  • In a batch reactor, the characteristics of photocatalytic degradation of brilliant blue FCF in titanium dioxide suspension was studied under the irradiation of ultra-violet ray. Photocatalytic degradation in anatase type of TiO$_2$ was more effective than in rutile type of $TiO_2$ below the dosage of 5g. The degradation rate was slightly increased with decreasing initial pH of brilliant blue FCF aqueous solution, but rapidly increased with the addition of oxidant. Potassium bromate acted as more effective oxidant than ammonium persulfate. The photocatalytic degradation rate of brilliant blue FCF was pseudo-first order with rate constants of 0.012, 0.006 and $0.003min^{-1}$ at initial pH 3.1, 5.2 and 7.1 of brilliant blue FCF solution, respectively.

  • In this paper, the adsorption behavior and kinetic characteristics of cibacron brilliant red 3B-A from aqueous solution using granular activated carbon were investigated. The effect of various parameters such as adsorbent dose, pH, initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption system were studied. Base on the estimated Langmuir constant ($R_L$) and Freundlich constant (1/n), This process could be employed as effective treatment method. From the Temkin constant (B) and Dubinin-Radushkevich constant (E), This adsorption process is physical adsorption. From kinetic experiments, the adsorption process followed the pseudo second order model with good correlation. Base on the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy, the adsorption of cibacron brilliant red 3B-A onto granular activated carbon was physisorption and endothermic in nature.

  • To identify genes involved in the decolorization of brilliant green, we isolated random mutants generated by transposon insertion in brilliant green-decolorizing bacterium, Citrobacter sp. The resulting mutant bank yielded 19 mutants with a complete defect in terms of the brilliant green color removing ability. Southern hybridization with a Tn5 fragment as a probe showed a single hybridized band in 7 mutants and these mutants appeared to have insertions at different sites of the chromosome. Tn5-inserted genes were isolated and the DNA sequence flanking Tn5 was determined. By comparing these with a sequence database, putative protein products encoded by bg genes were identified as follows: bg 3 as a LysR-type regulatory protein; bg 11 as a MalG protein in the maltose transport system; bg 14 as an oxidoreductase; and bg 17 as an ABC transporter. The sequences deduced from the three bg genes, bg 2, bg 7 and bg 16, showed no significant similarity to any protein with a known function, suggesting that these three bg genes may encode unidentified proteins responsible for the decolorization of brilliant green.

  • Brilliant green was examined as a detection reagent in the separation of some aliphatic alcohols, ketones and esters by the reverse-phase liquid chromatography. These samples not possessing chromophore could be indirectly detected by photometric detector with the assistance of brilliant green in visible range (625nm). Some mixtures of samples were also able to separated and detected with good base line resolution and comparatively high sensitivity.

  • Adsorption of brilliant blue FCF dye from aqueous solution using coconut shell based activated carbon was investigated. Batch experiments were carried out as function of adsorbent dose, initial concentration, contact time and temperature. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed by Langmuir and Freundlich model. The results indicate that Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Base on the estimated Freundlich constant (1/n=0.129~0.212), this process could be employed as effective treatment method. Adsorption kinetics experimental data were modeled using the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. It was shown that pseudo-second-order kinetic equation could best describe the adsorption kinetics. Base on the negative Gibbs free energy value (-4.81~-10.33 kJ/mol) and positive enthalpy value (+78.59 kJ/mol) indicate that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic process.

  • Experimental research on the preparation of photocatalyst for the decomposition of brilliant blue FCF ($C_{37}H_{31}O_9N_2S_3Na_2$) was performed. $TiO_2$ and ZnO powders were prepared from titanium (IV) sulfate and zinc acetate at low reaction temperature and atmospheric pressure by hydrothermal precipitation method without calcination. In addition, $TiO_2$ was prepared with cationic surfactant CTAB (Hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide) at the same conditions. The physical properties of prepared $TiO_2$ and ZnO, such as crystallinity, average particle size and absorbance, were investigated by XRD, Zeta-potential meter and DRS. And, the photocatalytic degradation of brilliant blue FCF has been studied in the batch reactor under UV radiation. For the photocatalysts prepared without CTAB, $TiO_2$ has smaller particle size and larger absorbance and photocatalytic reaction rate than ZnO. And $TiO_2$, prepared with CTAB whose concentration is 1/10 of that of precursor, shows 15% higher than that prepared without CTAB in final photocatalytic degradation ratio of brilliant blue FCF.

  • Adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of a brilliant green from aqueous solutions at various initial dye concentration (10~30 mg/L), contact time (1~24 h) and temperature (298~318 K) on zeolite were studied in a batch mode operation. The equilibrium adsorption values were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich model. The results indicate that Langmuir and Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Base on the estimated values of Langmuir dimensionless separation factor ($R_L=0.041{\sim}0.057$) and Freundlich constant (1/n=0.30~0.47), this process could be employed as effective treatment method. calculated values of adsorption energy by Dubinin-Radushkevich model were 1.564~1.857 kJ/mol corresponding to physical adsorption. The adsorption kinetics of brilliant green were best described by the pseudo second-order rate model and followed by intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, free energy, enthalpy and entropy were calculated to estimate nature of adsorption. negative Gibbs free energy (-10.3~-11.4 kJ/mol), positive enthalpy change (49.48 kJ/mol) and Arrehenius activation energy (27.05 kJ/mol) indicates that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic and physical adsorption process, respectively.
