We investigated the viscosity behavior and the carbon yield of coal tar pitch (CTP) treated with iodine. The viscosity of iodine treated pitch showed that the fluidity of iodine treated CTP did not increase within the iodine addition of 1.4%. DTG analysis showed that cross linking was accelerated at the temperature range from $400\;to\;500{^{\circ}C}$ with iodine treatment, which is due to the accelerated dehydrogenative reaction by iodine. The iodine treatment was mainly effective for β-resin content increase of CTP. The carbon yield of CTP increased from 40 to 60% by the iodine non-treated CTP.
Dense $WSi_2$-20vol.%SiC composite was synthesized by high-frequency induction-heated combustion synthesis(HFIHCS) method within 2 minutes in one step from elemental powder mixture of W, Si and C. Simultaneous combustion synthesis and densification were accomplished under the combined effects of an induced current and mechanical pressure. Highly dense $WSi_2$-20vol.%SiC with relative density of up to 97% was produced under simultaneous application of 60MPa pressure and the induced current. The average grain size of $WSi_2$ was about $5.2{\mu}m$. The hardness and fracture toughness values obtained were 1700kg/$mm^2$ and $4.4MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.
A SiC-$CeO_2$ composite membrane was successfully fabricated using an ally-hydridopolycarbosilane (AHPCS) binder and treated by dip-coating at 60 times with a $CeO_2$ sol solution. The dip-coated SiC membrane was calcined at 773 K and then sintered at 1173 K under an air atmosphere. The coated membrane was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and a BET surface analysis. The difference in permeation performance between $H_2$ and CO gases was measured by varying the temperature. The permeation flux of $H_2$ on the SiC membrane with layered $CeO_2$ was obtained as $8.45{\times}10^{-6}\;mol/m^2sPa$ at room temperature. The CO permeation flux was $2.64{\times}10^{-6}\;mol/m^2sPa$ at room temperature. The reaction enthalpy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$) for the hydrogen permeation process was calculated as -7.82 J/mol by Arrhenius plots.

In this paper, we fabricated $SnO_2$ composite ceramics doped with 0~20mol% $SnO_2$ of bulk type to investigate the CO and $H_2$ gas sensitivity in various composition, temperature, and concentration of CO and $H_2$ gas. At the temperature range from $100^{\circ}C\sim425^{\circ}C$, the measured 1000ppm and 250ppm CO gas sensitivities of $SiO_2-SnO_2$composite ceramics were about 1.0~7.6 and 1.0~5.6, respectively. These values were about 1.0~1.5 times larger than pure $SnO_2$. The maximum 1000ppm CO gas sensitivity of $SiO_2-SnO_2$composites were measured around $325^{\circ}C$. At the temperature range from $270^{\circ}C\sim380^{\circ}C$, the 1000ppm and 500ppm $H_2$gas sensitivities of $SiO_2-SnO_2$ composites were about 2.9~21.2 and 2.1~11.3, respectively. Also the maximum 1000, 500 ppm $H_2$ gas sensitivities of samples were measured around.

A wear behavior of electroless (Ni-P-X, X: SiC, $Al_2O_3$, Diamond) composite coating layers, formed under various conditions on commerical grade low carbon steel, has been investigated using Taber abrasion tester and scanning electron microscope. Several factors, which are type of particles, co-deposited content, particle size, distribution of particles and heat-treatment, influenced the wear resistance. The wear resistance of the composited coating layers after heat-treatment at $400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr was increased 70 times with diamond, 15 times with SiC and 8 times with $Al_2O_3$, compared with the electroless nickel plating layer without heat-treatment.
Fracture toughness of SiC on Si thin films of thicknesses of 150, 750, and 1500 nm were measured using Agilent XP nanoindenter equipped with a Dynamic Control Module (DCM) in Load Control (LC) and Continuous Stiffness Method (CSM) protocols. The fracture toughness of the Si substrate is also measured. Nanovision images implied that indentations into the films and well deep into the Si caused cracks to initiate at the Si substrate and propagate upward to the films. The composite fracture toughness of the SiC/Si was measured and the fracture toughness of the SiC films was determined based on models that estimate film properties from substrate properties. The composite hardness and modulus of the SiC films were measured as well. For the DCM, the hardness decreases from an average of 35 GPa to an average of 13 GPa as the film thick increases from 150 nm to 1500 nm. The hardness and moduli of the films depict the hardness and modulus of Si at deep indents of 12 and 200 GPa respectively, which correlate well with literature hardness and modulus values of Si. The fracture toughness values of the films were reported as 3.2 MPa√m.

The sheet molding compound composite has been applied divers section. This paper reports processing of carbon fiber reinforced thermosetting composite with diverse resins and which was composed of chopped carbon fiber (30 ~ 60 wt%). Normally the paste that the viscosity is over 15,000 cps has been used in traditional Sheet molding compound (SMC) machine. In this research, SMC machine was designed to make Carbon-sheet molding compound (C-SMC) prepreg which was composed with low viscosity resin (1,800 ~ 2,500 cps increase up to 10,000 cps after aging). In order to confirm the optimal processing condition. Mechanical strength tests including tensile test, shear test, impact test, flexural strength test were conducted on C-SMC composites. Plus we identified the correlation between the mechanical properties and prepreg processing condition (carbon ratio and applied resin).
Si-SiC-graphite composites were developed by incorporating solid lubricant graphite into Si-SiC, in the light of improving tribological properties of Si-SiC ceramics. Si-SiC-graphite composites were fabricated by infilterating silicon melt into the mixture of α-SiC, carbon black and graphite powder at 1750℃ under 3 Torr. The particle size of graphite was in the range of 150 to 500㎛, and the loading content of graphite was 0, 20, 25, 30, 35 vol% in the mixture of α-SiC and carbon black. The mechanical and tribological properties of this composites were studied. The density, hardness, flexural strength, compressive strength and Young's modulus were decreased with increasing of graphite content. An additiion of solid-lubricant graphite up to 30 vol% has improved tribological properties of Si-SiC ceramics without considerable degradation of mechanical properties.
The effect of SiC addition on sintering behaviors and microstructures of TiB2 ceramics were studied. The sintering of TiB2 was limited due to the surface diffusion and rapid grain growth at high temperature. However the addition of SiC to TiB2 ceramics improved the densification to above 99% of the theoretical density. The sintering of TiB2-SiC composite starts at 120$0^{\circ}C$ with the melting of the oxides in particle surface as impurities. After the reduction of the oxide by additional cabon at above 140$0^{\circ}C$, the grain boundary diffusion through the interface of TiB2-SiC play an important role. TEM observation showed neither chemical reactions nor other phases formed at the TiB2-SiC interfaces but the microcracks were observed due to the mismatch of thermal expansion between TiB2-SiC.

In this paper, mechanical property of biomorphic C/SiC composite was calculated by unit cell analysis. The microstructural arrangements of carbonized pine and radiata pine which were impregnated with silicon, were idealized as square and hexagonal arrays. Unit cell was then defined and equivalent elastic constants were calculated. A single and double unit cell structures were considered. The effect of void distribution was also studied by monte carlo simulation.
