A Study on the Analysis of Operation Reliability of Fire Doors and Fire Shutters Using Fire Statistical Data (화재통계자료를 활용한 방화문, 방화셔터 작동신뢰성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • In order to establish an evaluation method that can quantitatively evaluate the fire safety of existing buildings in Korea, a stochastic approach is needed to consider the extent of damage in the event of actual fire, along with the operation and installation of facilities. Accordingly, as a basic study for the establishment of fire safety assessment methods for buildings, this study aims to analyze the results of safety inspection and the degree of damage caused by the operation of fire doors and fire shutters in order to derive the reliability of fire doors and fire shutters. As a result, the results of inspection of fire shutters and fire doors and the results of operation using fire statisticians are as follows. As a result of the inspection, the positive rate of fire doors was about 82% and 98% of normal operation was derived from the fire investigation.

Safety Assessment of the Evacuation at School Building by Escape Training and Simulation (학교건물에서 피난훈련과 시뮬레이션을 통한 피난안전성 평가)

  • In this study, the evacuation training were performed in a high school building in Cheong-Ju and compared with the simulation program (Simulex). Also numerical analysis of room fire in school building was conducted by fire model (FDS, CFAST) and evaluated the available safe egress time for the safety assessment. As a result, the 8% of total egress persons were failed to escape at evacuation training and 40% of total egress persons were failed to escape at Simutex simulation. Simutex program was not reflected the real escape conditions, such as evacuation route, refuge place, etc.

A Study on the Effectiveness to the Life Safety by Enlarging Smoke Vent Size and/or Sprinklered System (배연창 크기와 스프링클러 작동이 인명안전에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • Recently, evacuation safety of a resident of building become the major concern, because building has been higher and more complicated. Buildings in Korea should install the natural smoke venting or mechanical smoke exhaust equipment according to the building law. The smoke control is the most important to guarantee the evacuation safety. This study evaluate the influence to the height and temperature of smoke layer by enlarging smoke vent size and operating sprinkler system using CFAST (Version 6). Smoke venting size is larger, the effect to height and temperature of smoke layer is increased in below 5 MW fire. But, the correlation of these is decreased in above 10 MW fire. The case that opened smoke vent and sprinklered are applied, life safety criteria are satisfied regardless of fire size. After design the fire scenario according to the service and size of building. Install the smoke vent suitable for the fire size and verify that by experiment or simulation.

  • While damage caused by fire increases, awareness of fire is still low. Morever, Small fires often spread into big fires as they fail to keep the golden time due to the delay in initial response. In particular, the initial response is more important in areas where many unauthorized buildings are called " Panjachon " as firefighting facilities are insufficient compared to other residential facilities. Therefore, we will combine BIM technology, drones and IT convergence technologies to develop a firefighting safety information system that can speed up initial response and help combat fires.

The Impact of Building Types on Fire Damage by Month

  • Statistics show that while the number of fires has decreased over the last decade, losses of human life and economic property due to fire have increased. Moreover, the number of large-scale fires that have occurred in recent years has resulted in heightened public anxiety. This study aims to identify a specific period of the year most vulnerable to fire, and fire trends, such as damage of fire to humans, to the economy, and different building types. For this purpose, we analyzed human and economic damages using statistics related to fire from 2007 to 2017 and provided a monthly distribution of fire damages both to humans and to the economy by building type. We also identified the relationship between the human damage and the economy damage, and compared the economic losses per casualty by building type. The human damage in residential buildings occupied the highest portion, whereas the economic damage of industrial buildings represented more than a half of all economic damage due to fire. The economic damage per casualty was shown highest for industrial buildings and has also increased rapidly in recent years.

  • As a building energy saving standard strengthened, The number of building installed external thermal insulation composite system(ETICS) using EPS insulation increased. But frequent fire accident in the buildings installed EIFS using EPS led to strengthening of building fire safety regulation. This study is for fire property of EPS ETICS reinforced with noncombustible calcium silicate-based mineral insulation as a fire spread prevention structure(FSPS). Fire test for large scale wall by ISO 13785-2 was applied and results showed EPS EIFS with FSPS got 3~8 times superior fire safety than normal EIFS by visual investigation. Temperature and heat flux measurement results, which data of upside of specimen were lower than downside, also supported fire safety of EIFS with FSPS.

  • In this study, the independent variables are the floor plan configulation. The dependent variables are the occupant's egress behavior, especially spatial movement pattern, and life - safety performance of building. Fire events were simulated on single story of office building. Simulation run for allowable secaping thime(180 seconds) arbitrarily selected, and involved 48 occupants. The major findings Pre as follows. 1) Computer simulation model suggested in this study can be used as the Preoccupancy evaluation method of the life-safety performance for architectural design based on prediction of occupants' egress behavior in the levels of validity and sensitivity, 2) Sucess or failure in occupants' escape is determined by decreasing walking speed caused by jamming at exits or over crowded corridor, and increasing route length caused by running about in confusion at each subdivision and corridor. 3) In floor plan configuration which safe areas located at the extreme ends of the corridor, cellular floor planning have to be avoided preventing jamming and running about in confusion at overcrowded corridor.

  • In this study, combustibles investigation and fire growth rate experiment were performed for predicting initial fire behavior in buildings. Combustibles investigation was performed for residential buildings, which is most frequently affected by fire in Korea. Spatial characteristics and combustibles properties were separately investigated, and occupied area and layout characteristics of combustibles were identified to produce general layout models. Of the layout models, room was selected for fire test of a single compartment. From this test, fire propagation for each combustible was identified, which was delayed compared to the summed heat release rate of a single combustible.

Analysis on Field Professionals' Assessment of Alternative Fire Escape Methods in Apartment Building (공동주택 대안적 화재 피난방식에 대한 건설전문가 평가조사)

  • In apartment buildings, casualties, especially fatalities have occurred in balcony areas in fires if residents fail to escape to the main entrance. Potential consequences of a particular infrequent event should be considered. In attempting to design apartment buildings for fire safety, alternative escape methods such as vertical penetration could be considered. The purpose of this study is to investigate present building regulations regarding apartment buildings and examine pros and cons of the current escape method and alternative escape methods. Focus group interview was conducted to discuss problems of fire escape methods. In addition, questionnaires were distributed to field professionals working in architecture, construction and related industries. Among 500 questionnaires distributed, 192 questionnaires were collected. Usable 162 questionnaires were analyzed using SPSS 15. Regarding alternative fire escape methods, several concerns were mentioned. Safety, privacy, security, effectiveness of escape, water proof problems were raised. Based on the opinions, vertical penetration between apartment unit appeared more safe, secure, effective than horizontal penetration. However, both methods have its own pros and cons under specific contexts. Alternative escape methods need be considered for a selective options for residents in case of fire.

An Experimental Study on the Fire Safety Design of Windows in Building (건축물 창호의 화재안전설계를 위한 실험적 연구)

  • In the building, the opening penetrates the wall and serves as a spreading channel for smoke and flame in case of fire. In Korea, more than 1,500 fire plume are generated annually, and the number has increased by about 30% over the past five years. Therefore, in the case of windows protecting the opening, fire protection performance is important to prevent the spread of fire. However, in Korea, the standard for window is not clear. In this study, fire tests (EN 13823) for windows were conducted in Korea, and then fire protection performance of windows was compared. As a result of the experiment, PVC windows showed a phenomenon that they could not withstand the temperature during the fire experiment, and AL windows showed a difference in the degree of cracking of the glass.
