  • The subjects of this study were 4th to 6th grade children and instruments were the Teenage Inventory of Social Skills, the Internal-External Control Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale, and the Peer Relations Questionnaire. In the concurrent study, children lower in social skills and in self-esteem and external in locus of control reported more bullying and victimization. Children higher in social skills and in self-esteem and internal in locus of control reported more prosocial behavior. In the prospective study, children lower in social skills were more involved in bullying and victimization. Children higher in social skills reported more prosocial behavior. The effects of locus of control and self-esteem on peer relations diminished over time. However, social skills had a significant influence on bullying, victimization and prosocial behavior up to two years later. Children lower in psychosocial development were more vulnerable to peer victimization.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of self-esteem and self-resilience while identifying the relationship between bullying victimization (being bullied) and depression based on a longitudinal study design. Methods: Participants were adolescent cohort of 1,971 middle school students participating in 2013 and 2014 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey conducted by National Youth Policy Institute. Data were analyzed by Pearson's Correlation and regression. Results: The major findings are as follows. First, self-esteem and self-resilience were positively related to each other and negatively related to depression and bullying victimization. Second, bullying victimization effected the level of depression of adolescents and self-esteem played a mediating role between bullying victimization and depression while self-resilience did not. Conclusion: The results suggest that emotional factors continue to play an important role in promoting psychological adjustment of victims of bullying. Therefore, interventions are more likely to be successful if they focus on emotional skills development of adolescents.

  • This study examined the relations of maternal parenting and children's self-esteem to peer victimization as well as the gender differences in peer victimization. A sample of 494 5th- and 6th-grade children in Pusan answered three kinds of questionnaires regarding maternal parenting, children's self-esteem, and peer victimization. Peer victimization consisted of two constructs, bullying and victimization by pun. Data were analyzed by independent samples t-test and correlations. Boys showed more overt bullying and victimization by peers than girls, but relational peer victimization didn't vary as a function of the gender. Overall, the more boys and girls perceived their mothers as rejective/restricted, protective, and physically abusive, the more they were bullied and victimized. Both boys and girls were bullied and victimized by their peers when they showed lower self-esteem. Especially self-esteem was more highly correlated with victimization by peers than bullying.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the factors associated with the experience of bullying victimization in school among elementary school students in the Jeju area. Methods : A total of 662 students were recruited from elementary schools for a school-based cross-sectional survey (age range : 11-12 years) in the Jeju area. This study used a self-reported questionnaire concerning the experience of being victimized by bullying, the Korean form of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) to assess depressive symptoms, and questions on sociodemographic characteristics, including school- and family-related factors. Results : The prevalence of bullying victimization in school among elementary school students was 10.0% (n=66). The factors associated with bullying victimization were lower socioeconomic status, lower than average academic achievement, more depressive symptoms, and family problems. Conclusion : This study not only indicates that bullying at school is a significant public health issue among elementary school students, but also confirms that children with family problems commonly exhibit bullying behaviors, which highlights the importance of considering family-related environmental factors when managing bullying victimization.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of bullying victimization on depressive symptoms in adolescents, and to determine how depression depends on resilience. Methods : A total of 4,160 students were recruited, from middle and high schools in Goheung, Yeosu, and the Jangheung area of Jeollanam-do Province. All participants completed self-report questionnaires, that included demographic variables, the Beck Depression inventory (BDI) the School Bullying Self-Rating Questionnaire (SBSRQ), and the Resilience Test (RT). Results : Prevalence of depression was 30.3%. A total of 220 (5.3%) students were evaluated likely to be bullied and 45 (1.1%) students were evaluated very likely to be bullied. Depressive symptoms positively correlated with bullying victimization. Depressive symptoms and resilience, bullying victimization and resilience negatively correlated. Results from regression analyses indicated that, while controlling for a range of demographic variables, resilience moderated the association between bullying victimization and depressive symptoms. Conclusion : Based on the results, professionals must consider resilience for treatment to reduce depression in adolescents of bullying victimization.

  • Bullying at school results in a variety of psychological and social issues. Even after victims reach adulthood, these issues do not resolve and can have detrimental effects. The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of school bullying victimization on body appreciation in adulthood. Considerations include multi-mediating effects of physical attractiveness comparison and ambivalent emotions toward beauty. A research model comprised of six hypotheses was derived applying the A (adversity)-B (belief)-C (consequence) theory. A survey with 583 South Korean women in their twenties to forties was conducted to collect data. Confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, and multi-mediation analysis were applied, and all hypotheses were accepted. School bullying victimization had a negative influence on body appreciation in adulthood. Additionally, physical attractiveness comparison and ambivalent emotions toward beauty mediated this causal relationship. Also, the mediating effect of physical attractiveness comparison on the relationship between school bullying victimization and body appreciation was the greatest among the three mediating effects. This study demonstrated that bullying victimization at school continues into adulthood, which hurts body appreciation of adulthood. The findings would contribute to the development of therapy programs for school bullying victims.

  • Objective: The present study examined the effects of school violence victimization and self-control on cyberbullying perpetration in middle school students and investigated whether self-control moderated the relationship between school violence victimization and cyberbullying perpetration. Methods: The participants of this study were 315 middle school students (172 boys; 143 girls) from three middle schools in Seoul and Incheon. To measure the level of cyberbullying perpetration, the Bullying/Victimization Questionnaire was used. School violence victimization and self-control were measured via the School Violence Victimization Scale and the Self-Control Scale, respectively. The data were analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and hierarchical regressions. Results and Conclusion: The results indicated that school bullying victimization level increased cyberbullying perpetration level whereas self-control level decreased cyberbullying perpetration. In addition, self-control moderated the effect of school violence victimization on cyberbullying perpetration. That is, the influence of school bullying victimization on cyberbullying perpetration was greater when self-control was low, compared to when it was high.
