In this review, the use of air bubbles in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations was discussed. The foam bubbles show different characteristics depending on the foaming agents and foam generating devices. The foam bubbles are generated in the form of dispersion of gas bubbles in a solvent. The assessment of stability and rheological properties of bubbles are the starting point for the formulation to be used. Pharmaceutical and cosmetic uses of bubbles are substantially growing, and the foam formulations of drugs can be used for rectal, vaginal, and dermal symptoms. The foam formulation is used in hair mousse, makeup foundation, and sunscreen cosmetics in basic cosmetics. Recently, a lot of studies and patents have been filed in stabilization of active ingredients and delivery of the active ingredient in terms of foam formulations. In the future, foam formulations are expected to be used as novel cosmeceutical formulations.
The main objectives of this research are to investigate characteristics of ozone solubility due to low solubility of conventional bubbles-ozone generators, evaluate the treatment characteristics of reclaiming textile wastewater for industrial water by means of micro/nano bubbles-dissolved ozone flotation(MNB-DOF) process. The textile wastewater used in this research was obtained from final effluent of the textile wastewater in B city. There is a 400L reactor which consists of a micro-nano bubble system and a ozone generator for experiments. As a result of generating micro-nano bubbles (below $0.5{\mu}m$) by using of MNB-DOF process, it improved ozone solubility due to higher ozone transfer rates. Consequently, the shorter ozonation time clearly indicates the lower power costs. The reported results clearly indicated that MNB-DOF process can be effectively and inexpensively. Results of the experiments through MNB-DOF process in this study satisfy all reclaiming standards as industrial water: pH 6.5~8.5, SS 10 mg/L or below, $BOD_5$) 6 mg/L or below, turbidity 10 NTU or below, Coliforms 1,000/100 mL or below. Therefore there is a possibility of the reclaiming of the textile wastewater as industrial water.
In late summer of 2001, a new disease "overturn disease" occurred among mud loach (Misgurnus mizolepis) cultured in a farm Chonbuk Province. The fish exhibited a lethargic, erratic and spiral swimming at the water surface. Affected fish showed swollen abdomen with accumulation of air bubbles in the intestinal canal. The bubbles were much larger in the anterior part than in the posterior part. Hematological and histopathological examinations were done. No significant differences were found in RBC count, Ht value and Hb concentration between the diseased and the healthy fish. Gill filaments showed proximal hyperplasia of the respiratory epithelia and fusing of the gill lamella. Hemorrhage and necrosis occurred in the intestinal epithelia and within the lamina propria, and the mucosal epithelia were separated from the muscularis. Hepatocytes underwent atrophy. In the fish experimentally tied between the annal fin and the anus by a thread to confirm accumulation of air bubbles within intestine, accumulation of air bubbles was confirmed. This disease in mud loach appeared to be induced by circulatory disturbances in the intestinal wall owing to accumulation of air bubbles in the alimentary canal after fed high protein diet throughout all culturing period.
In this study, an improved acetone-water fractional precipitation process for paclitaxel using ultrasonic cavitation bubbles and gas bubbles was developed. Compared to the conventional method, the time required for precipitation has been reduced by 20~25 times. In addition, the particle size of paclitaxel decreased by 3.5~5.5 times and the diffusion coefficient of paclitaxel increased by 3.5~6.7 times. In the case of precipitation using ultrasonic cavitation bubbles, as the ultrasonic power increased and the temperature decreased, the precipitation rate constant increased. In the case of precipitation using gas bubbles, as the gas flow rate increased and the temperature decreased, the precipitation rate constant increased. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the exothermic, irreversible, and nonspontaneous nature of the improved fractional precipitation.

A new cavitating model by using bubble size distribution based on bubbles-mass has been proposed. Both liquid and vapor phases are treated with Eulerian framework as a mixture containing minute cavitating bubbles. In addition vapor phase consists of various sizes of vapor bubbles, which are distributed to classes based on their mass. The bubble number-density for each class was solved by considering the change of the bubble-mass due to phase change as well as generation of new bubbles due to heterogeneous nucleation. In this method, the bubble-mass is treated as an independent variable, and the other dependent variables are solved in spatial coordinates and bubble-mass coordinate. Firstly, we employed this method to calculate bubble nucleation and growth in stationary super-heated liquid nitrogen, and bubble collapse in stationary sub-cooled one. In the case of bubble growth in super-heated liquid, bubble number-density of the smallest class based on its mass is increased due to the nucleation. These new bubbles grow with time, and the bubbles shift to larger class. Therefore void fraction of each class is increased due to the growth in the whole class. On the other hand, in the case of bubble collapse in sub-cooled liquid, the existing bubbles are contracted, and then they shift to smaller class. It finally becomes extinct at the smallest one. Secondly, the present method is applied to a cavitating flow around NACA00l5 foil. Liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen are employed as working fluids. Cavitation number, $\sigma$, is fixed at 0.15, inlet velocities are changed at 5, 10, 20 and 50m/s. Inlet temperatures are 90K in case of liquid nitrogen, and 90K and 1l0K in case of liquid oxygen. 110K of oxygen is corresponding to the 90K of nitrogen because of the same relative temperature to the critical one, $T_{r}$=$T/T_c^{+}$. Cavitating flow around the NACA0015 foils was properly analyzed by using bubble size distribution. Finally, the method is applied to a cavitating flow in an inducer of the LE-7A hydrogen turbo-pump. This inducer has 3 spiral foils. However, for simplicity, 2D calculation was carried out in an unrolled channel at 0.9R cross-section. The channel moves against the fluid at a peripheral velocity corresponding to the inducer revolutions. Total inlet pressure, $Pt_{in}$, is set at l00KPa, because cavitation is not generated at a design point, $Pt_{in}$=260KPa. The bubbles occur upstream of the foils and collapse between them. Cavitating flow in the inducer was successfully predicted by using the bubble size distribution.

Bubbles generated by various causes in the ocean are known to persist for long periods of time. Although the volume occupied by bubbles in the ocean is small, the presence of bubbles in ocean due to resonance and attenuation greatly affects the acoustic properties. Accordingly, bistatic reverberation experiment was performed in the ocean where artificial bubbles exist. A number of transducers and receivers were installed on 6 buoys arranged in a hexagonal shape, and blowing agents were dropped in the center of the buoy to generate bubbles. For reverberation modeling that reflects acoustic characteristics changed by bubbles, the spatial distribution of bubbles was estimated using video data and received signals. A measurement-based bubble spectral shape was used, and it was assumed that the bubble density within the spatial distribution of the estimated bubble was the same. As a result, it was confirmed that the bubble reverberation was simulated in a time similar to the measured data regardless of the bubble density, and the bubble reverberation level similar to the measured data was simulated at a void fraction of about 10-7 ~ 10-6.8.

Size verification of small and large bubbles in a bubble column was investigated by employing the dynamic gas disengagement (DGD) method and dual electrical resistivity probe (DRP) method, simultancously. The holdups of large and small bubbles in the bubble column in a given operating condition were obtained by means of the DGD method by measuring the pressure drop variation in the column with a variation of time after stopping the gas input into the column. The size and frequency of bubbles were measured by the DRP method in the same operating condition, from which the bubble holdup of each range of size was obtained. The verification of size in determining the large or small bubbles was decided by comparing the holdups of large or small bubbles measured by the DGD method with that measured by the DRP method. Filtered compressed air and tap water were used as a gas and a continuous liquid medium. The diameter and height of the bubble column were 0.102 m and 1.5 m, respectively. The demarcation size between the large and the small bubbles in the bubble column was 4.0~5.0 mm; the demarcation size was about 5.0 mm when the gas velocity was in the relatively low range, but about 4.0 mm when the gas velocity was in the relatively high range, within this experimental conditions.
Space Physics Sensor onboard the KOMPSAT-1, which was launched at 1999, had transmitted ionospheric data during the solar maximum from June 2000 to August 2001. When the KOMPSAT-1 has passed the equatorial region, equatorial bubbles, in which the electron density abruptly decreases, had frequently been detected. Statistical analysis of the data obtained during the entire operational period shows equatorial bubbles frequently occur across the Atlantic region where the geomagnetic field strength is weak. Also, equatorial bubbles occur more frequently for lower Kp index. The results are in good agreement with the previous observations by DMSP satellites and radio experiments at the Peruvian sector The correlation between electron density and the electron temperature shows various behaviors from event to event.
In this paper we examine a total of 16 dipolarization events that were observed by THEMIS spacecraft in space close to geosynchronous orbit, r < ${\sim}7\;R_E$. For the identified events, we examine the characteristics of the plasma flows and associated bubbles as defined based on $pV^{5/3}$, where p is the plasma pressure and V the volume of unit magnetic flux. First, we find that the flow speed in the near-geosynchronous region is very low, mostly within a few tens of km/s, except for a very few events for which the flow can rise up to ~200 km/s but only very near the dipolarization onset time. Second, the bubble parameter, $pV^{5/3}$, decreases by a much smaller factor after the dipolarization onset than for the events in the farther out tail region. We suggest that the magnetic dipolarization in the near-geosynchronous region generates or is associated with only very weak plasma bubbles. Such bubbles in the near-geosynchronous region would penetrate earthward only by a small distance before they stop at an equilibrium position or drift around the Earth.
The evolution of a high burnup structure (HBS) in a light water reactor (LWR) $UO_2$ fuel was simulated using the Potts model. A simulation system for the Potts model was defined as a two-dimensional triangular lattice, for which the stored energy was calculated from both the irradiation damage of the $UO_2$ matrix and the formation of a grain boundary in the newly recrystallized small HBS grains. In the simulation, the evolution probability of the HBS is calculated by the system energy difference between before and after the Monte Carlo simulation step. The simulated local threshold burnup for the HBS formation was 62 MWd/kgU, consistent with the observed threshold burnup range of 60-80 MWd/kgU. The simulation revealed that the HBS was heterogeneously nucleated on the intergranular bubbles in the proximity of the threshold burnup and then additionally on the intragranular bubbles for a burnup above 86 MWd/kgU. In addition, the simulation carried out under a condition of no bubbles indicated that the bubbles played an important role in lowering the threshold burnup for the HBS formation, thereby enabling the HBS to be observed in the burnup range of conventional high burnup fuels.
