  • In order to investigate the degree of grain shedding of red rices collected in Korea, breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of 269 varieties; 82 Korean and 100 foreign red rices and 87 Korean cultivars including 26 native varieties, 30 Japonica-Indica hybrids and 31 Japonica type varieties, were measured at harvest time. Also, histological characteristics of abscission region between spikelet and pedicel were observed. The breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of both Korean and foreign red rices were weaker than those of Japonica-Indica hybrids which were known as easily shedding varieties in Korea. Abscission layers were observed in the majority of Korean red rices except for 5 varieties, and those of all varieties belonging to both long grain types and 'Sare's were cracked completely at harvest time, while those of round grain types were not cracked except one variety. The breaking tensile and breaking bending strengths of the tested varieties having cracked abscission layer were weaker than those of non-cracked ones. Both strengths of breaking tensile and breaking bending were positively correlated with diameter of supporting zone and thickness of sclerenchyma tissue surrounding central vascular tissue of suporting zone at 0.1% significant level, respectively.

  • The accuracy impact of using high-order Boussinesq-type model as compared to the typical order model is examined in this paper. The multi-layer model developed by Lynett and Liu(2004a) is used for simulating of wave breaking over a shelf region. The nonlinearity of the waves tested, ${k_0}{A_0}$, ranges from 0.029 to 0.180. The overall agreement between the two-layer model and the hydraulic experiments are quite good. The one-layer model overshoals the wave near the breakpoint, while the two-layer model shoals at a rate more consistent with the experimental data.

  • In this study, wave breakings over a shelf region are investigated under irregular wave conditions through laboratory experiments in a wave flume. Numerical simulations based on the Boussinesq-type equations are also conducted. The characteristics of breaking waves such as significant wave height, crest and trough heights, the mean water level and the stable wave height are obtained by analyzing laboratory measurements in detail. Obtained results are compared with those of the Boussinesq-type equations model. A very reasonable agreements is observed. The broken waves over a horizontal bottom asymptotically approach a stable wave height($H_{stable}$). In this study, the relative stable wave height is found as $H_{stable}/h{\fallingdotseq}0.56$ for irregular wave.

  • The present paper is Part 2 of three-part paper for an experimental study on breaking waves generated by a submerged cylinder. Measurements of velocity and head loss profiles at the wakes of cylinder and breaker as well as the turbulent intensities in breaking region were made to elucidate the viscous aspects of breaking waves. Their mutual correlation is also investigated. It is found that the head loss profile is an excellent indicator of the strength and extent of breaker. Very high turbulent intensities measured at and just downstream of the breaker indicate the consequence of energy transfer of wave breaking into turbulence.

  • Wave breaking phenomenon near the fore body of a ship is numerically simulated. The ship advance with uniform velocity in calm water. For the simulation, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation are adopted as governing equations. The simulation is carried out in staggered variable mesh system with finite difference method. Marker and Cell(MAC) method and Marker-Density method are employed to track the free surface. Body boundary conditions are satisfied with the adoption of porosity method and no-slip condition on the hull surface. The ship model has a wedge type fore-body, and the computational domain is an appropriate region around the fore-body. The computation results are compared with some experimental results. Also the difference of the free surface tracking methods are discussed.

  • Energy recovery in the regenerative region is very important when SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) is used in traction drive. This is because that to reduce energy toss during mechanical breaking and/or to have a high efficiency drive during breaking. To control excitation voltage in motor operation and regenerative voltage in the generator operation in the SRM, multi-level voltage control is effective. This paper proposes multi-level inverter which is useful for motoring and regenerative operation in SRM. The proposed method is verified by experiment.

  • Axially compressed circular cylinders repeat symmetry-breaking bifurcation in the postbuckling region. There exist stable equilibria with all symmetry broken in the buckled configuration, and the minimum postbuckling strength is attained at the deep bottom of closely spaced equilibrium branches. The load level corresponding to such postbuckling stable solutions is usually much lower than the initial buckling load and may serve as a strength limit in shell stability design. The primary concern in the present paper is to compute these possible postbuckling stable solutions at the deep bottom of the postbuckling region. Two computational approaches are used for this purpose. One is the application of individual procedures in computational bifurcation theory. Path-tracing, pinpointing bifurcation points and (local) branch-switching are all applied to follow carefully the postbuckling branches with the decreasing load in order to attain the target at the bottom of the postbuckling region. The buckled shell configuration loses its symmetry stepwise after each (local) branch-switching procedure. The other is to introduce the idea of path jumping (namely, generalized global branch-switching) with static imperfection. The static response of the cylinder under two-parameter loading is computed to enable a direct access to postbuckling equilibria from the prebuckling state. In the numerical example of an elastic perfect circular cylinder, stable postbuckling solutions are computed in these two approaches. It is demonstrated that a direct path jump from the undeformed state to postbuckling stable equilibria is possible for an appropriate choice of static perturbations.

  • We consider the following two questions mainly in this study. First one is how the free surface hayes affect the lift of a shallowly submerged moving body. For this matte., we reinterpret the theoretical results of Kochin(1936), and point out that the high Froude number approximation is not always on the safer side. Second one is what sort of dimensionless parameters determine the occurrence of wave breaking behind a moving submerged body. Temporarily before getting a better answer, we propose that the two-parameter-plane, namely, the plane of the Froude number and the square root of the ratio of the submerged depth and the body length, may be used for predicting the possibility of wave breaking behind the submerged body. A region in the parameter plane is put forth as that of wave breaking, and the validity of this proposal is shown by its agreement with the existing experimental data of Parkin et al(1955) and those of Duncan(1983). Finally, linear and nonlinear numerical results are compared with the existing experimental data to see in what range of the parameters the linear and nonlinear theory case predict the wave field and the pressure on the body with reasonable accuracy. However, since the experimental data, which offer both the pressure and wave elevation for a submerged moving body, are very scarce, much cannot be attained through this comparative study. Hence, it is strongly recommended to carry out well planned experiments to get such data.

  • This study was carried out to examine the base temperature to flowering and the average days to flowering by accumulated hours of low temperature ($5.0^{\circ}C$) or changing temperature after bud breaking. Over-all, the prediction of flowering time in the commercial apple cultivars ('Fuji' and 'Tsugaru') and apple cultivars ('Chukwang', 'Gamhong', 'Hongan', 'Honggeum', 'Hongro', 'Hongso', 'Hwahong', 'Summer dream', 'Sunhong') bred in Korea at the Gunwi region for 4 years (from 2009 to 2012) was investigated. Also, this study estimated the flowering time when the air temperature of Gunwi region rises at $5.0^{\circ}C$ was investigated using the same data. The range of accumulated hours of low temperature (chilling requirement) was from 0 hour to 1,671 hours, and the range of high temperature (heat requirements) to flowering after low temperature treatment was from $5.0^{\circ}C$ to $29.0^{\circ}C$. The treatments of changing temperature after bud breaking were classified as constant temperature treatment (control) and $5.0{\sim}10.0^{\circ}C$ elevation or descent treatments. The results show that the average days to flowering was longer with shorter accumulated hours of low temperature, and the average days from bud breaking to flowering of 0 hour treatment was longer about 2~4 weeks than that of 1,335~1,503 hours treatments. In comparing to apple cultivars, the all cultivars were not flowered under $10.0^{\circ}C$ after bud breaking, and the cultivars with low chilling requirements needed low heat requirements for flowering. The average days to flowering of treatments that the air temperature after bud breaking was controlled about $15.0^{\circ}C$ was shorter about 1~3 weeks than that of treatments was controlled about $10.0^{\circ}C$. In the treatment of changing temperature after bud breaking, the average days from bud breaking to flowering of temperature elevation treatment was shorter than that of constant temperature treatment. By use of these results, the base temperature to flowering of main apple cultivars in Korea was seemed to $10.0^{\circ}C$, and if the air temperature of Gunwi region rises about $5.0^{\circ}C$ than that of current, the flowering time was estimated to be delayed by 1 week.

  • As the wave impinges on and overtops the structure, a large highly aerated region is created in front of the structure and water splashs on top of the structure. The broken wave in front of the structure and associated green water on top of the structure are highly aerated containing not only a large number of bubbles but also very large sizes of bubbles. In this paper, the velocity field of the highly aerated region and the splashing water on the top is measured using a modified PIV method incorporating the traditional PIV method with the shadowgraphy technigue by correlating the ' texture ' of the bubble images. The velocity fields of a plunging wave impacting on a structure in a two-dimensional wave flume is measured. It is found that the maximum fluid particle velocity in flout of the structure during the impinging process is about 1.5 times the phase speed of the wave, while the maximum horizontal velocity above the top is less than the phase speed, It is also found that the dam breaking solution does not work well in predicting the green water velocity.
