Nano-composite solders have been studied to improve the properties of Pb-free solder joints. The nanoparticles in the composite solders were carbon nanotubes(CNTs), metals (Ag, Ni, Cr, etc.), ceramics (SiC, $ZrO_2$, $TiB_2$, etc.). To fabricate the nano-composite solders, mechanical mixing methods and in-situ fabrication method has been used for well-dispersed nano phase. The characteristic properties of the nano-composite solders were high creep resistance, low undercooling, low IMC growth rate and fine microstructures. More researches on the nano-composite solders are required to improve the processibility and the reliability of the nano-composite solder joints.

The mechanical properties of composite materials may degrade severely in the presence of damage. Especially, the high-velocity impact such as bird strike, a hailstorm, and a small piece of tire or stone during high taxing, can cause sever damage to the structures and sub-system in spite of a very small mass. However, it is not easy to detect the damage in composite plates using a single technique or any conventional methods. In this paper, the PYDF(polyvinylidene fluoride) film sensors and strain gages were used for monitoring impact damage initiation and propagation in composite laminates. The WT(wavelet transform) and STFT(short time Fourier transform) are used to decompose the sensor signals. A ultrasonic C-scan and a digital microscope are also used to examine the extent of the damage in each case. This research demonstrate how various sensing techniques, PVDF sensor in particular, can be used to characterize high-velocity impact damage in advanced composites.

The main aim of the present paper is to present the results of a full-scale experimental investigation to study the structural behaviour of composite steel beams. The composite beam was made of cold-formed steel section shapes filled with reinforced concrete. First a comprehensive description of the experimental results in terms of: deflections, deformations, slippage and stress levels on critical steps of the load path is presented. The experimental results were then compared to theoretical values obtained by the use of an analytical model based on ultimate limit state stress blocks. Finally, a practical application of the use of this structural solution is depicted.

Carbon nanofiber/Cu composite powder has been fabricated by electroless plating process. Microstructural evolution of the composite powder after heat treatment under vacuum, hydrogen and air environment was investigated. A dispersed carbon nanofiber coated by copper was produced at the as-plated condition. Carbon nanofiber is coated uniformly and densely with the plate shaped copper particles. The copper plates on the carbon nanofiber aggregate during the thermal exposure at elevated temperature in vacuum and hydrogen in order to reduce surface energy. The thermal exposure of the composite powder in air at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours leads to the spherodization of the composite powder owing to oxidation of copper.

This paper deals with the electric and thermal characteristics of the composite busbar composed of aluminum and copper. When AC current is flowing in Cu busbar used widely in conservative equipments like power cable, transformer, and switchgear & controlgear most current is concentrated on the surface of the busbar by the skin effect. Therefore, if the Cu region in the busbar having low current density is replaced with aluminum, we can largely reduce the product cost and weight of the busbar. To conform the performance of the composite busbar, we designed and fabricated a test Al/Cu composite busbar. Maximun temperature rise of the busbar was $35^{\circ}C$ when 1600 Arms of AC current was applied to the test composite busbar($120mm{\times}10mm$). Based on test results, we can expect to make the low-priced and light power equipments using the Al/Cu composite busbar.
Ni-C composite films were prepared using a combination of microwave plasma CVD and ion beam sputtering deposition working in a codeposition way. The structure of these films was characterized by energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. It was found that a nickel carbide phase, $Ni_3C$ (hcp), formed as very fine crystallites over a wide temperature range when Ni-C films were deposited at low $CH_4$ flow rates. The thermal stability of this nonequilibrium carbide $Ni_3C$ was also studied. As a result, the $Ni_3C$ carbide was found to decompose into nickel and graphite at around $400^{\circ}C$. With high $CH_4$ flow rates (> 0.2 sccm), the structure of the Ni-C films became amorphous. The formation behavior of the carbide and amorphous Ni-C phases are discussed in relation to the electrical resistivity of the films.

Quinary Ti-Al-Si-C-N films were successfully synthesized on SUS 304 substrates and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system combining an arc ion plating technique and a DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique. In this work, the effect of Si content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-Al-C-N films were systematically investigated. It was revealed that the microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings changed from a columnar to a nano-composite by the Si addition. Due to the nanocomposite microstructure of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings, the microhardness of The Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings significantly increased up to 56 GPa. In addition the average friction coefficients of Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings were remarkably decreased with Si addition. Therefore, Ti-Al-Si-C-N coatings can be applicable as next-generation hard-coating materials due to their improved hybrid mechanical properties.
Formation of Solid Solution and Microstructure in Processureless sintered SiC-AlN compo-site using oxides as a sintering aid at 185$0^{\circ}C$ and 195$0^{\circ}C$ Regardless of SiC/AlN ratio in composition most of sintered specimens showed he complex structure mixed with 2H solid solution and SiC particles. High sintering temperature and large AlN content in starting composition enhanced the formation of 2H solid solution in sintered specimen 2H solid solution showed the spherical shape and core-rim structure. AlN content in the core is higher than that in the rim but SiC content . The size of 2H solid solution on fracture showed the transgranular fracture mode compared with the dispersed SiC particles which showed the intergranular fracture mode.

Cu-30 vol% SiC composites with relatively densified microstructure and a sound interface between the Cu and SiC phases were obtained by pressureless sintering of PCS-coated SiC and Cu powders. The coated SiC powders were prepared by thermal curing and pyrolysis of PCS. Thermal curing at $200^{\circ}C$ was performed to fabricate infusible materials prior to pyrolysis. The cured powders were heated treated up to $1600^{\circ}C$ for the pyrolysis process and for the formation of SiC crystals on the surface of the SiC powders. XRD analysis revealed that the main peaks corresponded to the ${\alpha}$-SiC phase; peaks for ${\beta}$-SiC were newly appeared. The formation of ${\beta}$-SiC is explained by the transformation of thermally-cured PCS on the surface of the initial ${\alpha}$-SiC powders. Using powder mixtures of coated SiC powder, hydrogen-reduced Cu-nitrate, and elemental Cu powders, Cu-SiC composites were fabricated by pressureless sintering at $1000^{\circ}C$. Microstructural observation for the sintered composites showed that the powder mixture of PCS-coated SiC and Cu exhibited a relatively dense and homogeneous microstructure. Conversely, large pores and separated interfaces between Cu and SiC were observed in the sintered composite using uncoated SiC powders. These results suggest that Cu-SiC composites with sound microstructure can be prepared using a PCS coated SiC powder mixture.
The effect of pressure on the thermal conductivity in two-phase composite system was studied. Thermally conductive polypropylene (PP)/silicon carbide (SiC) composites were prepared by applying various pressures from 0 to 20 MPa. The thermal conductivity of the composite was 1.86 W/mK at 20 MPa, increased by 40% compared to the value of at 0 MPa. It was 9 times higher than that of unfilled polypropylene. It implies the pressure induces the easy path for phonon transport. Also, the experimental values were compared with Maxwell's prediction and Agari's prediction. Agari's prediction gave a better agreement compared to that of Maxwell's prediction due to the consideration of interactions between filler-filler and filler-polymer.
