Architectural Plan And layout of Buddhist Temples(Wangsil-Wonchal) on through the Study of Records about Temple's Foundation during King Sejo(世祖) Period (기문(記文)으로 본 세조(世祖)연간 왕실원찰(王室願刹)의 전각평면과 가람배치)

  • The study on Buddhism architecture in early Joseon dynasty was inactive. The period of King Sejo is important for studying the trend of Buddhism architecture in early Joseon, that was transmitted from the end of Goryeo dynasty, but it was difficult to know its exact situation due to lack of related records. The records were all written by Kim Su-ohn, which are Wongaksabi' 'Sangwonsajungchanggi' 'Bongseonsagi 'Geonginsajungchanggi'. The main hall was mainly second floor and there were necessarily annexed buildings at the right and left of the main hall. So the plane figure of $\Box\Box\Box$ was shown. It was a main stream for main hall. This layout may be referred to search for the origin of the layout in courtyard based structure(中庭形) in the late Joseon dynasty. Most of temples had 3 gates. Some part of horizontal corridor was used as 2 gates and the outer gate, far from main hall, was without corridor. The gate leading to front yard of main hall was called front gate, the next middle gate and the outer gate was Oisamun(外沙門) or Samun(沙門). Im most of the temples, people could enter into the front yard through pavilion which had the function of bell tower. The pavilions were located between front gate and first corridor. It is thought that this layout of the place for making bean curd outside the temple area will contribute to different studies on temples making bean cure in the future. The records about temples's foundation studied above are a little different between temples, but have more similarities. There common denominators represent the architecture tendency of Buddhist temples in the related period. It is thought that such a tendency was also shown on architecture of other temples during the reign of King Sejo as well as Buddhist temples.

  • Establishing a renewal plan and practical use of Jungam temple, which exists natural monuments, including national treasures and Gangwondo cultural materials, at Jungseon is as important as anything else. To discuss the renewal plan and the practical use of Jungam temple, this thesis is composed with the next series of processes. First, this thesis presents examining a relationship between Jajang, who was a buddhist monk and caused a departure point of foundation of the temple, and Jungam temple is necessary; thus, the relationship of his architectural consciousness and Jungam temple was showed in this thesis. Second, this thesis demonstrates present conditions for extant facilities and features of the space structure for Jungam temple to look into architectural characteristics of Jungam temple. Third, this thesis shows preservation of Jungam temple because this temple is the historic cultural resource; in addition, this thesis explains restoring of lost elements for points, repairing shipments regarding the whole area of preservation targets, expansion of the area nearby historic cultural resources to make plans for maintaining Jungam temple. Finally, this thesis concludes the final result of Jungam temple to work towards becoming the contemporarily historic cultural resource by designating Jungam temple as the historic site and suggesting energization by public participation and experience programs to continuously manage Jungam temple.

A Study on Stone Platforms of the Buseoksa Temple - In Relations to the "Hwaeomgyeong" and "Sipjipum" - (부석사의 석단 고찰 - "화엄경"."십지품"과의 관계를 중심으로 -)

  • 1) The structural system of "Hwaeomgyeong" has its core in the fact it deals with certain themes repeatedly on the basis of "Sipjipum" as a system of discipline.( The key of Euisang's ideas lay in referring to the whole "Hwaeomgyeong" as Beopseong and expressing it with the term, 'Haeng'. Here 'Haeng' is a system of discipline based on "Sipjipum". This indicates that "Hwaeomgyeong" can be fully represented just by "Sipjipum" because the twos are structurally similar) (1) In "Sipjipum", a summary of "Hwaeomgyeong" is contained. Thus descriptions of "Sipjipum" may be like those of "Hwaeomgyeong". (2) "Hwaeomgyeong" had a three-dimensional spatial structure which corresponds with the Heaven of Yok Gye Yuk Cheon and the Earth, when associated with places of preaching Buddhist sermons. 2) This researcher investigated stone platforms of the Buseoksa Temple with references to "Hwaeomgyeong" and "Sipjipum". 1) All the platforms, whether their building is still remained on them or not, comply better with implications of "Sipjipum". 2) Different heights of the stone platforms and the axial refraction of the platforms brought by their shape changes all imply variations in discipline levels descrided in "Sipjipum", in terms of form and symbolic implication. Sites which mainly compose the stone platforms also comply with descriptions contained in "Hwaeomgyeong" regarding the place, frequency and contents of preaching Buddhist sermons. In conclusion, the outside of the Buseoksa Temple is composed of architectural spaces for which contents of "Hwaeomgyeong" and "Sipjipum" and the frequency and place of preaching Buddhist sermons are fully considered and comprehended.

A Study on the Official Building Register of Korean Traditional Temple - Focused on the Official Building Register of Beomeo-sa - (한국불교 전통사찰의 건축물공부(建築物公簿)에 관한 연구 -범어사 건축물대장을 중심으로-)

  • This thesis is to analyze the origin and transformation of the official building registers of Korean traditional temples, and also to suggest the amendment of their wrong archives. Especially, this study is to examine these subjects focused on Beomeo-sa which has maintained fine registers. The results are as follow; 1. In Chosun Dynasty, the Ip-an had been used, and in the period of Daehan-Empire, the Ga-gei had been used as each official registers for the common buildings. The other hand, the lists of properties and the legal registers had been used as official registers for the temple buildings between 1911 and 1962. 2. The current official building registers have been firstly recorded under in 1962. At that time, the current official registers have been also recorded for the Buddhist temple buildings. 3. Most of the official building registers of Buddhist temples are incomplete. Especially, these have usually the indistinct building names and wrong building areas. These were mainly caused by direct copying of the old registers recorded in 1956, the period of Buddhist confusion. Furthermore, the registers have been poorly operated by monks and offices. 4. Therefore, the registers has to be corrected as follow; The omitted buildings have to be added and the duplicated buildings have to be removed in the summary heading registers. The indistinct building names recorded in 1956 have to be correct into actual proper building names. The wrong building areas recorded in 1956 have to be correct into actual measurement building areas.

Metallurgical Observation of the Buddhist Bell of Youngmoon Mountain Sangwonsa Temple (용문산 상원사 범종의 금속학적 고찰)

  • The microstructure, chemical composition, and lead isotope ratio of the Buddhist bell of Yongmoon Mountain Sangwonsa temple, which was selected as one of the three great bells of Korea by Japanese historians, were analyzed in order to estimate the origin of the material and the time of casting. The microstructure of the temple bell was composed of a copper matrix phase with ${\alpha}$, a face centered cubit lattice structure, a ${\delta}$ phase with $Cu_{41}$ $(Sn,Ag,Sb)_{11}$ as the chemical structural formula, dispersed lead and $Cu_2S$ particles, and locally agglomerated fine particles. Through analysis of the chemical composition of the bell, a criterion (Pb: 0-3.0 wt%, Sn: 10-15 wt%) for distinguishing the bells of the Shilla dynasty from the bells of the Koryo Chosun dynasty is proposed. Examining the lead isotope ratio of $^{207}Pb/^{206}Pb$ and $^{208}Pb/^{206}Pb$ of the Buddhist bell of Sangwonsa temple proved that the bell was fabricated using raw materials in South Korea, which led to the conclusion that the bell was cast in Korea and the top board of the bell has been damaged by an unknown individual. The criteria of distinguishing the bells from the Shilla dynasty from the bells of the Koryo Chosun dynasty presented for the first time in this research is expected to aid in identifying and estimating the previously unclear production years of other bells.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate of the dietary life and nutritional status of the Buddhist priests. Dietary life, the state of prepare a meal and menu are carried out through the questionnaire and the nutritional status is carried out through the analysis of the constituents of the blood. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The traditional temple's foods undergo a change with the variety and westernization of dietary life. 2. Buddhist priests take a carbohydrate centered meal and the intake of protein and lipid is tendency to lack, but the intake of vitamin and mineral is sufficient with various vegetables. 3. The content of the lipid compoents and glucose of blood are low and they are free from the danger of geriatric diseases but the content of triglyceride is very higher than the healthy general adults. Therefore it is necessary to improve the nutritional status of the buddhist priests with decrease the intake of rice and increase the various side dish and to develop the standard menu for the Buddhist priests.

The Manufacturing Time and Influence of the Buddhist Metal Artifacts Excavated from Heungjeon-ri Temple Site (삼척 흥전리사지 출토 불교공예품의 제작시기와 영향 관계)

  • Various Buddhist metal artifacts were excavated from the Heungjeon-ri Temple site from 2014 to 2020, such as gilt-bronze openwork decorations, a bronze kundika, a lion incense burner with a handle and lion weight, and so on. The gilt-bronze openwork decoration founded from the main hall of the western area is believed to have been used for the decoration of the Buddhist temple, and it is considered to be the best example of the gilt-bronze openwork decorations of the unified Silla that have been discovered so far. The incense burner with a handle and lion weight excavated from Heungjeon-ri Temple site is the earliest example of the style. The bronze kundikas excavated at the Heungjeon-ri Temple site have a more developed style than those of Ingaksa Temple. The bronze bowl and bronze bowl with a lid are similar to those excavated from the Anapji, Hwangryongsa Temple site, and Inwangdong Temple site. So these bronze vessels seem to have spread from the capital city to the provinces. Bronze seals excavated from the Heungjeon-ri Temple site are similar to those of the Hwangnyongsa Temple site in form and font. So, it was considered that they were produced and sent by the royal palace. In addition, "梵雄官衙之印" on the seal can be said to show that Heungjeonri Temple site was related to the organization of the monks at the time. The Buddhist metal artifacts excavated from Heungjeon-ri Temple site are believed to have been used from the early to mid-9th century at the temple by the Seon Order monk who was the main character of the monument. It can be said to be an important example of how the royal palace of Unified Silla and local crafts had a two-way influence, not a one-way influence, from the first half to the middle of the 9th century.

Origin and Development of the Buddhist Rock Cave Temples of India - in Relation with Hinduism, Jainism, Ajivika - (인도 불교석굴사원의 사원과 전개 - 힌두교, 자이나교, 아지빅파의 관련과 함께 -)

  • Early Buddhist rock cave temples of India, in spite of being an origin of Buddhist temples, has little been studied in Korea. After field studies and an interpretation of their forms in conjunction with religious life, precedent theories are supplemented and refuted as follows. Starting from the 2nd century B,C., Buddhist ascetic disciples digged residential rock caves, called vihara, for protection from monsoon rain and hot weather, A typical arrangement was settled -a courtyard type, with 3 side rows of tiny one-person bedroom and a front veranda with columns. Also digged were Chaitya caves, in line with viharas, to worship, which is the tumulus of Buddha's relics. I suggest that the original type of chaitya a simple circle cave with a stupa, suitable for circumambulating ceremonies. I refute the existing theory presenting Barabar caves of Ajivika as a chaitya origin, featuring empty circular room without a stupa. I also interpret a typical apsidal plan as being a simple result of adding a place of worshipping rites in front of the stupa. Enclosing columns around a cylindrical stupa is a result of reinforcing both the divine space and circumambulating ceremonies, with elongation toward hall. Finally the chaitya came to have a grandeur apsidal plan with high vault ceiling nave and a side aisle as in Western cathedrals with large frontal horseshoe arch windows. The Buddha image, which had become a new worshipping object, was integrated into the stupa and interior surface. First the stupa and then the statue was introduced to residential Viharas. Therefore, I suggest that the vihara should be renamed as 'chaitya' as a worshipping place, by establishing statue rooms without bedrooms at all. The functionally changed vihara is similar in form to a 'rectangular type of chaitya', little known and developed in different routes. A columned inner courtyard gradually becama an offering place, like Hindu mandapa, Buddhist caves ware changed to a kind of Tantric and Hindu temple by means of statue worshipping offering rituals.

A Study on 'Monk Daegwak's Joongchanggundo' at Seon-Am Temple -Mainly about the Time of Drawing and Background- (선암사 '대각국사중창건도'연구 -제작시기와 배경을 중심으로-)

  • There is a temple drawing called Monk Daegwak's Joongchanggundo at Seon-Am Temple of which the time of creation is unknown. This drawing shows the details of Seon-Am Temple and surrounding areas well, which helps to understand the construction of Seon-Am Temple and other small mountain temples. The records on the top also describe the surrounding landscape in the Fengshui aspect, and describes the number of buildings at Seon-Am Temple. According to the construction style that gives clues about the age of this drawing, the time range can be narrowed down in order to approximate the age of this drawing through the Buddhist trends of Seon-Am Temple. In the results, it was estimated that the drawing dates back to the time when Seon-Am Temple flourished in the mid-18th Century as it's competition with the temple of Songgwang actually began. Buddhism considers the relationship between teacher and student as the most important and the principals were delivered through this relationship. Therefore, the activities to increase the connection between monks and this drawing were created in order to indicate the atmosphere of the Seon-Am Temple of the time.
