Pink rot of Palm was occurred at Yeuju area in 2001 and 2003. Infected plants showed rotting at the leaf-stock bases and killing of the terminal bud. The first symptoms are dark brown necrotic areas on the stem. Bases of infected frond may be covered with pink spores and the spots produced oozing gum pockets. Oozing lesions occur on the stems, and leaves turn brown and droop. The causal agent were isolated from salmon-pink spores sporulating on the leaf sheaths and necrotic stem tissues. Pathogen were isolated from freshly infected tissues were identified as Gliocladium vermoseni based on mycological characteristics. Fungus were grown plenty on PDA culture. Temperature for mycelial grown was tested at 5 to $40^{\circ}C$ and optimal temperature was $25^{\circ}C$ and was not nearly grew at temperature above $35^{\circ}C$. Artificial pathogenicity were tested on 9 species of Palm family in the wound inoculation and symptoms showed similar to those observed in the field. This is the first report on pink rot of palm in Korea.
Internal fruit rot of cucumber was observed in several locations in Korea. Incidence of the disease reached up to 21.5% and averaged 4.2% in the fields surveyed. The disease started at blossom ends of cucumber fruits. Internal tissues of infected fruit tips showed brown discoloration over 2 cm in length and 2 mm in diameter. Subsequently, the brown discoloration was extended into the carpels, and the surface of the infected fruit tips was rugged. Fungal isolates from the internal tissues of diseased fruits were identified as Didymella bryoniae based on mycological characteristics. Temperature for mycelial growth of isolates ranged $5{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ with optimal temperature between $26{\sim}28^{\circ}C$. Similar symptoms were developed in the internal part of the cucumber fruit when conidial suspensions of the isolates were inoculated to the flower of cucumber. Furthermore, Didymella bryoniae isolates from other plant parts of cucumber, watermelon, oriental melon, melon and pumpkin also showed the similar symptoms in the internal part of cucumber fruits by inoculation tests. Temperature range for occurrence of internal fruit rot of cucumber was $10{\sim}32^{\circ}C$ with optimal temperature of $25{\sim}28^{\circ}C$.
Soft rot disease on Raspberry (Rubus crataegifolius Bunge) was observed in sale boxes at Jinju City Wholesale Market of Agricultural Products in June 2010. The infected fruits were rapidly water-soaked, softened, black and eventually rotted. The colonies on the infected fruits were white to light brown, formed numerous sporangiospores. Optimum temperature for the mycelial growth of the causal fungus on PDA was $30^{\circ}C$ and growth was still apparent at $37^{\circ}C$. Sporangia were globose, white at early and gradually to black, and 40-210 ${\mu}m$ in diameter. Sporangiophores were white to mid brown as maturation and 8-20 ${\mu}m$ in diameter. Columella were globose to sub-globose, and the size of the diameter was 85-120 ${\mu}m$ in diameter. Sporangiospores were sub-globose, rhomboidal and irregular, streaked and 5-10 ${\mu}m$ in length. On the basis of symptom, mycological characteristics, ITS rDNA sequence analysis, and pathogenicity of the fungus, the causal fungus was clearly identified as Rhizopus oryzae Went & Prinsen Geerligs. This is the first report of soft rot by R. oryzae on R. crataegifolius in Korea.
Pink rot of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) occurred at Pyeongchang in Gangwon and at Bosung in Junnam province since 1999. The disease incidence in the surveyed areas was about 5% of harvested potatoes in 2002. Affected tubers showed a dull brown appearance and the lenticels and eyes on tubers turned dark brown. The cut surface of the diseased tuber colored faint pink and the entire surface of the diseased tuber becomes deep salmon pink within 30 min. The pathogen isolated from the diseased tubers was identified as Phytophthora erythroseptica based on morphological and cultural characteristics. Mycelial mat was fairly fluffy, rosette or stellate patterns and rounded or angular hyphal swellings were farmed in water, Temperature for mycelial growth was ranged from 5 to 3$0^{\circ}C$ and optimal temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. Non-papillate sporangia were persistent on stalk and ellipsoid, ovoid, obpyriform or distorted in shape, often with a constriction distal in the middle. Size of sporangia was 41.3~69.6$\times$26.8~47.4 (av, 55.5$\times$37.1) ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Sexuality of Phytophthora erythroseptica was homothallic. Oogonia were 30~46 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter and oospores were 28~35 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter, Elongated or cyclindrical antheridia were all amphigynous. This is the first report on potato pink rot caused by Phytophthora erythroseptica in Korea.
This experiment was carried out to evaluate the role of oxalic acid metabolism in the incipient decay of brown rotting, and to investigate the effects of various compositions of culture medium. Until 5days incubation, the amount of oxalic acid produced by Tyromyces palustris was increased, while pH was gradually decreased. The difference in oxalic acid production depending on carbon sources was not significant and the pH adjustment of media did not stimulate the production of oxalic acid. In this experiment, hemicellulose was hydrolyzed with 1% oxalic acid, so it is suggested that nonenzymatic acid hydrolysis of hemicelluloses might be involved in the process of incipient decay of brown-rot fungi.
Lipoxygenase and Kunitz trypsin inhibitor protein of mature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] seed are main anti-nutritional factors in soybean seed. A new soybean cultivar, "Gaechuck#1" with the traits of black seed coat, green cotyledon, lipoxygenase2,3 and Kunitz trypsin inhibitor protein free was developed. It was selected from the population derived the cross of "Gyeongsang#1" and C242. Plants of "Gaechuck#1" have a determinate growth habit with purple flowers, brown pubescence, black seed coat, black hilum, oval leaflet shape and brown pods at maturity. Seed protein and oil content on dry weight basis have averaged 39.1% and 16.2%, respectively. It has shown resistant reaction to soybean necrosis, soybean mosaic virus, Cercospora leaf spot and blight, black root rot, pod and stem blight, and soybean pod borer. "Gaechuck#1" matured on 5-10 October with a plant height of 50 cm. The 100-seed weight of "Gaechuck#1" was 23.2g. Yield of "Gaechuck#1" was averaged 2.2 ton/ha from 2005 to 2007.

In June 2013, surface rot symptoms were observed on sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) in Yeoju city, Korea. The lesions were circular, light to dark brown, firm, dry, and superficial. The diseased area became sunken in older tissues, and the symptoms usually did not extend deeply into the flesh. Seven isolates of Fusarium species were isolated from diseased sweet potatoes. All isolates were identified as Fusarium oxysporum based on morphological characteristics on CLA medium. To confirm the identification, molecular analysis of elongation factor 1 alpha gene was conducted. Among the isolates, however, four isolates were F. commune, and three isolates were F. oxysporum based on the DNA sequence data. Pathogenicity was tested using agar block inoculation on wounded or unwounded sweet potato pieces. Lesions were observed on wounded sweet potato pieces after 7 days inoculation in only F. commune isolates. This is the first report that F. commune causes Fusarium surface rot of sweet potato in Korea.
Ditylenchus destructor Thorne 1945 was found to be the causal organism of the new root rot disease of Panax ginseng, which occurred extensively in Dongseong area of Cheolweon-gun, Gangweon Province, Korea in 1982. Thirty-six percent of the investigated fields was damaged due to the potato rot nematode. Infected roots showed brown discoloration of cortex and suberization outside the cambium. Cortex of the severly infected roots became sponge-like in texture and cavity was produced in the central portion of the root. Only the severely infected ginseng plants exhibited sympotoms of sudden wilting of leaves. The number of potato rot nematode in such field soils was $8.5\~222/30g$ soil, while there was no such symptoms on leaves if the number was less than 7.
Stem rot of Stachys sieboldii occurred sporadically in the farmer's fields at Shindeung-myeon, Sancheonggun, Gyeongnam province in Korea. The infected leaves and stems are water-soaked, rotted, wilted and finally leads to the death of the whole plants. The sclerotia, 1-3 mm, white to brown, globoid, were formed on lesions and the surface of soil line. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation was $30^{\circ}C$ on potato dextrose agar. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus. On the basis of mycological characteristics and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report of stem rot on S. sieboldii caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.
Sclerotium rot on Pulsatilla koreana was observed in the exhibition field of Jinju Agriculture Technology Center in July 2013. The infected plants showed water-soaked, blighted and rotted symptoms. White mycelial mats spread over lesions, and then numerous sclerotia were formed on flower stalk and flower stem near the soil line. The sclerotia were globoid in shape, 1-3 mm in size and white to brown in color. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth and sclerotia formation on PDA was $30^{\circ}C$ and the hyphal width was $4-8{\mu}m$. The typical clamp connections were observed in the hyphae of the fungus grown on PDA. For molecular identification, the complete ITS rDNA sequence of the causal fungus was sequenced and analyzed. On the basis of mycological characteristics, ITS rDNA sequence analysis, and pathogenicity to host plants, this fungus was identified as Sclerotium rolfsii Saccardo. This is the first report of sclerotium rot on Pulsatilla koreana caused by S. rolfsii in Korea.
