  • The present paper aims at improving the modeling of turbulence for the upward turbulent bubbly flow through the use of experimental databases that contain data on small and large vertical ducts. First, the role of bubble-induced turbulence was analyzed, which indicated the dominant role of the bubble-induced turbulence in the duct center for relatively high void fraction cases. Therefore, the turbulence therein was mainly focused on, which indicated that the stronger turbulence could be induced by bubbles in large ducts with similar void fractions as compared to that in small ducts. Next, the turbulence of upward turbulent bubbly flow near the wall is discussed to understand the interaction between the wall-induced and bubble-induced turbulence. It showed that the existence of a wall could suppress the bubble-induced turbulence given the same void fraction, and the existence of bubbles could also suppress the solely wall-induced turbulence as compared to the single-phase turbulent flow, even though the total turbulence is enhanced. The above characteristics indicated that the current turbulence modeling method needs to be modified, especially when the bubble-induced turbulence plays a dominant role.

  • Although DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) has been successfully accepted for water and wastewater treatment, the fundamental characteristics of the process have not been fully investigated. Water is saturated with compressed air to dissolve the air into the water at high pressure in saturation tank. Then the water containing dissolved air is released into a floatation tank at a lower pressure, generating micro-bubbles that rise gently through the water and carry the suspended matter to the surface. This study investigated the removal of sewage using automatic mixture type DAF pump and non-powered flotation tank. Characteristics of two devices were compared and analyzed with samples. The results showed that the PAC exhibited higher performance than other coagulants. When air dosage was 2.5ml/l/min, treatment was stable in operation. In the DAF pump with a pressure of 4 atm., the average size of bubbles was 36.2${\mu}m$. Removal efficiency of SS was 80%. At this time removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, of T-N was 30% and T-P was 70% in stable operation. It was concluded that DAF pump system with micro bubble performed higher efficiencies compared to general DAF system for treating wastewater.

  • This paper describes the discharge characteristics of liquid nitrogen for plane-plane, needle-plane electrode at variation of gap spacing at atmospheric pressure. The important results obtained from this study are as follows. (1) Breakdown voltage of $LN_2$ for needle-plane electrode is higher than that of for plane-plane electrode and discharge duration tine is longer with increase of gap spacing at atmospheric pressure. (2) The formation of bubbles by evaporation is observed in spite of non-applying source at atmospheric pressure and the creation of corona confirmed for plane-plane electrode results from the bubbles. (3) The applied voltage-discharge magnitude( V-Q) characteristics of $LN_2$ showed hysteresis and the discharge magnitude decreasing and corona voltage increasing proportional to the pulse per second at atmospheric pressure.

  • As the wave impinges on and overtops the structure, a large highly aerated region is created in front of the structure and water splashs on top of the structure. The broken wave in front of the structure and associated green water on top of the structure are highly aerated containing not only a large number of bubbles but also very large sizes of bubbles. In this paper, the velocity field of the highly aerated region and the splashing water on the top is measured using a modified PIV method incorporating the traditional PIV method with the shadowgraphy technigue by correlating the ' texture ' of the bubble images. The velocity fields of a plunging wave impacting on a structure in a two-dimensional wave flume is measured. It is found that the maximum fluid particle velocity in flout of the structure during the impinging process is about 1.5 times the phase speed of the wave, while the maximum horizontal velocity above the top is less than the phase speed, It is also found that the dam breaking solution does not work well in predicting the green water velocity.

  • This study investigatesthe coloration mechanism by identifying the factor that affects thered coloration of copper red glazesin traditional Korean ceramics. The characteristics of the reduction-fired copper red glaze's sections are analyzed using an optical microscope, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The sections observed using an optical microscope are divided into domains of surface, red-bubble, and red band. According to the Raman micro spectroscopy analysis results, the major characteristic peak is identified as silicate in all three domains, and the intensity of $Cu_2O$ increases toward the red band. In addition, it is confirmed that the most abundant CuO exists in the glaze bubbles. Moreover, CuO and $Cu_2O$ exist as fine particles in a dispersed state in the surface domain. Thus, Cu combined with oxygen is distributed evenly throughout the copper red glaze, and $Cu_2O$ is more concentrated toward the interface between body and glaze. It is also confirmed that CuO is concentrated around the bubbles. Therefore, it is concluded that the red coloration of the copper red glaze is revealed not only through metallic Cu but also through $Cu_2O$ and CuO.

  • The determination of the shape and rising velocity of gas bubbles in a liquid pool is of great importance in analyzing the radioactive aerosol emissions from nuclear power plant accidents in terms of the fission product release rate and the pool scrubbing efficiency of radioactive aerosols. This article suggests a simple parameterization for the gas bubble rising velocity as a function of the volume-equivalent bubble diameter; this parameterization does not require prior knowledge of bubble shape. This is more convenient than previously suggested parameterizations because it is given as a single explicit formula. It is also shown that a bubble shape diagram, which is very similar to the Grace's diagram, can be easily generated using the parameterization suggested in this article. Furthermore, the boundaries among the three bubble shape regimes in the $E_o-R_e$ plane and the condition for the bypass of the spheroidal regime can be delineated directly from the parameterization formula. Therefore, the parameterization suggested in this article appears to be useful not only in easily determining the bubble rising velocity (e.g., in postulated severe accident analysis codes) but also in understanding the trend of bubble shape change due to bubble growth.

  • Cavitation is the formation of vapour bubbles of a flowing liquid in a region where the pressure of the liquid falls below its vapor pressure. Various types of cavitations are generated on the propeller blades. As cavity bubbles passing the blade are forced to oscillate in size or shape and come to collapse, they cause very strong local acoustic waves in the fluid and radiate noise. Comparing the Sound Pressure Level(SPL) before and after cavitation, SPL increases 2dB per 1 knot increase in ship speed above the cavitation inception speed(CIS). Consequently, the CIS is an important criteria to design silent propellers. In this work, experimental measurements of radiated noise according to various types of cavitations from the model propeller are carried out in a large cavitation tunnel and their acoustical characteristics are extensively investigated.

  • Ultrasonically induced bubble formation in thermoplastic matrix was investigated experimentally and theoretically. polystyrene was saturated with nitrogen under the pressure of 0.2 to 3.45 MPa in a pressure chamber, followed by pressure release and ultrasonic bubble nucleation. Zinc stearate was added to polystyrene as the nucleating agent to induce heterogeneous nucleation. Various mixture of low density polyethylene and polyethylene wax was also saturated with the gas. The foamed specimens with or without ultrasonically induced bubble nucleation was modeled by modifying the classical nucleation theory. The rate of ultrasonic nucleation was predicted for homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation at a conical cavity. This study showed that the heterogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation at a conical cavity. This study showed that the heterogeneous nucleation must be employed for ultrasonic production of bubbles in a viscous fluid and the homogeneous nucleation for ultrasonic production of bubbles in a low viscosity fluid.

  • Recently, cavitation on the surface of mechanical heart valve has been studied as a cause of fractures occurring in implanted Mechanical Heart Valves (MHVs). It has been conceived that the MHVs mounted in an artificial heart close much faster than in vivo sue, resulting in cavitation bubbles formation. In this study, six different kinds of mono leaflet and bileaflet valves were mounted in the mitral position in an Electro-Hydraulic Total Artificial Heart (EHTAH), and we investigated the mechanisms for MHV cavitation. The valve closing velocity and a high speed video camera were employed to investigate the mechanism for MHV cavitation. The closing velocity of the bileaflet valves was slower than that of the mono leaflet valves. Cavitation bubbles were concentrated on the edge of the valve stop and along the leaflet tip. It was established that squeeze flow holds the key to MHV cavitation in our study. Cavitation intensity increased with an increase in the valve closing velocity and the valve stop area. With regard to squeeze flow, the bileaflet valve with slow valve-closing velocity and small valve stop areas is better able to prevent blood cell damage than the monoleaflet valves.

  • The paper describes the electrical and optical properties of underwater discharges in highly inhomogeneous electric fields caused by 1.2/50 ${\mu}s$ impulse voltages as functions of the polarity and amplitude of the applied voltage, and various water conductivities. The electric fields are formed by a point-to-plane electrode system. The formation of air bubbles is associated with a thermal process of the water located at the tip of the needle electrode, and streamer coronas can be initiated in the air bubbles and propagated through the test gap with stepped leaders. The fastest streamer channel experiences the final jump across the test gap. The negative streamer channels not only have more branches but are also more widely spread out than the positive streamer channels. The propagation velocity of the positive streamer is much faster than that of the negative one and, in fact, both these velocities are independent of the water conductivity; in addition the time-lag to breakdown is insensitive to water conductivity. The higher the water conductivity the larger the pre-breakdown energy, therefore, the ionic currents do not contribute to the initiation and propagation of the underwater discharges in the test conditions considered.
