results present that the transition between reversibility and irreversibility can be modulated artificially simply through the adsorption and desorption of metal ions.

  • 폐 니켈-카드뮴 전지의 재활용을 위하여 효율적으로 카드뮴과 니켈을 분리할 수 있도록 이온치환 반응을 이용하여 선택적으로 카드뮴을 분리하였다. 폐 니켈-카드뮴 전지 내의 전극을 분쇄하여 얻은 전극 분말을 황산에 침출시킨 니켈-카드뮴 용액에 황화나트륨을 첨가하여 CdS로 침전시켰다. 다양한 조건에서 이온치환실험을 실시하였으며, 최적조건으로는 상온에서 용액의 pH = -0.1, $Na_2S/Cd=2.3$일 때 용액 내 잔존하는 Cd은 약 100 ppm으로 대부분 CdS로 침전된 결과를 얻을 수 있었다.

  • Vacuum evaporated cadmium sulphide (CdS) thin films were implanted with $Ar^+$ and $N^+$ for different doses. The properties of the ion implanted CdS thin films have been analysed using XRD, optical transmittance spectra, and Raman scattering studies. Formation of Cd metallic clusters were observed in ion implanted films. The band gap of $Ar^+$ doped films decreased from 2.385 eV of the undoped film to 2.28 eV for the maximum doping. In the case of $N^+$ doped film the band gap decreased from 2.385 to 2.301 eV, whereas the absorption coefficient values increased with the increase of implantation dose. On implantation of both types of ions, the Raman peak position appeared at $299\textrm{cm}^{-1}$ and the FWHM changed with the ion dose.

Bioaccumulation Patterns and Ecophysiological Responses of Monochoria korsakowi Exposed to Cadmium

  • We have examined the bioaccumulation patterns and the ecophysiological responses (photosynthetic pigment and total antioxidative capacity) of Monochoria korsakowi exposed to various cadmium concentrations, one of major environmental pollutants. Cadmium ion contents in M. korsakowi increased significantly with higher cadmium concentration, and most of the accumulated cadmium was found in the root parts. Biomass of each part decreased with higher cadmium concentration. As cadmium treatment concentration was increased, chlorophyll a content was decreased, whereas chlorophyll b content was increased. However, the variations of total chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were not evident. Total antioxidative capacity in the leaves of cadmium treated M. korsakowi increased greatly with higher cadmium concentration. We considered these results as indicative of the ability of M. Korsakowi plants to take up cadmium from wetlands.

The Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide-Treated Metallothionein on the Hepatic Xanthine Oxidase Activity

  • We investigated the effect of hydrogen peroxide-treated metallothionein on the hepatic xanthine oxidase activity in vitro. When the metallothionein was preincubated with 1 mM of hydrogen peroxide, the activity of xanthine oxidase and type conversion were elevated dose-dependently by the addition of metallothionein into the reaction mixture. While increasing the treatment of hydrogen peroxide to the $50{\mu}g$of metallothionein, the xanthine oxidase activity and type conversion ratio were remarkably elevated dose dependently compared to the control. When cadmium ion was added to the reaction mixture, the increasing pattern of the enzyme activity was similar to the effect of hydrogen peroxide-treated metallothionein. DTT or penicillamine restored the increasing activity and type conversion of xanthine oxidase by the cadmium ion to the control level.

커피 찌꺼기를 흡착제로 한 니켈 폐수 처리 특성 (Treatment Features of Ni Wastewater by using Coffee Grounds as the Adsorbent)

  • A feasibility study has been conducted regarding the application of waste coffee grounds as an adsorbent for the treatment of nickel ion containing wastewater. The major variables which considered to influence the adsorbability of nickel ion were its initial concentration, reaction temperature, pH, and coexisting ion. The specific surface area of coffee grounds used in the experiment was found to be ca. $39.67m^2/g$, which suggesting its potential applicability as an adsorbent due to its relatively high surface area. In the experimental conditions, more than 90% of the initial amount of nickel ion was shown to adsorb within 15 minutes and equilibrium in adsorption was attained after 3 hours. The adsorption behavior of nickel ion was well explained by Freundlich model and kinetics study showed that the adsorption reaction was second-order. Adsorption was reduced with temperature and its change of enthalpy in standard state was estimated to be -807.05 kJ/mol. Arrhenius equation was employed for the calculation of the activation energy of adsorption and nickel ion was observed to adsorb on coffee grounds exoentropically based on thermodynamic estimations. As pH rose, the adsorption of nickel ion was diminished presumably due to the formation of cuboidal complex with hydroxide ion and the coexistence of cadmium ion was found to decrease the amount of nickel ion adsorption, which was proportional to the concentration of cadmium ion.

무우 유식물의 자엽과 뿌리에서 Cadmium 이온과 Polyamine 처리에 의한 아미노산 변화의 분석 (Analysis of the Change of Amino Acids by Cadmium and Polyamine-Treatment in Spring Radish Young Cotyledons and Roots)

  • 봄무우 유식물의 자엽과 뿌리에 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온을 처리하여 생체내에 아미노산의 변화를 조사하였다. 자엽에서는 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온의 처리로 Asp는 감소하나 Ala, Phe, Typ, Ilu, Val, Lys과 Arg의 농도가 더 증가되었다. 자엽에다 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온과 polyamine(PA)를 동시에 처리하면, Lys과 Arg의 농도가 급속히 감소하였으나, 다만 Pro의 농도는 증가되었다. 뿌리에다 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온을 처리하면 알카리성 아미노산인 His, Lys, Arg의 농도가 증가되었다. 그러나 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온과 PA를 동시에 처리하면, Lys과 Arg의 농도는 감소되었고, 다만 Pro의 농도는 증가되었다. 이 결과는 Pro는 PA에 의해 stress에 대항하여 유도되었고, 다른 아미노산 농도의 변화는 생체내에서 stress에 대항하는 대사와 관련이 있을 것으로 보여진다.

카드뮴 내성효모의 카드뮴축적에 미치는 계면활성제의 영향 (Increased Uptake of Cadmium by Surfactants in a Cadmium-Tolerant Yeast)

  • Cadmium uptake by growing and nongrowing (intact) cells of a chdmium-tolerant yeast Hansenula anomala B-7 in the presence of surfactants was studied. In growing cultures the addition of Triton X-100 or Tween 80 increased cadmium uptake by about 30% with no inhibition of cell growth, and in intact cells Triton X-100 increased cadmium accumulation by about 80% compared to surfactant-free controls. Considering balance between increased uptake and pollution, the addition of 0.1% Triton X-100 was preferable. By the mixed addition with defoamer silicone, during growth of cells Tween 80 or Triton X-100 enhanced uptake efficiency of cadmium compared to its single addition, whereas in intact biomass each of surfactants tested had no significant effect on cadmium uptake. The uptake of cadmium was observed to rise sharply to a maximum and then declined with increasing pH, and maximum accumulation of cadmium by growing and intact cells occurred at the pH of 6.0 and 7.0, respectively. A significant increase in cadmium uptake occurred with shaking culture. Cadmium uptake by growing and intact cells was almost completed during the culture time of 72 or 24 hrs, respectively. Scalded cells sorbed much more cadmium-ion than living cells.

  • When exposed to 1, 700 ml of 0.089, 0.445 or 0.890 mM/l cadmius solution, dock (rumex crispus L)plants from heavily polluted chungrangchon site absorbed 0.0404, 0.2244 or 0.4929 mM of cadmium per g dw during the first 4 hours, which were 5.0~30.8 times faster uptake rate than those of water hyacinth (eichhornia crassipes Solm. - laub). Zinc, with which cadmium generally occurs together, did not affect the uptake rate in the concentration range of 0.0306 ~0.0918 mM/l. rumex cripus from chungrangchon site and from less polluted shingalchon site, when exposed to 1, 700 ml of 0.089 mM/l solution for 3 days, removed 68.4% and 63.2%, repectively, of the cadmium initially present in the solution. And when exposed to cadmium solution of the same concentration for the second time after cadmium-free hydroponic culture for three days, these plants removed 76.1% and 66.8% of cadmium, respectively. These removal rates were not significantly different between collection sites or between exposures, but were about 2 times greater for the first exposure, and 2~5 times greater for the second exposure, than those of water hyacinth. these results incate that rumex cripus can absorb, and thus remove, large amount of cadmium ion in wastewater, and so can be used in wastewater treatment, e.g. soil trench method. since there was large difference among the plants in the ability to absorb cadmium, it should be possible to select for strain with greater ability.

Determination of Cadmium Ions by Designing an Optode Based on Immobilization of Dithizone on a Triacetylecelluose Membrane in Polluted Soil and Water Samples

  • 카드뮴이온 검출을 위한 optode를 triacetylecelluose 막에 있어 dithizone을 고정에 의하여 디자인 되었다. Optode 막이 카드뮴을 포함하는 611 nm 에서 흡수 변화가 가능한 실제시료에 도입 되었을 때 녹색에서 붉은 색으로 색 변화가 일어났다. $Cd^{2+}$ 이온 검출은 검출한계가 0.025 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ (25 ng $ml^{-1}$)이고 0.3-3 ${\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$ (2.67-26.67 ${\mu}M$)범위에서 가능하였다. Optode의 반응 시간은 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온에 의존하여 15분 안 에서 일어 났다. 다른 간섭종의 효과에 대해 시험되었고 좋은 선택성을 보였다. 제안된 optode를 사용하 여 오염된 토양과 물시료에서 $Cd^{2+}$ 이온의 검출 결과는 잘 확립된 원자흡수법과 동등하게 얻을 수 있었다.
