  • The precast-buckling restrained braces(PC-BRB) reinforced with engineering plastics that can compensate for the disadvantages in the manufacturing process of the existing buckling restrained brace. In this study, to examine the applicability of PC-BRB to actual structures, example structures similar to school facilities were selected and the reinforcement effect was analyzed analytically according to the damping design procedure of PC-BRB. Load-displacement curve through the incremental loading test appeared similar to the bilinear curve. Applying test result, Analytical model of PC-BRB model was constructed and applied to the example structure. As a result of the analysis, the PC-BRB showed stable hysteresis behavior without lowering the strength, and the inter story drift ratio and the shear force were reduced due to the damping effect. In addition, the reduction ratio of the shear force was similar to the reduction ratio assumed when designing the damping device.

  • Stainless steels are commonly employed in engineering applications since they have superior properties such as low maintenance cost, and high temperature and corrosion resistance. These features allow them to be preferred in cylindrical shell structures as well. The behavior of a cylindrical shell structure made of stainless steel can be quite different from that made of carbon steel, as the material properties differ from each other. This paper deals with buckling behavior of axially loaded cylindrical shells made of stainless-steel. For this purpose, a combined experimental and numerical study was carried out. The experimental study comprised of testing of 18 cylindrical specimens. Following the experimental study, a numerical study was first conducted to validate test results. The comparisons show that finite element models provide good agreement with test results. Then, a numerical parametric study consisting of 450 models was performed to develop more generalized design recommendations for axially compressed cylindrical shell structures made of stainless steel. A simple formula was proposed for the practical design purposes. In other words, buckling strength curve equation is developed for three different fabrication quality.

  • The advance in technology of the CWR in Korea has led the establishment of the CWR on the sharp curve (i.e. less than R=600m). As thermit welding used in the sharp-curved construction site is carried out on the curve track, it is difficult to adjust a curve shape accurately and these difficulties have occurred in a number of cases. Therefore, in this study, the lateral buckling analysis of CWR track was carried out considering the actual ballast resistance force. In addition, the cant and vertical resistance force in ballast was considered in order to predict the initial behaviour of bucking in track under the more accurate method.

  • Most container ships are currently being constructed as Ultra-Large Container Ships. Hence, the equipment of the ships is also becoming relatively large. In particular, propellers, rudders, and rudder stocks are large in the stern structure, and in relation, efficient design of the hull structures to safely secure these parts is important. The bottom shell plate surface of a stern skeg is a perforated plate from which the rudder stock penetrates, so it is an important component for the stern structure. In this paper, to determine the critical buckling of the shell plate, an interaction curve equation for the two-axis compression of the shell plate was derived using the maximum value of the static structural stress multiplier in a load multiplier mode. This equation predicts the timing of the buckling occurrence. By analyzing this interaction curve equation, the buckling behavior of the plates subjected to a combination load was determined and the usefulness of applying it to ship building was investigated.

  • This paper presents the results of analytical invesstigation of the buckling behavior of thin-walled box-section column. Throughout this investigation, the single curve for finding the buckling stress at each effective slenderness ratio is derived by modification of the Rankine's formula. The applicable formula in the small slederness region is derived by considering the inelastic behavior of material. Additionally, the bifurcation criterion(slenderness ratio) which can distinguish between the local and overall buckling mode shapes is suggested by equating the local and overall buckling stresses. The overall buckling formula is closely concurrent with the experiments for the rectangular tubes.

  • In this paper, the tension-compression fatigue test method and the fatigue life characteristics of carbon fabric/epoxy laminate coupon are presented. To avoid the buckling during the compression, a proper design for the test coupons is essential. The critical buckling loads for the coupons are calculated by assuming the coupons as columns under two types of fixed conditions. The first is that both ends of each coupon are perfectly clamped, the second is that both ends of each coupon are simply supported. The strain-load curves are obtained by compressing the representative coupons, on each surface of which a strain gage is attached. The buckling loads obtained from the tests are all between the two calculated critical buckling loads. All the coupons are broken by the compression during the fatigue tests. It is estimated to be the reason that the fatigue load causes delamination before the eventual failure of each coupon, and sequentially the micro-buckling in the delaminated region drives each coupon into fatigue failure during the compression. The S-N curve, the fatigue life characteristics of carbon fabric/epoxy is obtained.

  • Laminated rubber bearings are widely used as a key component in seismic isolation of structural systems subjected to earthquake loadings. The combination of rubber layers and reinforcing steel shims makes the bearings conditionally unstable similar to buckling of ordinary columns. The shear flexibility of these short columns can lead to relatively low buckling Toads which may be further reduced when high shear strains are simultaneously imposed As an analytical approach, the area reduction formula has been proposed to account for the reduction in buckling load due to shear, but the degree of conservatism is unknown. In order to complement analytical approaches, a non-linear finite element analysis can be used. In this paper, a numerical study which aims at determining the effect of high shear strain on the critical load of elastomeric bearings is presented. From the load-displacement curve at each specified shear displacement, the buckling load can be obtained using the Southwell procedures. The results obtained are then compared against the theoretical predictions in order to examine the validity and the conservatism of the theoretical formulas.

  • Based on third-order shear deformation shell theory, the present paper investigates post-buckling properties of eccentrically stiffened metal foam curved shells/panels having initial geometric imperfectness. Metal foam is considered as porous material with uniform and non-uniform models. The single-curve porous shell is subjected to in-plane compressive loads leading to post-critical stability in nonlinear regime. Via an analytical trend and employing Airy stress function, the nonlinear governing equations have been solved for calculating the post-buckling loads of stiffened geometrically imperfect metal foam curved shell. New findings display the emphasis of porosity distributions, geometrical imperfectness, foundation factors, stiffeners and geometrical parameters on post-buckling properties of porous curved shells/panels.

  • The parts of pile, above the soil and embedded in the soil are called the first region and second region, respectively. The forth order differential equations of both region for critical buckling load of partially embedded pile with shear deformation are obtained using the small-displacement theory and Winkler hypothesis. It is assumed that the behavior of material of the pile is linear-elastic and that axial force along the pile length and modulus of subgrade reaction for the second region to be constant. Shear effect is included in the differential equations by considering shear deformation in the second derivative of the elastic curve function. Critical buckling loads of the pile are calculated for by differential transform method (DTM) and analytical method, results are given in tables and variation of critical buckling loads corresponding to relative stiffness of the pile are presented in graphs.

  • This study presents an improved method that uses the elastic and inelastic system buckling analyses for determining the K-factors of steel column members. The inelastic system buckling analysis is based on the tangent modulus theory for a single column and the application is extended to the frame structural system. The tangent modulus of an inelastic column is first derived as a function of nominal compressive stress from the column strength curve given in the design codes. The tangential stiffness matrix of a beam-column element is then formulated by using the so-called stability function or Hermitian interpolation functions. Two inelastic system buckling analysis procedures are newly proposed by utilizing nonlinear eigenvalue analysis algorithms. Finally, a practical method for determining the K-factors of individual members in a steel frame structure is proposed based on the inelastic and/or elastic system buckling analyses. The K-factors according to the proposed procedure are calculated for numerical examples and compared with other results in available references.
