  • Between July and October 2011, radio-tracking was used to analyze the characteristics of home ranges and day roosts of Myotis aurascens by using 3 individuals (male: 2, female: 1). Bat capturing was conducted at a bridge and a nearby forest in Ulju-gun, Ulsan-si. We attached radio transmitters (0.32 g) to the bats and monitored them by using a radio receiver with a Yagi antenna. Home-range analysis of M. aurascens by using 100% minimum convex polygon (MCP) and 95% MCP showed an average of 106.5 ha and 89.3 ha, respectively, and 50% kernel home range (KHR) showed an average of 8.4 ha. Home range overlap of the 3 bats was observed at the bridge and at nearby water bodies as the core areas, and the size of the home range overlap was 7.3 ha by 100% MCP, 5.9 ha by 95% MCP, and 1.6 ha by 50% KHR. The home range for each bat consisted of the main foraging sites, and the types of foraging sites were similar. M. aurascens-01(M-01) used the bridge and nearby water bodies as the nightly main core areas, M. aurascens-02(M-02) used rice fields and water bodies adjacent to the forest as core areas, and M. aurascens-03(M-03) used water bodies and resident areas as core areas. Although rice fields and resident sites represented the core areas of the home ranges of M-02 and M-03, habitat use was the highest near water bodies as the core area for all the 3 bats. The types of day roosts in this study were a wooden house, canopies of a broad-leaved woodland, and banks of rice fields. The roosts in the wooden house and canopies of the broad-leaved woodland were located within the forest, and the roost in the banks of rice fields was also adjacent to the forest. Our results revealed that the main home range and foraging sites of M. aurascens were located near water bodies as the core area, and forests and places adjacent to the forests were used as day roosts.

  • In order to provide the basic information for the water quality modeling, the water pollution indicators of Sin stream and Keumho river flowing through Taegu city were measured, and the Periodical variations of these indicators were studied under the condition of stagnating for 19 days. For this experiment, three sampling sites(Sungpook bridge, Mutae bridge and Gangchang bridge) were selected. Sungpook bridge is located most down the Sin stream, Mutae bridge and Gangchang bridge are located on the lower Keumho river. The results were as follows. 1. The values of water pollution indicators measured at Mutae bridge were pH 8.7, TSS 51mg/1, TS 383mg/1, Cl- 60.68mg/1, turbidity 32FTU, DO 8.58mg/1, oxygen deficit 2.02mg/1, COD 16.32mg/1, organic carbon 13.60mg/1. 2. At Gangchang bridge located down more than Mutae bridge, the values of these indicators were pH 8.0, TSS 26mg/1, TS 737mg/1, Cl- 90.59mg/1, turbidity 37FTU,DO 3.49mg/1, oxygen deficit 7.11mg/1, COD 28.02mg/1, organic carbon 14.28mg/1. 3. At Sungpook bridge, the values of these indicators were pH 8.3, TSS 145mg/1, TS 344mg/1, Cl- 32.51mg/1, turbidity 60FTU, DO 6.53mg/1, oxygen deficit 4.07mg/1, COD 43.79mg/1, organic carbon 11.03mg/1. 4. At Mutae bridge and Sungpook bridge of which initial DOs were high, DOs have decreased under the condition of stagnating for 7 days and increased after that time. On the contrary, at Gangchang bridge of which oxygen deficit was very high(7.11mg/l), DO have increased under the condition of stagnating for 13 days and decreased after that time 5. All the samples showed the quick decrease of CODs and organic carbons under the condition of stagnating for 19 days. Nevertheless, at Sungpook bridge ·of which initial COD was yeW high(43.79mg/1), the value of COD measured at the last day of experiment was still high(21.35mg/1) because of a large quantity of reducing inorganic matters. 6. All the samples didn't show the distinct decrease of turbidities because of a large quantity of nonbiodegradable inorganic solids.

  • Recently, the implementation of unmanned and automated technologies has been actively considered as a solution to reduce safety accidents in industrial sites. However, bridge construction sites are recognized as a more challenging area for research and development compared to other industries due to the complexity of the site, such as weather and terrain, and the fact that the work is not repetitive or standardized. In this paper, a formwork system for unmanned and automated construction of bridge piers, which are considered high-risk work environments due to tasks such as rebar assembly, concrete pouring, and formwork dismantling and assembly at high altitudes, was developed. To achieve this, the formwork was equipped with motorized spindles and an automated lifting system to replace the manual dismantling and assembly process. Additionally, manipulators were installed on the upper work platform to replace workers in tasks such as rebar assembly and concrete pouring. To verify the proposed technology, we aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of the automated formwork system for unmanned pier construction through an assembly test.

  • The aquatic quality of the Naktong river after two or three months in June, 1991 with phenol spillage from a electrical factory in Kumi was investigated. The samples were collected at six sites of the Naktong river basin and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. Phenol was not detected from all water samples. Turbidity was very much increased to the down stream in the Naktong river. The BOD and COD values exceeded the 2nd grade(3mg/l) of the Korean standard quality of Environmenal Water Act at the all sampling sites of the Naktong river. Especially, the value of COD at Kaejin (12.5mg/l) was poorly classified as to the 5th grade of water class for the environmental quality standards. Organophosphorous pesticides such as parathion, malathion, fenitrothion and diazinon were investigated but not detected. Diazinon was only detected at the Ilsan bridge(1.42ppb), Okkye stream(6.95ppb), Waekwan bridge(0.32ppb), Gangjung reservior(0.13ppb), Kaejin (0.05ppb). Of the carbamates such as carbanyl, isoprocarb and cabofuran, the carbofuran was detected all sites except tap water, and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. The content of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Hg were not exceeding for drinking water standards at the all sampling region, but only mecury was detected from Okkye stream(0.018ppb) and Kaejin (0.09ppb). In the regions of Kachang and Kongsan lakes, the content of heavy meatals were lower than that of reservior of Naktong river.

  • Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is a powerful tool for addressing various practical problems and it has been extensively applied in areas of water resources. In this study, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were developed for flood forecasting at specific locations on the Han River. The Partial Mutual Information (PMI) technique was used to select input variables for ANNs that are neither over-specified nor under-specified while adequately describing the underlying input-output relationships. Historical observations including discharges at the Paldang Dam, flows from tributaries, water levels at the Paldang Bridge, Banpo Bridge, Hangang Bridge, and Junryu gauge station, and time derivatives of the observed water levels were considered as input candidates. Lagged variables from current time t to the previous five hours were assumed to be sufficient in this study. A three-layer neural network with one hidden layer was used and the neural network was optimized by selecting the optimal number of hidden neurons given the selected inputs. Given an ANN architecture, the weights and biases of the network were determined in the model training. The use of PMI-based input variable selection and optimized ANNs for different sites were proven to successfully predict water levels during flood periods.

  • In this research, eight waterproofing membranes were selected from commercial market and the tensile adhesive characteristics of the waterproofing system (WPS) on concrete bridge deck were investigated in view of various factor in asphalt pavement. Tensile adhesive strength (TAS) test of different asphalt pavement types showed that TAS of WPS under SMA (Stone Mastic Asphalt) pavement was greater than that under dense asphalt pavement. Tensile adhesive strength (TAS) of sheet membranes was improved as the compaction temperature of asphalt concrete increase, but TAS of liquid membranes were not. TAS of sheet membranes after wheel tracking test were in the order of the sites under wheel path (UWP), before wheel tracking (BWT) and nearby wheel path (NWP), Since TAS of the same WPS of UWP was higher than TAS of BWT, wheel loading had function of pressing WPS resulting in higher adhesive strength, But liquid membranes were variable on types, The feature of detached interface after T AS test showed that sheet types were all detached in between deck concrete and WPS, and liquid types were detached in between asphalt pavement and WPS,

  • The EPS construction method-one kind of the load reducing methods-utilizes the EPS blocks, ultra-light materials whose unit weight is about 1/100 of soils and has been applied to many soft ground sites. It needed 3,000 days to get the 90% degree of the consolidation for the case of 12m high soil embankments on the 30m thick soft clayey foundations. The N value of SPT at this deposit was less than 5. The pack drain was installed to promote the radial consolidations. Although staged embankments were planned, designers failed to get a sufficient stability of the foundation ground. Therefore, the EPS fill method was selected to reduce the load and the construction period. EPS blocks(D-20 model) replaced the upper part of the soil embankments. These complex embankments reduced the ground settlement and the construction period. The possibility of lateral movements of the bridge abutments was checked and the design scheme was reviewed.

  • A suspension bridge with long span is distinguished by aesthetic point of view, but it is difficult to analyze the structural behaviors due to its geometric nonlinear characteristics. Futhermore, because the chance of design such special bridges is very rare, the assumption of initial dimensions of geometrical shapes and structural sections may be much difficult also. In this paper, the brief data base on the important structural dimensions of suspension bridges is constructed after the informations on existing suspension bridges are collected and classified from various texts and internet web sites. Therefore this data base may be utilized very easily by the designers who tries to design such bridges in the preliminary design step. Also the static geometric nonlinear analysis program is added to assist the designer in simple decision of safety check for assumed dimensions.

  • Fiber-reinforced composite(FRC) was developed as a structural component for dental appliances such as prosthodontic framework. FRC provides the potential for fabrication of a metal-free, excellent esthetic prostheses. It has demonstrated success as a result of its simple fabrication, natural colour, and marginal integrity, and fracture resistance of veneering composite resin and the FRC material. Although it has lots of merits, clinical and objective data are insufficient. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the fracture strength and the marginal fitness of fiber reinforced composite bridge in the posterior region for clinical application. Sixteen bridges of each group. $Targis/Vectris^{(R)}$, $Sculpture-Fibrekor^{(R)}$, and In-Ceram, were fabricated. All specimens were cemented with Panavia 21 to the master dies. Strength evaluation was accomplished by a universal testing machine (Instron). The marginal fitness was measured by using the stereoscope (${\times}50$). The results were as follows. : 1. The fracture strength according to the materials was significantly decreased in order In-Ceram($238.81{\pm}82$), Targis Vectris($176.25{\pm}18.93$), Sculpture-Fibrekor($120.35{\pm}20.08$) bridges. 2. FRC resin bridges were not completely fractured, while In-Ceram bridges were completely fractured in the pontic joint. 3. The marginal accuracy was significantly decreased in order Targis/Vectris ($60.71{\mu}m$), Sculpture-Fibrekor($73.10{\mu}m$) In-ceram Bridge ($83.81{\mu}m$). 4. The fitness of occlusal sites had a lower value than the marginal sites(P<0.001), and the marginal gaps of inner site of the pontic were greater than that of outer sites of the pontic. Fiber reinforced composite bridges are new, esthetic prosthesis and can be clinically used in anterior regions and short span bridges. However, caution must be exercised when extrapolating laboratory data to the clinical situation because there are no long term clinical data regarding the overall success of the FRC.

  • The zooplankton community dynamics and grazing experiments was evaluated along a 40 km section of the lower Seomjin river system. Zooplankton was sampled twice a month from January 2005 to June 2006 at three sites (River mouth; RKO, Seomjin bridge: RK12 and Gurae bridge: RK36) in the main river channel. During the study period, the values of most limnological parameters in the three sites were fairly similar, except for conductivity. Annual variation of conductivity in River mouth and Seomjin bridge was more dramatic than which of the other site. There were statistically significant spatial and seasonal differences in zooplankton abundance (ANOVA, P<0.01). Total abundance of major zooplankton groups at both stations was much higher than in Gurae bridge. Among the macrozooplankton, cladocerans abundance was negligible in study sites during study periods. Community filtering rates (CFRs) for phytoplankton and bacteria varied from 0 to 50 mL $L^{-1}\;D^{-1}$ and from 0 to 45 mL $L^{-1}\;D^{-1}$, respectively. The spatial variation of CFRs for phytoplankton was significant (ANOVA, P<0.05). The CFRs of copepods for phytoplankton and bacteria was much higher than that of cladocerans at study sites. Total zooplankton filtering rates on bacteria were slightly lower than filtering rates on phytoplankton. The CFRs of microzooplankton (MICZ) for bacteria were much higher than for macrozooplankton (MACZ) at all sites. Considering the total zooplankton community, MICZ generally were more important than MACZ as grazers of bacteria and phytoplankton in freshwater zone, while MACZ were more important than MICZ as grazers of phytoplankton in brackish zone.
