Bridges are ones of fundamental facilities for roads which become social overhead capital facilities and they are designed to get safety in their life cycles. However as time passes, bridge can be damaged by changes of external force and traffic environments. Therefore, a bridge should be repaired and maintained for extending its life cycle. The working load on a bridge is one of the most important factors for safety, it should be calculated accurately. The most important load among working loads is live load by a vehicle. Thus, the travel characteristics and weight of vehicle can be useful for bridge maintenance if they were estimated with high reliability. In this study, a B-WIM system in which the bridge is used for a scale have been developed for measuring the vehicle loads without the vehicle stop. The vehicle loads can be estimated by the developed B-WIM system with the reaction responses from the supporting points. The algorithm of developed B-WIM system have been verified by numerical analysis.

Overload vehicles operate damage to road, bridge, and then increasing in maintenance and repair cost because structures are reduced durability. The existing regulation systems have many problems and need coping measure. Therefore, this paper organized Ubiquitous sensor network system for development of intelligent auto overload vehicle regulation system about high speed vehicles, also axial load WIM sensor was selected by indoor experiment through wireless protocol. And we examined possibility U-load auto overload vehicle regulation system through experiment of the transmission and reception distance. If this system will apply to road and bridge, might be effective for economy and convenience through establishment of U-IT system. And high speed vehicle that was amalgamate IT technology and existing overload regulation problems, also tested wireless sensor for USN organization. This experiment aim to organize system interface for user through perfection man-less, wireless system of Internal/External Network from high speed WIN sensor with USN organization. Accordingly, it is necessary experimentation through Test Bed for constitution External network and application of actually regulations using WCDMA/HSDPA.
Traffic load and volume is one of the most important physical quantities for bridge safety evaluation and maintenance strategies formulation. This paper aims to conduct the statistical analysis of traffic volume information and the multimodal modeling of gross vehicle weight (GVW) based on the monitoring data obtained from the weigh-in-motion (WIM) system instrumented on the arch Jiubao Bridge located in Hangzhou, China. A genetic algorithm (GA)-based mixture parameter estimation approach is developed for derivation of the unknown mixture parameters in mixed distribution models. The statistical analysis of one-year WIM data is firstly performed according to the vehicle type, single axle weight, and GVW. The probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the GVW data of selected vehicle types are then formulated by use of three kinds of finite mixed distributions (normal, lognormal and Weibull). The mixture parameters are determined by use of the proposed GA-based method. The results indicate that the stochastic properties of the GVW data acquired from the field-instrumented WIM sensors are effectively characterized by the method of finite mixture distributions in conjunction with the proposed GA-based mixture parameter identification algorithm. Moreover, it is revealed that the Weibull mixture distribution is relatively superior in modeling of the WIM data on the basis of the calculated Akaike's information criterion (AIC) values.
The purpose of this study is to develop the calibration method for temperature effects to improve the accuracy of the Weigh-In-Motion(WIM) system for collecting long-term truck weight data. WIM system was installed at a location where the truck traffic volume is high and weight data has been collected from January 2010. In this study, as a calibration measure, the first axle weight of Truck Type 10, the semi tractor-trailer is used based on the fact that the first axle weight is relatively constant, independent of the cargo weight. From this fact, calibration equations are developed from the relationship between the axle weight and the temperature(daily mean, maximum and minimum). Analysis on calibrated weight data shows adequacy of the proposed calibration method. Results of this study can be used to improve the accuracy of the WIM system and to carry out more rational design of pavement and bridge structures.

In this paper, high speed fiber optic sensor weigh-in motion (WIM) system is proposed. Bragg gratings which have several advantages such as good reproducibility and good multiplicity compare to other optical fiber sensors are used for the system. Fabry-Perot filter for the signal process, which cannot be used in the high speed measurement because of the limitation in fast operation of PZT, is excluded. A new signal processing system which employs bandwidth filter is proposed and bridge type new sensor package design is also proposed. Design of the mold supporter is modified to round shape and then supporting points do not change. The data from the fiber sensors show identical and linear behavior to the axle weight. The proposed fiber optic WIM system is tested in the laboratory and experimented with actual trucks. The new concept of calibration is introduced and calculated by the experiments. The calibrated weight data show good approximations to real axial weights regardless the velocities of the truck.

The analysis of vehicular loads reflecting the domestic traffic circumstances is necessary for the development of adequate design live load models in the analysis and design of cable-supported bridges or the development of fatigue load models to predict the remaining lifespan of the bridges. This study intends to develop an ANN(artificial neural network)-based Bridge WIM system and Influence line-based Bridge WIM system for obtaining information concerning the loads conditions of vehicles crossing bridge structures by exploiting the signals measured by strain gauges installed at the bottom surface of the bridge superstructure. This study relies on experimental data corresponding to the travelling of hundreds of random vehicles rather than on theoretical data generated through numerical simulations to secure data sets for the training and test of the ANN. In addition, data acquired from 3 types of vehicles weighed statically at measurement station and then crossing the bridge repeatedly are also exploited to examine the accuracy of the trained ANN. The results obtained through the proposed ANN-based analysis method, the influence line analysis method considering the local behavior of the bridge are compared for an example cable-stayed bridge. In view of the results related to the cable-stayed bridge, the cross beam ANN analysis method appears to provide more remarkable load analysis results than the cross beam influence line method.
The purpose of this study is to calculate and propose rational multi-lane loading factors for bridge design considering the probability of simultaneous truck passing in adjacent lanes and real truck weights. The probability of simultaneous truck passing is calculated by analyzing video image taken at various locations in highways and national roads. Weigh-In-Motion system data at two locations are used, which is combined with the probability of multiple presence to calculate the multi-lane loading factors for typical 2 lane and 5 lane bridges. Statistical properties of multi-lane loading factors are also calculated assuming that locations for video images and WIM data represent the overall traffic condition in the country. Results are compared with various design codes in the world and they show that the values are between the current Korea Bridge Design Code and AASHTO LRFD specification or Eurocode and are similar to Canadian Code.
Long term measurement data on the bridge response caused by moving loads are fundamental ingredient to the development or improvement of the new bridge design. In addition, proper establishment of the systematic analysis and diagnosis together with the maintenance system become the essential procedure to the effective repair/reinforcement/retrofit of not only the high speed but also the conventional railway bridges. Therefore, the real time health monitoring system on the important railway bridges should be enhancing the proper maintenance of the structures. The main objective of this study is, therefore, to develop a monitoring device including Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) function and the emphasis is place on the easy and economic installation of the developed system in the field condition.

In this study, truck weight data and load effects of single truck on bridges are analyzed for development of new vehicular load model of the reliability-based bridge design code. Rational load model and statistical properties of loads are important for developing reliability-based design code. In this study, truck weight data collected at four locations are used as well as data from four locations in other studies. Truck weight data are collected from WIM or BWIM system, which are known to give reliable data. Typical truck types, dimensions and axle weight distribution are determined. Probability distributions of upper 20% total truck weight are assumed as Extreme Type I and 100 years maximum truck weights are estimated by linear regression on the probability paper. The load effects of trucks having estimated maximum weights are analyzed for span length from 10 m to 200 m.

In this paper, new vehicular load model is developed for reliability-based bridge design code. Rational load model and statistical properties of loads are important for developing reliability-based design code. In the previous paper, truck weight data collected at eight locations using WIM or BWIM system are analyzed to calculate the maximum truck weights for specified bridge lifetime. Probability distributions of upper 20% total truck weight are assumed as Extreme Type I (Gumbel Distribution) and 100 years maximum weights are estimated by linear regression. In this study, effects of multiple presence of trucks are analyzed. Probability of multiple presence of trucks are estimated and corresponding multiple truck weights are calculated using the same probability distribution function as in the previous paper. New vehicular live load model are proposed for span length from 10 m to 200 m. New model is compared with current Korean model and various load models of other countries.
