It is not a simple task to optimize a cable stayed bridge, because it involves, in addition to the section properties, number and arrangement of cables, initial tension forces of cables, and type and height of the tower as design variables. This study deals with an optimization problem of cable stayed bridges considering initial cable forces, section properties of the girder and the tower, and coordinates of the tower. In order to avoid difficulties in dealing with numerous variables which interact mutually, separate design spaces are adopted for initial cable forces, section properties, and coordinates, respectively. Strain energy stored in the structure is used as the object function in the design of the initial cable forces, while weight of the structure is used in the design of section and coordinates. Upper and lower limits of the initial forces, allowable stresses including the effect of buckling, and lower limit of the sectional area are considered as constraints. The proposed method is applied to a fan type bridge and a harp type bridge. It is believed through comparison of the results to the previous results in the literature that the proposed method renders rational design values. It is also shown that the coordinate optimization, which is usually deleted in the optimization process, results in additional saving of materials.

In this study, an automated cable non-destructive testing(NDT) system was developed to monitor the steel cables that are a core component of cable-stayed bridges. The magnetic flux leakage(MFL) method, which is suitable for ferromagnetic continuum structures and has been verified in previous studies, was applied to the cable inspection. A multi-channel MFL sensor head was fabricated using hall sensors and permanent magnets. A wheel-based cable climbing robot was fabricated to improve the accessibility to the cables, and operating software was developed to monitor the MFL-based NDT research and control the climbing robot. Remote data transmission and robot control were realized by applying wireless LAN communication. Finally, the developed element techniques were integrated into an MFL-based cable NDT system, and the field applicability of this system was verified through a field test at Seohae Bridge, which is a typical cable-stayed bridge currently in operation.

Stay cable has a strong axial rigidity due to large initial tension and, on the other hand, it has a weak laterally flexural rigidity. Wind loads or traffic loads cause the cables to vibrate significantly and affect the mechanical properties and the performance of cables of cable-stayed bridge (CSB). Therefore, the development of vibration reduction design is an urgent task to control the vibration vulnerable long-span bridges. As Friction damper (FD) shows to reduce the amplitude and duration time of vibration of cable of CSB from measured date in field test, friction damper can be considered that it is effective device significantly to reduce the amplitude and duration time in vibration of cable of CSB under traffic load, wind load and so on. Vibration characteristics of cable can change according to manufacturing method and type of established form. Nevertheless, analysis method in this study can present the design of friction damper for vibration reduction of cable of cable-stayed bridge from now on.

The paper proposes rating equations for main components such as girders, towers and cables in cable-stayed bridges. Load rating equations for girders and towers are proposed using stress and stability equations and load rating equation for cables is presented. A moving load analysis is performed and distribution types of live loads are determined for the cases of a maximum axial tensile force, a maximum axial compressive force, a maximum positive and a negative moment for each component. The Dolsan Grand bridge is used to verify a validity of proposed equations, The conventional rating equation overestimates rating factors of girders and towers in the Dolsan Grand bridge, whereas proposed rating equations properly reflect the axial-flexural interaction behavior of girders and towers in cable-stayed bridges.

The nonlinearity of a cable-stayed bridge results in the large displacement of main girder due to a long span, the large axial forces reduce the catenary action of cables and the flexural stiffness. Therefore, the static and dynamic behavior of pylon for a cable-stayed bridge plays an important role in determining its safety. This study was performed to find the behavior of pylon of cable-stayed bridge for the first-order analysis considering of axial load only and for the second-order analysis considering of lateral deflection due to axial load. The axial force and moment values of pylon were different from the results of the first-order analysis and second-order analysis according to pylon shape and cross beam stiffness when the pylon was subjected to earthquake and wind loads. In the second-order analysis, comparing the numerical values of the member forces for the dynamic analysis, types 3 and 4 (A type) were relatively more advantageons types than types 1 and 2 (H type). Considering the stability for pylon of cable-stayed bridge (whole structural system), types 3 and 4 (A type) with pre-buckling of girder were proper types than types 1 and 2 (H type) with buckling of pylon.

Internationally the load carrying capacity of bridges is decreasing due to material deterioration while at the same time increasing live loads mean that they are often exposed to stresses for which they were not designed. However there are limited resources available to ensure that these bridges are fit for purpose, meaning that new approaches to bridge maintenance are required that optimize both their service lives as well as maintenance costs. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide a tool that could support such an optimized maintenance program. In many situations WSNs have advantages over conventional wired monitoring systems in terms of installation time and cost. In order to evaluate the potential of these systems two WSNs were installed starting in July 2007 on the Humber Bridge and on a nearby approach bridge. As part of a corrosion prevention strategy, a relative humidity and temperature monitoring system was installed in the north anchorage chambers of the main suspension bridge where the main cables of the bridge are anchored into the foundation. This system allows the Bridgemaster to check whether the maximum relative humidity threshold, above which corrosion of the steel wires might occur, is not crossed. A second WSN which monitors aspects of deterioration on a reinforced concrete bridge located on the approach to the main suspension bridge was also installed. Though both systems have provided useful data to the owners, there are still challenges that must be overcome in terms of monitoring corrosion of steel, measuring live loading and data management before WSNs can become an effective tool for bridge managers.
This paper deals with the lateral - torsional motion of bridges provided with external cables acting as dampers under the action of horizontal dynamic loads or of walking human crowd loads. A three dimensional analysis is performed for the solution of the bridge models. The theoretical formulation is based on a continuum approach, which has been widely used in the literature to analyze bridges. The resulting equations of the uncoupled motion are solved using the Laplace Transformation, while the case of the coupled motion is solved through the use of the potential energy. Finally, characteristic examples are presented and useful results are obtained.

A previous study evaluated the seismic response of typical multi-span simply supported (MSSS) and multi-span continuous (MSC) steel-girder bridges in the central and southeastern United States. The results showed that the bridges were vulnerable to damage resulting from impact between decks, and large ductility demands on nonductile columns. Furthermore, fixed and expansion bearings were likely to fail during strong ground motion. In this paper, several retrofit measures to improve the seismic performance of typical multi-span simply supported and multi-span continuous steel girder bridges are evaluated, including the use of elastomeric bearings, lead-rubber bearings, and restrainer cables. It is determined that lead-rubber bearings are the most effective retrofit measure for reducing the seismic vulnerability of typical bridges. While isolation provided by elastomeric bearings limits the forces into the columns, the added flexibility results in pounding between decks in the MSSS steel-girder bridge. Restrainer cables, which are becoming a common retrofit measure, are only moderately effective in reducing the seismic vulnerability of MSSS and MSC steel girder bridges.
Optimization in distribution of stay cable forces is one of the most difficult aspects in the design of cable-stayed bridges. This article attempts to examine tension force influence on structural behavior of cable-stayed bridges. For the examination, finite element modeling using nonlinear static and nonlinear modal analyses was completed and compared to structural experimental results. Variables analyzed in this parametric study were: 1) Number of stay cables; 2) Tension of the stay cables, and 3) Stay cable pattern - harp and semi-fan patterns. Though the findings from the analysis are limited to the tested models, the study gives insight on the structural behavior of actual cable stayed bridges.
In this study, stochastic responses of a cable-stayed bridge subjected to the spatially varying earthquake ground motion are investigated by the finite element method taking into account soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The considered bridge in the analysis is Quincy Bay-view Bridge built on the Mississippi River in between 1983-1987 in Illinois, USA. The bridge is composed of two H-shaped concrete towers, double plane fan type cables and a composite concrete-steel girder deck. In order to determine the stochastic response of the bridge, a two-dimensional lumped masses model is considered. Incoherence, wave-passage and site response effects are taken into account for the spatially varying earthquake ground motion. Depending on variation in the earthquake motion, the response values of the cable-stayed bridge supported on firm, medium and soft foundation soil are obtained, separately. The effects of SSI on the stochastic response of the cable-stayed bridge are also investigated including foundation as a rigidly capped vertical pile groups. In this approach, piles closely grouped together beneath the towers are viewed as a single equivalent upright beam. The soil-pile interaction is linearly idealized as an upright beam on Winkler foundation model which is commonly used to study the response of single piles. A sufficient number of springs on the beam should be used along the length of the piles. The springs near the surface are usually the most important to characterize the response of the piles surrounded by the soil; thus a closer spacing may be used in that region. However, in generally springs are evenly spaced at about half the diameter of the pile. The results of the stochastic analysis with and without the SSI are compared each other while the bridge is under the sway of the spatially varying earthquake ground motion. Specifically, in case of rigid towers and soft soil condition, it is pointed out that the SSI should be significantly taken into account for the design of such bridges.
