  • This study conducted a subjective evaluation of brightness perception and visual discomfort according to dimming speeds and CCTs(Correlated Color Temperatures). Dimming speeds of two different CCT lights(2,700K, 6400K) were set to 1.7%/s, 3.3%/s, 5.0%/s, 6.7%/s, and 10.0%/s respectively. Subjects checked the time when they perceived the change of the brightness and visual discomfort. As a result, when dimming speeds were 1.7%/s, 3.3%/s, 5.0%/s, 6.7%/s, more than half of subjects responded the change of the brightness in 55.0~45.0% dimming ratios, and felt the visual discomfort in 35~25% dimming ratios. When the brightness was changed, dimming level responded to the brightness perception of hight CCT(6,400K) was higher about 8.0% then dimming level responded to the brightness perception of low CCT(2,700K). Dimming level responded to the visual discomfort of low CCT(2,700K) was higher about 5.0% then dimming level responded to the visual discomfort of hight CCT(6,400K).

  • Colour properties can be classified based on hue, brightness, and saturation, and the characteristics of colour perception vary by colour property. In terms of colour perception, surrounding colours are viewed together rather than independently, and the characteristics of the original colour perception may vary depending on the colour characteristics of the surrounding. Thus far, research on colour perception and sensibility has focused on a monotonic environment, which is different from colour perception in real life. As such, a fundamental study on colour perception considering surrounding colours must be conducted. In this study, a psychophysical experiment was conducted, and the results were analysed to study the colour perception characteristics by edge brightness, Edge brightness was set as a variable based on the visual traits that are most sensitive to brightness, and the experiment was conducted using the Munsell colour system to specify the stimulus colour. Based on the analysis of the experimental outcomes, this study reveals the significance of fundamental research data on the visual and perceptual characteristics of colour perception with regard to edge brightness and provides directions for future research.

  • This study has attempted to investigate how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort according to daylight responsive LED(Light Emitting Diode) dimming systems in the office with venetian blind. Two studies was conducted. First study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on angle control method of the venetian blind while the workplane illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. Second study is that how subjects perceive changes of brightness and their visual comfort depending on the amount of daylight penetrated into the building while the illuminance level is being maintained through daylight responsive LED dimming system. The results of this study could be proposed as basic data in the control of the venetian blind and LED lighting in consideration of their perception on changes of brightness and visual comfort.

  • This paper deals with the effects of fluorescent lamp description and luminance level on the occupant's brightness perception and other sensation in building interiors. The following experiments were conducted: the subjects compared on room lit by daylight fluorescent lamps with the other room lit by the different lamp description at equal luminance at equal luminance level. The degree of that effect decreased with a rise in luminace level. The brightness perception had high correlation with the visual clarity and no correlation with favorite sensation.

  • Colours are primarily composed of three properties - hue, brightness, and saturation, However, each property of colour is not independently visually recognised. Previous studies on saturation and brightness found that brightness was sensed differently depending on the degree of purity of the saturation; however, most of the psychophysical experiments used subtractive mixing. Therefore, fundamental research on colour perception based on display is needed. In this study, we conducted a psychophysical experiment and to investigate the visual characteristics of saturation and brightness based on a display with a self-luminous system. After selecting a certain brightness in the additive-mixed display, the experiment was conducted by adjusting the saturation of the main colours. Thus, by analysing the experimental results, we determined whether the results were the same as ones from subtractive mixing and whether the data are meaningful for the characteristics of colour perception. We also suggested future research directions.

  • When viewing images, the relative luminance of the surround has a profound impact on the apparent contrast of the image. The dark surround causes the image elements to appear lighter than those viewed in an illuminated surround. For this reason, it is worthwhile to briefly review the general results of brightness sealing under a various viewing condition. Two of the most often cited parers on the topic of brightness scaling are Stevens-stevens and Bartleson-Breneman's function. There are, however, significant differences between the perceptual functions for simple-field and complex-field viewing. In this paper, we research the relationship between Steven's power law and Bartleson-Breneman's function. We present an appropriate brightness perception function due to TV system viewing conditions. Highlight luminance peak and absolute brightness threshold value in various adaptation levels are obtained from the proposed brightness function . Also, the luminance value of black level to produce the same contrast ratio with variety of display highlight luminance peak is obtained from the proposed brightness function.

  • The purpose of the research was to examine the relative effect of binocular disparity and T-junction on the determination of object's belongingness in brightness perception when regular repeating structure was present in the stimuli. Using Howe's stimuli, the variation of White illusion stimuli, Experiment 1 found that object's belongingness was mainly determined by monocular information (T-junction as well as regular repeating structure) rather than by binocular disparity when both informations on belongingness were inconsistent. Experiment 2, using the stimuli employing only regular repeating structure and binocular disparity, found that object's belongingness was not determined by any single information. These results imply that when the regular repeating structure and binocular disparity are inconsistent on object's belongingness, T-junction plays an important role in the determination of the object's belongingness and that the brightness perception is affected by it.

  • Although design, color, and material are important elements in stage costumes, stage lightning also plays significant role in the presentation of stage costumes. Costumes color, material and perception can be significantly influenced by visual effects. Stage illumination can be arranged or managed so that colors are closely related to or enhanced or change the effects of costume colors on the runway or display at specific times. The results of this thesis are as follow; 1) Fabric tone, name, brightness, and chroma of colors were changed by the colors of stage lighting. 2) An achromatic color was changed to a chromatic color after being combined with colors of stage lighting. 3) Stage illuminations can make fabric, colors look similar to stage colors. 4) Plain satin silk fabric which reflects light shows high brightness and chroma after being influenced by stage lighting its shining effects and color changes were clear and apparent. 5) Velvet pile fabric which absorbs light shows low brightness and chroma after being influenced by stage lightning its shining effects and changes of colors were not clear and apparent. In conclusion, natural lights did not significantly influence fabric colors and perception, while artificial lights had wide range of effects on fabric colors and perception.

  • Kruithof demonstrated the preferred combination of illuminance levels and color temperatures. However, as Benett pointed out, difference of themal variables in such preference may be expected. The purpose of this study is to clarify the combined effects of lighting conditions(illuminance, color temperature), operative temperature on the human physiological and psychological responses. In order to observe operative temperature change in preference of color temperatures for three illumination levels, three subjects were exposed to two different conditions of color temperatures of 2,850K, 4,200K and 6,850K combined with operative temperatures(OT) of $25{\sim}31^{\circ}C$ at 100~1000lx. Thermal sensation vote and comfortable sensation vote, brightness perception vote were reported in each experiment conditions. The following results were obtained : 1) When illuminace level was at 100lx in operative temperatures of OT $20^{\circ}C$, $25^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, Color temperature affect not themal sensation but Warm-cool sensation. 2) Operative temperatures affect not brightness perception vote but visual comfort sensation vote, satisfactive sensation vote, warm-cool sensation vote and themal sensation vote.
