Analytical study of composite steel-concrete beams with external prestressing

  • Prestressed composite steel-concrete beams are still a technology restricted to repair sites of large-scale structures and spans. One of the reasons for that is the absence of standard frameworks and publications regarding their design and implementation. In addition, the primary normative codes do not address this subject directly, which might be related to a scarcity of papers indicating methods of design that would align the two technics, composite beams and external prestressing. In this context, this paper proposes methods to analyze the sizing of prestressed composite beams submitted to pre-tension and post-tension with a straight or polynomial layout cable. This inquiry inspected a hundred and twenty models of prestressed composite beams according to its prestressing technology and the eccentricity and value of the prestressing force. The evaluation also included the ratio between span and height of the steel profile, thickness and typology of the concrete slab, and layout of the prestressing cables. As for the results, it was observed that the eccentricity of the prestressing force doesn't significantly influence the bending resistance. In prestressed composite beams subjected to a sagging moment, the ratio L/d can reach 35 and 30 for steel-concrete composite slabs and solid concrete slabs, respectively. Considering the negative bending moment resistance, the value of the L/d ratio must be less than or equal to 25, regardless of the type of slab. When it comes to the value of the prestressing force, a variation greater than 10% causes a 2.6% increase in the positive bending moment resistance and a 4% decrease in the negative bending moment resistance. The pre-tensioned composite beams showed a superior response to flexural-compression and excessive compression limit states than the post-tensioned ones.

  • In this paper, a five degree-of-freedom haptic device is proposed. The proposed haptic device has a pen which is suspended by tensioned six strings. Human operator handles the pen. Six DC motors are used as actuators to generate tensions in six strings to make resultant force feedback at the pen to the human operator Six encoders are used for calculating the movement of the pen. A digital controller is used for generate control signals for the suitable tension in the six strings. A current amplifiers is used for amplifying the control signals. Cable-suspended system has advantages of structure simplicity (only with several strings driven by motors without using other tensioning mechanisms), low inertia, and high force-to-weight ratio.   • This study presents deflection analysis of long span structures for pedestrian bridge on crossroads. For long span structures, the size of structural members should be determined considering the esthetic view and vehicle below the structures. As a result, the slenderness ratio of members is increased and the structure may be suffered from significant deflection. The under-tensioned system on lower part of the structure, is applied in order to reduce the deflection and the size of members. In this regard, the under-tensioned system enables the load of upper parts to carη to the end of beam by means of tensional force in cable. In addition, effectiveness of under-tensioned system can be different depending on the size of cable, the number and spacing of posts. This study is performed with conforming the effect by analytical various parameters (size of cable, number and spacing of post). Dead and live loads is supposed to apply in the slab, and the analytical result by MIDAS program are presented addressing the effect of the under-tensioned system.

Permeability of Magnetic Flux of PS Steel for Variation of Stress and Temperature (긴장재의 응력 및 온도변화에 따른 자속투과율)

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of applied tensile force and temperature on the permeability of magnetic flux in prestressing steel. The permeability of magnetic flux is the ratio at which the magnetic flux between two points passes. The prestressing steel used in these experiments included a 7-mm PS wire mainly used for cable-stayed bridges and a 12.7-mm PS strand for prestressed concrete bridges. The experiments to extract the permeability of the magnetic flux of steel wire and strand were conducted under various tensile levels and temperature conditions. From the experimental results, it was observed that the permeability of magnetic flux of the PS tension material was linearly proportional to the applied tensile stress level, and inversely proportional to the temperature. If the experimental relationship among the magnetic permeability, temperature, and prestressing ratio of a PS tension material is known in advance, the current tension stress level on PS members can be evaluated by measuring solely the magnetic permeability and temperature.

Collision Analysis of Submerged Floating Tunnel by Underwater Navigating Vessel (수중운항체에 대한 해중터널의 충돌해석)

  • In this paper, to recognize the collision behavior between a submerged floating tunnel(SFT) and underwater navigation vessel(UNV), both structures are modeled and analyzed. The SFT of collision point is modeled tubular section using concrete with steel lining. The other part of SFT is modeled elastic beam elements. Mooring lines are modeled as cable elements with tension. The under water navigation vessel is assumed 1800DT submarine and its total mass at collision is obtained with hydrodynamic added mass. The buoyancy force on SFT is included in initial condition using dynamic relaxation method. The buoyancy ratio (B/W) and the collision speed are considered as the collision conditions. As results, energy dissipation is concentrated on the SFT and that of the UNV is minor. Additionally, the collision behaviors are greatly affected by B/W and the tension of mooring lines. Especially, the collision forces are shown different tendency compare to vessel collision force of current design code.

Dynamic response of post-tensioned rocking wall-moment frames under near-fault ground excitation

  • The dynamic responses of a rocking wall-moment frame (RWMF) with a post-tensioned cable are investigated. The nonlinear equations of motions are developed, which can be categorized as a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model. The model is validated through comparison of the rocking response of the rigid rocking wall (RRW) and displacement of the moment frame (MF) against that obtained from Finite Element analysis when subjected ground motion excitation. A comprehensive parametric analysis is carried out to determine the seismic performance factors of the RWMF systems under near-fault trigonometric pulse excitation. The horizontal displacement of the RWMF system is compared with that of MF structures without RRW, revealing the damping effect of the RRW. Frame displacement spectra excited by trigonometric pulses and recorded earthquake ground motions are constructed. The effects of pulse type, mass ratio, frame stiffness, and wall slenderness variations on the displacement spectra are presented. The paper shows that the coupling with a RRW has mixed results on suppressing the maximum displacement response of the frame.

Dynamic Behavior of Submerged Floating Tunnel by Underwater Explosion (수중폭발에 의한 해중터널의 동적거동)

  • In this paper, to estimate the dynamic behavior of a submerged floating tunnel(SFT) by underwater explosion(UE), the SFT is modeled and analyzed by the explicit structural analysis package LS-DYNA. The section of SFT near to explosion point is modeled to shell and solid elements using elasto-plasticity material model for concrete tubular section and steel lining. And the other parts of the SFT are modeled to elastic beam elements. Also, mooring lines are modeled as tension-only cable elements. Total mass of SFT is including an added mass by hydrodynamic effect. The buoyancy on the SFT is considered in its initial condition using a dynamic relaxation method. The accuracy and the feasibility of the analysis model aree verified by the results of series of free field analysis for UE. And buoyancy ratio(B/W) of SFT, the distance between SFT and an explosion point and the arrangement of mooring line aree considered as main parameters of the explosion analysis. As results of the explosion analysis, the dynamic responses such as the dent deformation by the shock pressure are responded less as more distance between SFT and an explosion point. However, the mooring angle of the diagonal mooring system can not affect the responses such as the horizontal displacement of SFT by the shock pressure.
