Polyvoltine silkworm breeds/hybrids play an important role in tropical sericulture. In the process of synthesizing more potential polyvoltine hybrids(polyvoltine${\times}$bivoltine) of superior quantity and quality, the Andhra Pradesh State Sericulture Research and Development Institute (APSSRDI) has developed 8 promising polyvoltine breeding lines (SDMG2, APM16, APM15, APM14, APM5, RM2, APM3, APM13). In order to study their hybrid vigour and performance, these breeds were crossed with 4 potential bivoltine testers (SDD1, SDD2, SDD3, APS8), and 32 different hybrid combinations were prepared and evaluated for their mid parent heterosis (MPH) and better parent heterosis (BPH) of silk productivity. Since silk is the ultimate product required for commercial purpose, based on silk productivity and its heterosis, three superior polyvoltine hybrid combinations namely RM2${\times}$APS8 (24.3%), APM3${\times}$APS8 (12.4%) and APM15${\times}$SDD2 (10.8%) were adjudicated as potential heterotic hybrid combinations of superior silk yield and hence recommended for further large scale field trails and commercial exploitation.
This study was carried out to understand the immigration period, climatic conditions for mass immigration and bionomical characters ofthe brown pLanthopper(BPH) in Hae NamThe results are as follows ; (1) The Periods of first immigraion and mass immigration of BPH , were from the late June to early JuLy and from earlyto mid JuLy in HaeNam, that were faster about 15-30days than in inland of ChonnanThe climatic factors that related closely to mass immigration wereas follows ; temp.: $20{\;}~{\;}25^{\circ}C$, humidity : 86 ~ 95 % , wind direcion : SW, wind velocity: 1.0 ~ 2.9gm/sec. (2)The population of immigranted BPH was in the field much more overthe mountain near coast than other places . Biotype composition showed that biotype I was on the decrease and biotype II, III were on the increase (3)The bionomical characters were variable, for climatic conditions, that egg stage, nymphal stage and adult stafe of immigranted BPHwere 9-12days, 13-16days and 12-36days respectively, that hatchability(%) and emergence rate ( % ) were higher than 80%. The adult Longevity in female and macropterous BPH showed Longerthan that of male and brachypterous respectively. (4) The distance of nymphs and brachypterous adults move by walking was within 16cm over the water surface, by hopping was within 20cm horizontally.
The brown planthopper, N. lugens (Stal), has become a serious pest of rice in tropical Asia during the last decade. At high pest density, its feeding damage causes 'hopperburn' or complete wilting and drying of the rice plant. It also transmits grassy and ragged stunt virus diseases. The estimated losses caused by the pest in tropical Asia exceed $US\$300$ millions. While cultivation of resistant rice varieties has proved to be highly effective against the pest, their long-term stability is threatened because of the evolution of prolific biotypes which can destroy these varieties. At present, identification of biotypes is based principally on the differential reactions of host rice varieties to the pest and on host-mediated behavioral and physiological responses of the pest. Recent findings of morphological differences in adult rostrum, legs, and antennae, body parts that possess receptors for host plant location and discrimination, and cytological differences in N. lugens populations maintained as stock cultures strongly complement other biotype studies. So far, three N. lugens biotypes have been identified in the Philippines. Biotype I can survive on and damage varieties that do not carry and genes for resistance, while Biotype 2 survives on resistant varieties carrying Bph 1 gene and Biotype 3 on varieties carrying gene bph 2. However, none of these biotypes can survive on varieties with genes Bph 3 or bph 4. Several varieties which are resistant in the Philippines are susceptible in India and Sri Lanka as the South Asian biotypes of N. lugens are more virulent than Southeast Asian biotypes. To monitor the pest biotypes in different geographical regions and to identify new sources of resistance, an International Brown Planthopper Nursery has been established in many cooperating countries. The evolution of biotypes is an exceedingly complex process which is governed by the interactions of genetic and biological factors of the pest populations and the genetic makeup of the cultivated varieties. While the strategy for sequential release of varieties with major resistance genes has been fairly successful so far, the monegenic resistance of these varieties makes them vulnerable to the development of the pest biotypes. Therefore, present breeding endeavors envisage utilizing both major and minor resistance genes for effective control of the pest.
Cure behavior of an epoxy resin was investigated at different cure temperatures (110, 120, 130, 140, and 150 $^{\circ}C$) and cure times in the presence of 2 wt% of an N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) cationic catalyst by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The glass transition temperature ( $T_{g}$) and chemical conversion (x) at the different temperatures were determined from DSC thermograms. The $T_{g}$ and x vs. In time data were superposed up to $T_{g}$ = 10$0^{\circ}C$ and x = 0.70 by shifting horizontally at a reference temperature of $T_{g}$ = 13$0^{\circ}C$. It is interesting that the $T_{g}$ and x of the superposed data increase rather slowly in the early stage of cure and rapidly thereafter. Therefore, the increase of the $T_{g}$ and x can be divided into two regions; $R_{I}$= -18.4(= $T_{go}$ ) ~5$^{\circ}C$ and $R_{II}$ = 5 ~ 10$0^{\circ}C$ in $T_{g}$, and $R_{I}$ : 0~0.24 and $R_{II}$ : 0.24~0.70 in x. The $R_{I}$ is closely related to the initiation reactions between BPH and epoxy and between hydroxy group and epoxy in this epoxy/catalyst system. From the kinetic analysis of the $T_{g}$-shift, activation energy was 12.5 kcal/mol. The relationship between $T_{g}$ and x was also considered. The gelation and vitrification times for different cure temperatures were obtained from DMA curves.urves. DMA curves.urves.

Objectives: Yongdamsagan-tang (YST) and Paljung-san (PJS) in traditional medicine and finasteride in modern medicine are used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). In recent, the use of combination herbal remedies with conventional drugs has been increasing. Therefore, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of these drugs to treat BPH and the influence of herbal formulas on finasteride metabolism. Methods: The inhibitory effects of the herbal formulas and finasteride on the production of inflammatory mediators and cytokines were determined in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated RAW 264.7 cells. Additionally, the influence of herbal formulas on activities of human drug metabolizing enzymes (DMEs) was assessed using human microsomal enzymes. Results: We observed that YST, PJS and finasteride inhibited the production of nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in RAW 264.7 cells. The half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of YST on PGE2 production was calculated to be below 25 ㎍/mL. YST inhibited the activity of uridine diphosphate-glucuronosyltransterase (UGT) 1A4 with an IC50 value of 49.35 ㎍/mL. The activities of cytochrome P450 (CYP) 1A2, CYP2B6, CYP2C19, CYP3A4, and UGT1A1 were inhibited by PJS (IC50 < 100 ㎍/mL, each). Although PJS and YST inhibited the activities of CYP3A4 and UGT1A4, respectively, these formulas may not influence the metabolism of finasteride because the IC50 values of herbal formulas on DMEs are too high to affect metabolism. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the combination of finasteride and YST or PJS might not influence their drug metabolism and that the drugs may have synergistic effects against BPH.
Studies were conducted to investigate the incidense of insect pests in transplanted and direct seeded paddy fields in southern region of Korea. Population dencities of the rice green leafhopper (RGLH: Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) and rice leaffolder (RLF: Cnaphalocroch medinalh Guenee) were higher in machine transplanted than in direct seeded, but the brown planthopper (BPH: Nilaparvata lugens Stal) and smaller brown planthopper (SBPH: Laodelphax striatellus Fallen) were abundant in direct seeded. However, no significant difference was found between machine transplanted and direct seeded fields in the incidense of rice stem borer (RSB: Chilo suppressalis Walker), whiteback planthopper (WBPH: Sogatella furcifera Horvath), and rice stem magot (RSM: C'hlorops oryzae Matsumura). Occurrence of rice key pests were affected more by transplanting time than other cultural practices. Later transplanting induced higher populations of BPH, WBPH, SBPH, RGLH. However, RSB and RLF caused higher damage in earlier transplanted paddy field.

Difficulties in treating chronic prostatitis cause physical pain and mental problems not only for the treating doctor, but also for the patient. Accordingly, the device of the present research was developed to help patients suffering from prostate symptoms due to the vibration effect of shock wave energy caused by thermal and mechanical interaction of the external shock wave. The purpose of this study is to provide an effective treatment means for prostatitis and BPH(Benign prostatic hyperplasia) by devising an extracorporeal shockwave therapy device that effectively applies the heat and vibration effects of concentrated energy by MCU and spiral coil module.
This study was conducted to know the effects of temperature conditions on the growth and oviposition of the brown planthopper(BPH), Nilaparvata lugens $St{\aa}l$. Results obtained were to predict the timing of the BPH control by measuring population dynamics of the BPH in response to temperature fluctuations upon migration of the insects in paddy fields. Developmental and ovipositional rates under constant and alternating temperature conditions were observed in a plant growth cabinet. Hatchabilities of eggs of the BPH were the highest at $25^{\circ}C$ and were decreased below or above the optimum temperature. Egg periods were the shortest at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and prolonged with decreasing temperature, but retarded at higher temperature above $30^{\circ}C$. Adult emergence rates were the highest at $27.5^{\circ}C$ and reduced with decreasing temperature, and no adult emerged at $32.5^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. Developmental period of nymph was the shortest at both $27.5^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, but extended with decreasing temperature. Female longevity was increased with decreasing temperature and the male longevity was the shortest at $27.5^{\circ}C$. Preoviposition period was the shortest at $32.5^{\circ}C$, but prolonged with decreasing temperature. It was about 6.5 times longer at $17.5^{\circ}C$ than that at $32.5^{\circ}C$. Number of eggs oviposited per female was the greatest at $25^{\circ}C$, but decreased at the temperature below or above the optimum. Under the same total effective day-degrees, hatchabilty at the alternating temperature was about 10% higher than that at the constant temperature but egg period at the alternating temperature was nearly identical as that at the constant. Under the $22^{\circ}C$ condition, emergence rate was about 8% higher at the alternating temperature than that at the constant, however, at the $28^{\circ}C$, the rate was about 8% higher at the constant than that at the alternating. Nymphal period was about $4{\sim}6$ days longer at the alternating temperature than that at the constant. Under the same total effective day-degrees in adult stage, both longevity and oviposition period were longer at alternating temperature than those at the constant. Number of eggs oviposited per female was also higher at the alternating. Longevities of females reared under $28^{\circ}C$ of constant temperature was the longest no matter what temperatures they were exposed after the emergence. This result seems to be indicating that female longevity is greatly influenced by the temperature to which they were exposed durings immature stages. Preoviposition period was affected by the temperature exposed during the nympal and adult stage whereas the number of eggs oviposited was affected by the temperature during the adult stage only. Based on the results from this study, the developmental threshold temperatures seem to be $14.12^{\circ}C$ for eggs, $14.76^{\circ}C$ for nymphs, $9.62^{\circ}C$ for adults, and $15.95^{\circ}C$ for preoviposition period. Estimated values of the total effective temperature for completing each stage were 141.25 day-degrees for eggs, 167.83 day-degrees for nymphs, 349.64 day-degrees for adults, and 58.60 day-degrees for preoviposition.
ABSTRACT Brown planthopper collection data by 151 light traps located throughout the southern part of Korean peninsula for 7 years from 1981 thru 1987 were analysed with each immigration wave in relation to daily weather charts when the immigration occurred, and summarized as below. 1) Most of the main immigration took place during the mid and late July, though there were some variations from year to year. 2) Number of the BPH collected at one time, and the number of the area where those immigrants where collected were increased when it occurred closer to the end of July. 3) Weather conditions when the immigration took place were divided into 4 types; (a) depression with stationary front passed over the central peninsula (A type, 12 times); (b) depression with stationary front passed over the southern sea (B type, 5 times); (c) stationary front passed over the central peninsula(C type, 7 times); (d) without depression and stationary front (D type, 2 times). 4) Whatever the types of the weather, those immigrations started to land from south-west part of the peninsula, and those numbers of immigrants were also grater at those south-western areas. 5) When common weather factors were counted from each weather chart of the days when thcse immigrations took place, presence of wind from south-west was 26 times, presence of stationary front was 24 times, and presence of depression was 17 times out of all 26 cases of immigration. 6) Therefore, it could be concluded that the immigration of the BPH into Korea is simply accompanied by the north$.$easterly flowing air currents, connected from south-east part of China through Korean peninsula. And other factors seem to be related with inducing their landing.anding.
$[Fe^{II}Fe^{III}BPLMP(OAc)_2](BPh_4)_2$ (1), a new model for the reduced form of the purple acid phosphatases, has been synthesized by using a dinucleating ligand, 2,6-bis[((2-pyridylmethyl)(6-methyl-2-pyridylmethyl)amino) methyl]-4-methylphenol (HBPLMP). Complex I has been characterized by X-ray diffraction method as having (μ-phenoxo)bis(acetato)diiron core. Complex 1 was crystallized in the monoclinic space group C2/c with the following cell parameters: a=41.620(6) Å, b=14.020(3) Å, c=27.007(4) Å, β=90.60(2)°, and Z=8. The iron centers in the complex 1 are ordered as indicated by the difference in the Fe-O bond lengths which match well with typical $Fe^{III}-O\; and\; Fe^{II}-O$ bond lengths. Complex 1 has been studied by electronic spectral, NMR, EPR, SQUID, and electochemical methods. Complex 1 exhibits strong bands at 592 nm, 1380 nm in $CH_3CN$ (ε = 1.0 × 103 , 3.0 × 102). These are assigned to $phenolate-to-Fe^{III}$ and intervalence charge-transfer transitions, respectively. Its NMR spectrum exhibits sharp isotropically shifted resonances, which number half of those expected for a valence-trapped species, indicating that electron transfer between $Fe^{II}\;and\;Fe^{III}$ centers is faster than NMR time scale. This complex undergoes quasireversible one-electron redox processes. The $Fe^{III}_2/Fe^{II}Fe^{III}\;and\;Fe^{II}Fe^{III}/Fe^{II}_2$ redox couples are at 0.655 and -0.085 V vs SCE, respectively. It has $K_{comp}=3.3{\times}10^{12}$ representing that BPLMP/bis(acetate) ligand combination stabilizes a mixed-valence $Fe^{II}Fe^{III}$ complex in the air. Complex 1 exhibits a broad EPR signal centered near g=1.55 which is a characteristic feature of the antiferromagnetically coupled high-spin $Fe^{II}Fe^{III}$ system $(S_{total}=1/2)$. This is consistent with the magnetic susceptibility study showing the weak antiferromagnetic coupling $(J= - 4.6\;cm^{-1},\; H= - 2JS_1{\cdot}S2)$ between $Fe^{II}\; and \;Fe^{III}$center.
