  • This report describes aspects of recent braced excavation constructed in built up areas where adjacent buildings or underground utilities are likely to be subjected to settlement and damages. Trends and choice of earth retaining structures for deep excavation are present, and some desigen and construction techniques are introduced in order to minimise possible adverse effects to the urban environment. Some problems in design and construction of braced excavation in urban area are closely examined and remedial measrures are proposed.

  • The bracing system using screw jack is not effective for the restraining of adjacent ground displacement. since the screw jack dose not induce sufficient preloading on struts. In order to protect excessive displacement of adjacent ground at braced excavation, new preloading jack was developed in the country. In this paper, the new preloading jack and the measurement results of the lateral displacement of braced wall at three deep excavation sites in Seoul city are introduced. The measurement results showed that the maximum displacements of braced wall are smaller than 0.15% of excavation depth, therefore the wall displacements can be minimized by preloading which is acted on bracing. If the bracing system with new preloading jack is used in braced excavation, it is effective for reducing the cost and period of construction.

  • Rapid industrialization and urbanization caused by the high economic growth of the country requires optimization of land usage as well as the expansion of underground space. Therefore the construction of large and deep basements is inevitable in built up areas where the braced excavation for earth retaining structures may create many problems such as settlement and damages of nearby buildings and underground utilities. In this work, some of major influential factors concerning the stability of braced excavation are investigated and the results are compared with the field observation results. The ground water table, applied strut forces, horezontal wall displacement, infilling materials in the rock joints were found to be the most critical factors influencing the stability of braced walls constructed in the layered ground. Magnituide and type of the wall deformation was closely related to the pattern of the surface settlement. The stability of braced walls are described in terms of strut forces.

  • Pre-loads could be imposed on the braced wall to prevent the horizontal displacements during the ground excavation adjacent to the existing tunnel. For this purpose, new pre-loading system through which large pre-loads could be applied to the braced wall was used in the model tests. Large scale model tests were performed in the real scale test pit which was 2.0 m in width and 6.0 m in hight and 4.0 m in length. Test ground was constructed by sand. Model tunnel in 1.2 m diameter was constructed before test ground excavation. Test ground was excavated adjacent to existing tunnel and was braced. To investigate the effect of pre-loading, tests without pre-load were also performed. During the ground excavation were the behavior of braced wall, test tunnel, and ground measured. Model tests were also numerically analysed and their results were compared to that of the real scale tests. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel was greatly enhanced when the horizontal displacements of braced wall was reduced by applying pre-load larger than the design load.

  • Ground excavation inevitably causes ground displacement of adjacent ground, and structures and facilities exposed to ground displacement may suffer various damages. Therefore, in order to minimize the damage and damage to adjacent structures and facilities caused by excavation, ground displacement (settlement and horizontal displacement) in the adjacent ground caused by excavation must first be predicted. There is many ground displacement information induced by general braced cut excavation, but the information is not enough for circular shaft excavation. This study aims to provide information on the estimation of ground settlement caused by circular shaft excavation through the case analysis of circular shafts and comparison with braced cut excavation. From this study, it was found that the use of the settlement criterion of braced cut excavation as the settlement management criterion for circular shaft excavation is a conservative approach in terms of safety. But when considering the economic aspect, it may result in overdesign of the wall and therefore, a more reasonable settlement criterion can be needed for circular shaft excavation.

  • This study aims to present a more reasonable control value than the exiting one by comparing and analyzing control values and field instrument8tion values of the whole excavation depth of the four case sites, using geometric averaging as a statistical method. The range of the study is confined to the horizontal displacement of braced excavation walls among a variety of items, prescribed in the control values by approximately of the allowable and design values, and by safety factors. As a result, it is desirable to revise 70, 90, and 100 percent of LEVEL I, II, and III, respectively. The horizontal displacement values of the allowable and design values approximations should change to 104, 133, and 148 percent of the allowable and design values, respectively. In addition, modifying the horizontal displacement control value of the braced excavation walls is not needed. The horizontal displacement value, presented in the control value as a safety factor, is now 1.19, as it has a slight difference from the present value.

  • For the deep excavation in urban area, the braced-cut method is mainly adopted. In this case, inadequate consideration of ground water level may result in wrong prediction of structural behavior. In this study, the effects of hydraulic interaction between wall and grout were investigated using the finite element method. The maximum stress in case of confined ground water condition is obtained at the final excavation stage in the range of 70~80% of excavation depth. The stress of impermeable case is about 50% larger than that of permeable case. When the relative permeabililty of wall-grout become smaller, the stress is getting bigger. And the stress tends to converge in case of 1/100 or less of the relative permeability.

  • MiStrut is a new method to establish structural stability in designing braced excavations by making a rigid connection between top-level steel beams and soldier beams. MiStrut has a function of working as a strut as well as supporting cover plates of top-level steel beams. The structural mechanism of MiStrut is supposed to reduce flexural deformation of soldier beams, which may lead to reduced lateral earth pressures behind excavation. In this research, for verification of the performance of MiStrut, shear-wave velocities of subsurface soil before and after excavation was compared. The rigid connection of main girder beams with soldir beams reduced shear-wave velocity by 67% and lateral earth pressures by 90%, which indicates that MiStrut is effective development in reducing lateral earth pressures on braced excavation.

  • In deep braced excavations, struts and walers play an essential role in the whole supporting system. For multi-level strut systems, accidental strut failure is possible. Once a single strut fails, it is possible for the loads carried from the previous failed strut to be transferred to the adjacent struts and therefore cause one or more struts to fail. Consequently, progressive collapse may occur and cause the whole excavation system to fail. One of the reasons for the Nicoll Highway Collapse was attributed to the failure of the struts and walers. Consequently, for the design of braced excavation systems in Singapore, one of the requirements by the building authorities is to perform one-strut failure analyses, in order to ensure that there is no progressive collapse when one strut was damaged due to a construction accident. Therefore, plane strain 2D and three-dimensional (3D) finite element analyses of one-strut failure of the braced excavation system were carried out in this study to investigate the effects of one-strut failure on the adjacent struts.

  • The use of strut preloading method is gradually increasing in braced excavations in Korea. And it is necessary to analyse the effects of strut preloading on the wall deflection, bending moment and strut axial force etc. In this study, by using the analysis method of beams on elasto-plastic foundations, parametric studies of correlation between preloading and earth retaining structures in sandy soils were peformed in strut preloading application. As results, about 50% of design strut load was effective as a preloading force in considering the displacement and member forces of structures. And at least the effective stiffness of strut should be over 25% of the ideal value in order to restrain the excessive increase of wall deflection and bending moments. In order to protect excessive movements in braced excavation, to preload the strut was rather effective way than to increase the stiffness of strut and braced wall, but the excessive axial force of strut should be checked simultaneously.
