  • In this paper, we consider the routing and wavelength assignment problem in survivable WDM transport network without wavelength conversion. We assume the single-link failure and a path protection scheme in optical layer. When a physical network and a set of working paths are given, the problem is to select a link-disjoint protection path for each working path and assign a wavelength for each working and protection path. We give an integer programming formulation of the problem and propose an algorithm to solve it. Though the formulation has exponentially many variables, we solve the linear programming relaxation of it by using column generation technique. We devise a branch-and price algorithm to solve the column generation problem. After solving the linear programming relaxation, we apply a variable fixing procedure combined with the column generation to get an integral solution. We test the proposed algorithm on some randomly generated data and test results show that the algorithm gives very good solutions.

  • Analytical and numerical modeling of soft or problematic soils stabilized with lime and cement require a number of soil parameters which are usually obtained from expensive and time-consuming laboratory experiments. The high shear strength of lime and cement stabilized soils make it extremely difficult to obtain high quality laboratory data in some cases. In this study, an alternative method is proposed, which uses the unconfined compressive strength and estimating functions available in literature to evaluate the shear strength parameters of the treated materials. The estimated properties were applied in finite element model to determine which estimating function is more appropriate for lime and cement treated granular soils. The results show that at the mid-range strength of the stabilized soils, most of applied functions have a good compatibility with laboratory conditions. However, application of some functions at lower or higher strengths would lead to underestimation or overestimation of the unconfined compressive strength.

  • Seismic response of the concrete column covered by nanofiber reinforced polymer (NFRP) layer is investigated. The concrete column is studied in this paper. The column is modeled using sinusoidal shear deformation beam theory (SSDT). Mori-Tanaka model is used for obtaining the effective material properties of the NFRP layer considering agglomeration effects. Using the nonlinear strain-displacement relations, stress-strain relations and Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are derived. Harmonic differential quadrature method (HDQM) along with Newmark method is utilized to obtain the dynamic response of the structure. The effects of different parameters such as NFRP layer, geometrical parameters of column, volume fraction and agglomeration of nanofibers and boundary conditions on the dynamic response of the structure are shown. The results indicated that applied NFRP layer decreases the maximum dynamic displacement of the structure. In addition, using nanofibersas reinforcement leads a reduction in the maximum dynamic displacement of the structure.

  • Eight species of Sargassum subgenus Bactrophycus section Halochloa and Repentia were collected from the coasts of Korea: Sargassum coreanum J. Agardh, Sargassum sagamianum Yendo, Sargassum micracanthum (Kützing) Endlicher, Sargassum macrocarpum C. Agardh, Sargassum autumnale Yoshida, Sargassum siliquastrum (Mertens ex Turner) C. Agardh, Sargassum serratifolium (C. Agardh) C. Agardh, Sargassum yezoense (Yamada) Yoshida et Konno. These species were investigated on morphological variations and geographical distributions in Korea. The valuable taxonomic characters between similar species of these section were discussed with special reference to types of holdfasts, shape of main branch, leaves and vesicles.

  • This problem analyzed in this paper is to specify a schedule for thesis committee allowing maximum committee members' preference over thesis topics and meeting time-slots while satisfying other related scheduling requirements such as prohibiting simultaneous assignment of a committee member to more than one committee at a time. Two mathematical programming applroaches are presented to solve the thesis committee scheduling problem in a professional graduate school. They include LP-based branch-and-bound approach with network subproblems. Characterization of the problem is analyzed to develop an efficient solution algorithm. Implementation and computational experiments are also performed for real size problems on an IBM PC/AT to show the relative performance of the propsoed approaches along with an ordinary ILP solution approach.

  • This paper addresses the problem of resource scheduling in a grid computing environment. One of the main goals of grid computing is to share system resources among geographically dispersed users, and schedule resource requests in an efficient manner. Grid computing resources are distributed, heterogeneous, dynamic, and autonomous, which makes resource scheduling a complex problem. This paper proposes a new approach to resource scheduling in grid computing environments, the hierarchical stochastic Petri net (HSPN). The HSPN optimizes grid resource sharing, by categorizing resource requests in three layers, where each layer has special functions for receiving subtasks from, and delivering data to, the layer above or below. We compare the HSPN performance with the Min-min and Max-min resource scheduling algorithms. Our results show that the HSPN performs better than Max-min, but slightly underperforms Min-min.

  • Since resources of fossil fuels are limited, development of alternative energies is emphasized and research on new-regenerative energy is actively in progress worldwide. In present research, physical and chemical characteristics of mixed fuel are analyzed in detail for the different mixture rate of conventional and bio-diesel and ultrasonic irradiation time. Experimental setup consists of ultrasonic generator, vibrator, horn, and reflector. Various physical and chemical characteristics of fuel are investigated for volumetric mixture rate of bio-diesel from 0 to 100%. As results, viscosity and surface tension is increased as mixture rate of bio-diesel is increased. Also, molecular splits and reunions are increased and decreased repeatedly after some period of time as ultrasonic energy irradiation time is increased. As conclusion of experiments, Olefin rate, Branch index, and Aromatic rate are influenced by ultrasonic irradiation time.

  • Androgen receptor (AR) is ligand-inducible nuclear hormone receptor which has been focused on key molecular target in growth and progression of prostate cancer. We synthesized a series of 4-aryl 2-substituted aniline-thiazole analogs and evaluated their anti-cancer activity in AR-dependent human prostate cancer LNCap cells. Among them, the compound 6 inhibited the tumor growth in LNCap-inoculated xenograft model.
