  • In this letter, we demonstrate a technique for suppression of transients in output bursts of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) in an optical burst network. To suppress the transients, the EDFA is forward-fed by non-fluctuating input utilizing a power-modulated burst control packet channel. Using the technique, we obtained a maximum 1.7 dB reduction in gain transient in the EDFA output, and we transmitted 9.953 Gbps data bursts and 2.488 Gbps burst control packets stably.

  • Presently, optical burst switching (OBS) technology is under study as a promising solution for the backbone of the optical Internet in the near future because OBS eliminates the optical buffer problem at the switching node with the help of no optical/electro/optical conversion and guarantees class of service without any buffering. To implement the OBS network, there are a lot of challenging issues to be solved. The edge router, burst offset time management, and burst assembly mechanism are critical issues. In addition, the core router needs data burst and control header packet scheduling, a protection and restoration mechanism, and a contention resolution scheme. In this paper, we focus on the burst assembly mechanism. We present a novel data burst generation algorithm that uses hysteresis characteristics in the queueing model for the ingress edge node in optical burst switching networks. Simulation with Poisson and self-similar traffic models shows that this algorithm adaptively changes the data burst size according to the offered load and offers high average data burst utilization with a lower timer operation. It also reduces the possibility of a continuous blocking problem in the bandwidth reservation request, limits the maximum queueing delay, and minimizes the required burst size by lifting up data burst utilization for bursty input IP traffic.

  • This paper analyzes the throughput performance of a selective repeat (SR)/automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme to transmit packet data in burst home network channel. To combat the high degree of error caused by transmission of home network data a robust error control scheme is a necessity. Basically, error control schemes can be divided in two categories: ARQ schemes and forward error correction (FEC) schemes. ARQ schemes are often used for reliable data transmission. The performance of packet transmission using SR-ARQ schemes for bursty channels is analyzed and simple analytical expressions of its throughput are presented. Theoretic analysis and numerical results indicate that a small number of packet sizes can get good performance in bursty home network channel.

  • In this letter, we design a collision resolution protocol for optical burst switching ring networks to avoid burst collision. We define the offset time condition for no burst transmission collision and manage the free time list of nodes for no burst reception collision. In order to improve the throughput, we use a fiber delay line, void-filling, and void-compression. This protocol does not require any additional procedures for bandwidth reservation such as centralized assignment of bandwidth, lightpath setup of WDM ring networks, or token capturing for the burst transmission. The simulation results show that the proposed protocol can achieve high throughput while saving 70% of wavelengths when compared to round robin with random selection, round robin with persistent, and round robin with non-persistent with only destination delay.

  • Operation and maintenance (OAM) in optical burst switching (OBS) networks has not yet been addressed even though OBS has been gaining research interest in recent years. In this paper, we defined five OBS functions such as Burst Termination (BT), Burst Transmission (BTX), Burst Switching (BSW), Routing and Switching Control (RSC), and Protection and Restoration (PAR). A functional model for OBS networks and an OAM architecture are designed to meet the operational requirements. We present the first framework to realize OAM in OBS networks, including OAM activities, OAM-capable OBS nodes such as ingress edge, core, and egress edge nodes, OAM information and communication models and protocols. A number of examples of possible network failures are pointed out and the corresponding reactions to these using the proposed OAM architecture are presented.

  • Because a packet loss brings about degradation of speech quality, VoIP speech coders have PLC (Packet Loss Concealment) mechanism. G.711, which is a mandatory VoIP speech coder, also has the PLC algorithm based on pitch period replication. However, it is not robust to burst losses. Thus, we propose two methods to improve the performance of the original PLC algorithm in G.711. One adaptively utilizes voiced/unvoiced information of adjacent good frames regarding to the current lost frame. The other is based on adaptive gain control according to energy variation across the frames. We evaluate the performance of the proposed PLC algorithm by measuring a PESQ value under different random and burst packet loss simulating conditions. It is shown from the experiments that the performance of the proposed PLC algorithm outperforms that of PLC employed in ITU-T Recommendation G.711.

  • The optical Internet is considered as a feasible solution for transporting huge amount of traffic volume in the future Internet. Among optical switching technology for the optical Internet, OBS becomes one of the most promoting solution. Recently, a lebeled OBS(LOBS) architecture is considered for an efficient control on OBS network. Given that a data burst may contain few thousands of IP packets, a single loss of data burst results in a serious throughput degradation in LOBS network. In this paper, we improve the performance of LOBS network by introducing the burst congestion control mechanism. More specifically, the OBS router at the network core detects the network congestion by measuring the loss probability of burst control packet. The OBS router at the network edge reduces the burst generation according to the network condition repored by the OBS router at the network core. Through the simulations, it is shown that the proposed congestion control mechanism can reduce the burst loss probability and improve the LOBS network throughput.

  • Multihop is the main communication style for wireless sensor networks composed of tiny sensor nodes. Until now, most applications have treated the periodic small sized sensing data. Recently, the burst traffic with the transient and continuous nature is increasingly introduced due to the advent of wireless multimedia sensor networks. Therefore, the efficient communication protocol to support this trend is required. In this paper, we propose a novel PIGAB(Packet Interval Gap based on Adaptive Backoff) protocol to efficiently transmit the burst data in multihop wireless sensor networks. The contention-based PIGAB protocol consists of the PIG(Packet Interval Gap) control algorithm in the source node and the MF(MAC-level Forwarding) algorithm in the relay node. The PIGAB is on basis of the newly proposed AB(Adaptive Backoff), CAB(Collision Avoidance Backoff), and UB(Uniform Backoff). These innovative algorithms and schemes can achieve the performance of network by adjusting the gap of every packet interval, recognizing the packet transmission of the hidden node. Through the simulations and experiments, we identify that the proposed PIGAB protocol considerably has the stable throughput and low latency in transmitting the burst data in multihop wireless sensor networks.

  • Optical Burst Switched (OBS) networks usually employ one-way reservation by sending a burst control packet (BCP) with a specific offset time, before transmitting each data burst frame (BDF). Therefore, The quality of service may be degraded because contentions may lead to loss of BDFs. Especially, this phenomenon becomes more serious when burst size is longer. This necessitates an effective method of prevention to avoid burst collision in nodes. OBS networks can employ several methods to avoid such burst losses. One is that burst size is cut short to reduce burst loss probability during scheduling time. In this paper, we evaluate the burst generation and transmission using Sub-Carrier Multiplexting (SCM) in OBS networks. We propose an appropriate burst assembly architecture and transmission scheme based on SCM in OBS networks. The performance of SCM in OBS networks is examined in terms of number of Sub-Carriers per wavelength, burst loss probability, throughput, and total bandwidth of an optical fiber.

  • In recent years, the needs for WLANs(Wireless Local Area Networks) technology which can access to Internet anywhere have been dramatically increased particularly in SOHO(Small Office Home Office) and Hot Spot. However, unlike wired networks, there are some unique characteristics of wireless networks. These characteristics include the burst packet losses due to unreliable wireless channel. Note that burst packet losses, which occur when the distance between the wireless station and the AP(Access Point) increase or when obstacles move temporarily between the station and AP, are very frequent in 802.11 networks. Conversely, due to burst packet losses, the performance of 802.11 networks are not always as sufficient as the current application require, particularly when they use TCP at the transport layer. The high packet loss rate over wireless links can trigger unnecessary execution of TCP congestion control algorithm, resulting in performance degradation. In order to overcome the limitations of WLANs environment, MAC-layer LDA(Loss Differentiation Algorithm)has been proposed. MAC-layer LDA prevents TCP's timeout by increasing CRD(Consecutive Retry Duration) higher than burst packet loss duration. However, in the wireless channel with high packet loss rate, MAC-layer LDA does not work well because of two reason: (a) If the CRD is lower than burst packet loss duration due to the limited increase of retry limit, end-to-end performance is degraded. (b) energy of mobile device and bandwidth utilization in the wireless link are wasted unnecessarily by Reducing the drainage speed of the network buffer due to the increase of CRD. In this paper, we propose a new retransmission module based on Cross-layer approach, called BLD(Burst Loss Detection) module, to solve the limitation of previous link layer retransmission schemes. BLD module's algorithm is retransmission mechanism at IEEE 802.11 networks and performs retransmission based on the interaction between retransmission mechanisms of the MAC layer and TCP. From the simulation by using ns-2(Network Simulator), we could see more improved TCP throughput and energy efficiency with the proposed scheme than previous mechanisms.
