Purpose: An increase in the breastfeeding rate has been followed by an increase in the number of mothers seeking help in relactation. We investigated the factors related to successful relactation by assessing the impact of medications, supplementer, consultations, and family support. Methods: A retrospective review of the medical records and telephone survey of mothers who had visited the relactation clinic were conducted from January 2004 to April 2007. Results: Data from 84 mothers were analyzed to identify the factors associated with success in relactation. Seventy-five percent of the mothers succeeded in obtaining exclusive breastfeeding. Success in relactation was associated with informed referral from medical personnel, the use of galactogogues, and family support. Conclusion: This study provides new and noteworthy insights concerning relactation. This highlights the need to inform the mothers about the data of relactation, to use galactogogues, and to have their families involved for psychological support and endurance during visits to the relactation clinic.
The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to explore the effect of aromatherapy massage on the mood, the milk ejection reflex, and the immunoglobulin A of the breast milk of mothers who gave birth through a Cesarean section delivery. Twenty mothers who had Cesarean section were selected as an experimental group, and twenty-two were in the control group. Lavander and Rosemary oil mixed with Jojova carrier oil was used to massage the back, both axillar and breasts. Aromatherapy massage was done once a day for 20 minutes by the researcher. Each session consisted of 4 minutes for warm-up, 14 minutes for massage and 2 minutes for closure. The levels of IgA within the breast milk was analyzed by an immunoturbidimeter assay (Cobas INTEGRA, Roche, Swiss) before and after aromatherapy massage. Mood and milk ejection reflex were measured by self-reports at the same time. The data were analyzed using SPSS 7.5 and the hypotheses were tested by ANCOVA and the Pearson coefficient correlation. The results were as follows : 1) Score of mood increased significantly after the use of aromatherapy massage. 2) Score of milk ejection reflex increased significantly after the use of aromatherapy massage. 3) Level of IgA of breast milk did not change significantly after the use of aromatherapy massage.4) After the use of aromatherapy massage, there wasn't any correlation among mood, milk ejection reflex, and level of IgA of breast milk. In conclusion, the results suggest that aromatherapy massage is an effective nursing intervention to enhance the mood and the milk ejection reflex and to increase the rate of breastfeeding in the breastfeeding mothers under stresses like a Cesarean section.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of breast-feeding education program on the promotion of mothers's feeding compliance during the 4 months after childbirth. A nonequivalent control group posttest design was used. Eighty-nine pregnant women at their 32 more weeks of gestation receiving antenatal care at the Chonnam University Hospital Obstetrics Clinic were assigned to the experimental group. Control group was ninety-nine pregnant women over 32wks of gestation receiving antenatal care at the Kwangju Christianity Hospital Obstetric Clinic during the same period. Breast-feeding education program was introduced to the experimental group from antepartal visit to 4 months after childbirth. Data were collected primarily via telephone interview on the 7th day, the end of 1 month and the 4 months after childbirth respectively. The results showed that 1) the frequency of breast-feeding continuation promoting behaviors was higher in the experimental group than in the control group. 2) The rates of mothers' compliance during the 4 months after childbirth in the experimental group demonstrated a significant difference ; much higher rate of mothers' compliance than control group. Conclusively, the breast-feeding education program increase the rate of mothers' compliance and duration of breast-feeding.
Background & purpose Since the 1970's the rate of breast-feeding has decreased significantly. The Korean National Institute of Health reported that the rate of breastfeeding was 68.9% in 1982 and 14.1% in 1997. There are many influencing factors including: the lack of education and information on breast feeding, lack of faith in breast feeding, increment of the rate of working, lack of encouragement by supporters in difficult situations, and nurses' low level of knowledge about breast feeding. Such a lack of knowledge and support of breast-feeding at home by family members create another dilemma to the problem of breast-feeding. If problems arise and family members are unable to provide assistance due to the deficiency of knowledge, mothers show a tendency to abandon breast-feeding. The purpose of this research is to find out the rate of breast-feeding practice by time sequence of 1 week, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after birth and influencing factors on breast-feeding practice centered on the postpartal women who were 3discharged from one hospital, which is located in Seoul and provides simple breast-feeding education and continuous postnatal telephone consultation. Methodology The subjects of this research were 54 women who gave birth in a hospital located in Seoul from 1 March 2000 to 31 April 2000. After birth the subjects were educated individually about breast-feeding and telephone consultations were conducted. On the 1st week, 6th week, and 12th week, the subjects were surveyed about their breast-feeding practice rates and methods by telephone. Results 1) Complete breast-feeding rate: Within one week after birth, the subjects showed 64.2% complete breast-feeding rate. Within 6 weeks, 39.6%, and 12 weeks, 34.1%. 2) Partial breast-feeding rate: Within one week after birth, the subjects showed 32.1% partial breast-feeding rate. Within 6 weeks, 39.6%, and 12 weeks 15.1%. 3) Complete bottle-feeding rate Within one week after birth, the subjects showed 1.9% complete bottle-feeding rate. Within 6 weeks of giving birth 15.1%, and 12 weeks 17.0%. These results show that individual education about breast-feeding and continuous postnatal telephone consultation influenced on the practice of breast-feeding. On considering the reality of the hospital situation in which nurses could not operate education program due to the work-load, it is necessary to find out selectively those mothers who are unable to breast feed and provide education individually and continuous support by telephone follow up. Futhermore, the active role of lactation nurse specialist and their efficient management of breast-feeding for the successful practice is required.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an antepartum-postpartum breast-feeding program titled "Breastfeeding Empowerment Program" and to measure the effects of this program on breast-feeding empowerment and the rate of exclusive breast-feeding. Methods: The study design was a nonequivalent control group design with repeated measures. Results: The scores for breast-feeding empowerment of the experimental group (EG) were higher than those of the control group (CG) at week 1, 4, 8, 12. The rates for exclusive breast-feeding of the experimental group were also higher than those of the control group: 86.4% in the EG and 40.9% in the CG at week 1; 100% vs 42.9% at week 4; 86.4% vs 38.1% at week 8; 95.5% vs 38.1% at week 12; 94.7% vs 31.6% at 6 months; 89.5% vs 26.3% at 12 months. Conclusion: The study provided evidence that raising consciousness and strengthening mother's will and skills for exclusive breast-feeding helps them to achieve successful breast-feeding by themselves. In addition mothers need to be empowered to breastfeed starting before delivery and continuing after delivery. This approach could make long-term exclusive breast-feeding successful.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the condition, recognition of breast feeding of 273 nurses. Method: Data was collected using a structured questionnaire form April to June 2007. The subjects were 273 nurses in Kyunggido. The data analysis was done with descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test procedures using SPSS/WIN 12.0 PC. Result: There are 23.9% of child day care center, 5.2% of rest room for women, 16.8% of breast feeding room in workplace. Rate of breast-feeding practice was 78.4% of nurses. The reasons why they could not perform the breast-feeding include mother's job(45.4%), lacking breast milk(25.8%). The characteristics of nurses found to be related breast-feeding include age, number of employers. Conclusion: The results showed that the rest supports of the work environment was insufficient to perform breast-feeding in the workplace. These results suggest that nursing intervention for employed mother's breast-feeding practice behavior promotion should focus on characteristics influencing factors on workplace. Also, efficient breast-feeding education program for employed mothers should be developed by continuous qualitative researches based on breast-feeding experiences of employed mothers.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of an educational program on parturient women's feeding behavior One hundred and twenty seven mothers who delivered in one general hospital in Seoul participated in the study, 66 mothers of whom were assigned to experimental group and 61, to control group. The data collection was done from April 20 to June 30 in 1997 and the educational program was applied to the experimental group on the third postpartum day and telephone calls were made on the fourth and the twelfth postpartum week to investigate feeding behavior after discharge. The collected data were analyzed by means of Chi-square test and descriptive statistics. The results are as follows : 1. Breast-feeding rate of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group($x^2$=6.578, p=.043). 2. Background variables affecting feeding behavior were age and feeding plan(age: $x^2$=8.660, p=.070, feeding plan : $x^2$=25.762, p=.000). 3. The insufficient milk supply was the main cause of discontinuing breast-feeding and others were mother's job, baby's jaundice and diarrhea, baby's refusal to suck breastmilk. In conclusion, the breast-feeding educational program which was applied in this study is effective in the promotion of breast-feeding.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of atopic dermatitis in infants is increasing worldwide. However, the nutrient intake status of infants with atopic dermatitis has not been studied properly. This study was conducted to compare the nutrient intake status of infants in the weaning period with atopic dermatitis by feeding type. MATERIALS/METHODS: Feeding types, nutrient intake status and growth status of 98 infants with atopic dermatitis from age 6 to 12 months were investigated. Feeding types were surveyed using questionnaires, and daily intakes were recorded by mothers using the 24-hour recall method. Growth and iron status were also measured. RESULTS: The result showed that breastfed infants consumed less energy and 13 nutrients compared to formula-fed or mixed-fed infants (P < 0.001). The breastfed group showed a significantly lower intake rate to the Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans than the other two groups (P < 0.001). In addition, they consumed less than 75% of the recommended intakes in all nutrients, except for protein and vitamin A, and in particular, iron intake was very low, showing just 18.7% of the recommended intake. There was no significant difference in growth by feeding type, but breastfed infants showed a significantly higher rate of iron deficiency anemia (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Continuous management programs should be prepared for breastfed infants with atopic dermatitis, who are in a period when rapid growth takes place and proper nutrient intake is essential.
Fertility has been declined since 1966 (see Table 1). This fertility reduction was duely caused by age at first marriage, induced abortion and contraceptive practice which has been largely increased in recent years. Although tbe proximate determinant such as induced abortion, age at marriage and breastfeeding can and do have an effect on fertility, the principal cause of the reduction in fertility in Korea during the fertility transition can be supported by correlation between level of fertility and contraceptive prevalence (See Fig. 4). Taking a regression equation between fertility (TER. Y) and prevalence level (X), the total fertility rate in 1984 was estimated as 1.9 and 2.1 based on lenear and expotential function shown as follow; $Y_1$=5.709-0.0549 X and $Y_2$_______80________ 1+e2.433+0.017X ($R^2$=O. 93) ($R^2$=0. 96) Where $Y_1$ and $Y_2$ denote total fertility rates obtained through two equations respectivelly. The peak of contraceptive prevalence was assumdd as 80 percent which is almost upper limit in human society. On the other hand, an observed value of 1984 fertility level obtained from five month period shows 2.1 which is coincident with logistic fitting after the adjustment of response error assumed around 10 to 20 percent, At any rate, fertility of Korean women will have been reached replacement level (2.1) by 1985.Thus policy for family planning program must be reviewed toward the direction of integrated approach particularly with MCH program inasmuch as fertility in Korea has already shown population replacement level that require more good quality of service in family planning and their There must be an advanced level of fertility in Korea because wide use of contraception and induced life abortion and age at marriage will effect modern fertility which shows up and down trend between 2.1 and 1.5 in general.
