Orthotropic decks composed of deck plate, ribs, cross beams and wearing surface are frequently used in industry to span long distances due to their light structures and load carrying capacities. As a result they are broadly preferred in industry and there are a lot of bridges of this type exist in the world. Nevertheless, some of them cannot sustain the anticipated service life and damages in form of cracks develop in steel components and wearing surface. Main reason to these damages is seen as the repetitive wheel loads, namely the fatigue loading. Solutions to this problem could be divided into two categories: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative solutions may be new design methodologies or innovative materials, whereas quantitative solution should be arranging dimensions of deck structure in order to resist wheel loads till the end of service life. Wearing surface on deck plate plays a very important role to avoid or mitigate these damages, since it disperses the load coming on deck structure and increases the bending stiffness of deck plate by forming a composite structure together with it. In this study the effect of Elastic moduli, Poisson ratio and thickness of wearing surface on the stresses emerged in steel deck and wearing surface itself is investigated using a FE-model developed to analyze orthotropic steel bridges.

Structural analysis models to develop live load distribution factors of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge should have the precision of the analysis results as well as modeling simplicity. This is due to the numerous frequency of structural analysis needed while developing live load distribution factors. In this study, an appropriate structural analysis model is selected by comparing previous researchs studies and models used in practical design. Also, the influence by the flexural stiffness of barrier and diaphragm on the live load distribution had been analyzed through comparing the numerical analysis and experimental tests. As a result, the model that the eccentric girder and the barrier and diaphragm are connected to the deck plate was appropriate in satisfying both accuracy and simplicity for structural analysis of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge. However, the barrier was analyzed to have insignificant influence on the live load distribution in spite of its variation of stiffness. The eccentric diaphragm showed little influence at 25% or higher of flexural stiffness. From the results, a model that the girder is rigidly connected to the deck plate in consideration of the eccentricity, the barrier is ignored and the whole section of diaphragm is supposed to be valid without eccentricity is decided as the most appropriate structural model to develop the live load distribution factors of simply supported prestressed concrete I-girder bridge in this study.

Probabilistic Risk Assessment considering statistically random variables is performed for the preliminary design of a Cable Stayed Bridge, which is Prestressed Concrete Bridge consisted of cable and plate girders, based on the method of Working Stress Design and Strength Design. Component reliabilities of cables and girders have been evaluated using the response surface of the design variables at the selected critical sections based on the maximum shear, positive and negative moment locations. Response Surface Method (RSM) is successfully applied for reliability analyses for this relatively small probability of failure of the complex structure, which is hard to obtain through Monte-Carlo Simulations. or through First Order Second Moment Method that can not easily calculate the derivative terms of implicit limit state functions. For the analysis of system reliability, parallel resistance system consisting of cables and plate girder is changed into series connection system and the result of system reliability of total structure is presented. As a system reliability, the upper and lower probabilities of failure for the structural system have been evaluated and compared with the suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes. The suggested prediction method for the combination of failure modes reveals the unexpected combinations of element failures in significantly reduced time and efforts compared with the previous permutation method or system reliability analysis method, which calculates upper and lower bound failure probabilities.

Bridge deck is directly influenced by environment and vehicle load, it is easily damaged so that it requires an appropriate repair and retrofit. Therefore, developing a bridge deck with high durability is necessary in order to minimize the maintenance of bridge deck and use it to its design life. In this study, static test was carried out to evaluate a fatigue capacity of steel-concrete composite deck, which was newly developed by supplementing problems of existing reinforced concrete deck. Based on results from the static test, fatigue load was decided, and fatigue test was conducted under the constant amplitude repeated load. From the fatigue tests, the S-N curve regarding principle structural details of composite deck was made, and characteristics of fatigue behavior was estimated by comparing and evaluating it with fatigue design criteria. In addition, fatigue design guideline was presented. As a result, it is found that each structural details of composite deck proposed by this study, such as upper flange of corrugated steel plate and middle section of it, shear connector and lower flange of corrugated steel plate, is satisfying the fatigue strength.

Installing Continuous Welded Rail (CWR) is one of the economical ways to resolve the challenges of noise, vibration, and the open-deck steel railway bridge impact, and the SSF method using the interlocking sleeper fastener has recently been developed. In this study, the method employed for determining the optimum vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad installed under the bridge sleeper, which is utilized to adjust the rail height and absorb shock when the train passes when the interlocking sleeper fastener is applied, is presented. To determine the optimal vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad, related existing design codes are reviewed, and, running safety, ride comfort, track safety, and bridge vibration according to the change in the vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad are estimated via flexible multi-body dynamic analysis,. The flexible multi-body dynamic analysis is performed using commercial programs ABAQUS and VI-Rail. The numerical analysis is conducted using the bridge model for a 30m-long plate girder bridge, and the response is calculated when passing ITX Saemaeul and KTX vehicles and freight wagon when the vertical stiffness of the sleeper pad is altered from 7.5 kN/mm to 240 kN/mm. The optimum stiffness of the sleeper pad is calculated as 200 kN/mm under the conditions of the track components applied to the numerical analysis.

Cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges are divided into three cross sections of non-composite, partially composite, and fully composite sections, according to their composite characteristics. The Korean provision for the partially and fully composite sections specifies general usage of the stud of shear connectors, whereas the one for the non-composite section specifies empirical usage of slab anchors. However, the actual behavior of the cross sections of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors is close not to the non-composite action, but to the partially composite action. Therefore analytical and experimental studies on partial composites of steel-plate girder bridges using slab anchors are performed in this study. Intial stiffness of the slab anchor is obtained by the experimental study for the first time, and the composite characteristic of simple-span and two-span continuous steel-plate girder bridges is investigated by the finite element analyses for the second time. Based on the obtained initial stiffness, the reduction effect of tensile stresses in the concrete-slab on the intermediate support of the continuous bridge is also considered herein.

Innovative prestressed steel plate girders were presented in this study. Hot-rolled H beams were loaded first, then relatively high-strengthsteel plates were welded on the top and bottom flanges of preloaded H beams. Finally, high prestressed plate (HiPP) girder was manufactured by simply releasing prestresses of rolled beams. To verify prestress distributions induced in this girder, the experimental study was conducted and some guidelines to manufacture these girders effectively were addressed. In addition, methods to determine the allowable bending stress of HiPP girders and to check welding stresses were addressed for design of temporary bridges. The efficiency and effectiveness of the present girder were demonstrated through design examples of temporary bridges adapting the prestress-induced girder or the plate girder of the same section without prestresses. As a result, it has been found to be possible that the span length of HiPP girders for temporary bridges is longer than that of girders without prestresses.

In this paper, Used on the bridge and ship, investigate the physical relationship of aluminium plate girders(A6082-T6) considering the marine environment. Plate girder will experience the patch loading such as moving load, surcharge in the product life cycle. The ultimate strength of aluminum plate girders subjected to these loads applied multiple numerical model and performed the elasto-plastic large deflection series analysis and was proposed the predicted formula for regression analysis. The predicted formula was shown by the relationship of ultimate strength and slenderness. If the slenderness is low(0-2.3), it causes a 9 % error, and If the slenderness is higher(2.3-4.0), it causes a 1-2 % error. Therefore, the propriety of proposed prediction formular was found to be assess rationally.

In this study, in order to design a wedge-type anchor that can hold an wide carbon plate with a width of 100 mm or more that can be used in a bridge structure, the mechanical behaviors are evaluated based on the main design variables such as the angle of the wedge and the coefficient of friction between the guide and the wedge. The stress state of the carbon plate was calculated by numerical analysis method for each design variable, and the performance of the anchor in the critical state was evaluated according to the failure criteria for composite material, and the optimal design specifications of the anchor were determined based on numerical results. The performance of the optimally designed anchor was verified through actual experiments, and the results of this study are considered to be useful for the optimal design of the CFRP plate anchor to reinforce large structures.
This study analyzed the characteristics of four kinds of bridge rubber pads and suggested a method of determining the stiffness and the damping ratio of the pads. The stiffness of rubber pads can be estimated by a direct static test and a dynamic test indirectly. This study used both methods to determine the pad's stiffness. The damping ratio of pads can be obtained using the dynamic test and the damping ratio of polyurethane rubber pads was estimated to aproximate that of natural and chloroprene rubber pads. The polyurethane rubber pads are harder than natural and chloroprene rubber pads and thus carry larger load bearing capacity. In addition, they showed higher stiffness with the same shape factor than the others and thus are more available for bridge bearings.Although natural and chloroprene rubber pads are elongated to large deformation in the horizontal direction due to vertical loads, polyurethane rubber pads almost do not generate horizontal deformation due to vertical loads regardless of the thickness and hardness of the pads. Therefore, they do not need reinforced plate to restrict horizontal deformation.
