A Study on the Characteristics of Interior Elements of Frank Lloyd Wright's Residential Design (F. L. Wright의 주택특성과 실내디자인 요소분석에 관한 연구)

  • Frank Lloyd Wright, a master of the 20th Century Ar-chitecture, contributed tremendously in creating a wholly new form of American architecture called Prairie Style. His idea behind the development of the building structur-al system, organic relationships between inner and outer space, horizontal vertical lines, and idea of extending and expanding interior spaces came from nature. He had completed over 390 projects throughout his life and 90% of those projects were residential design. The most typical characteristic shared by many of his residential design was that each design element, whether it is functional or aesthetical, has close relationship to or-ganic nature, human scale, theoretical floor plants, and maximum emphasis on horizontal lines in respect to na-ture. His concept of "flow of spaces" reformed common the-ory of room next to room in a enclosed space. His sense of "wall" was no longer the side of a box. Careful selec-tion of finishing materials, colors, and natural images en-hance the design as well. F.L. Wright was an artist, designer, and architect who believed the exterior space should have direct relationship to the interior space. His architectural philosophy was not only to design exterior of architecture but also to ful-fill his space through the careful development of interior elements such as furniture, and lighting fixture. Even the patterns for leaded glass windows were designed to have unified appearance from outside to inside of the house. The objective of this study was to analyze floor plans, spatial organizations, and interior design elements of the houses which represent the best of F.L. Wright's design principles and philosophy behind Prairie Style.   • According to the accident statistics of 2006, it can be recognized that drivers' characteristics and driving behaviors are the most causational factors on the traffic accidents. At present, many recording tools such as digital speedometer or black box are distributed in the market to meet social requests of decreasing traffic accidents and increasing safe driving behaviors. However, it is also true that the system preventing any possible vehicle accidents in advance has not been developed. In this study, we developed critical value for deciding dangerous driving behaviors. The developed critical value could be used to contribute to safety driving management systematization and safety driving behaviors.

The Effect of Visual & Cognitive Information of Landing Height on Landing Strategy during Drop Landing (드롭랜딩 시 낙하높이에 대한 시각 및 인지 정보가 착지 전략에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of landing height information on landing strategy during a drop landing. Ten healthy male subjects(age: $22.1{\pm}1.9year$, height: $178.4{\pm}7.8cm$, mass: $75.3{\pm}9.4kg$) participated in this study. Each participant was asked to jump with both legs off a 40 cm high box on one of the three plates with different thickness (0 cm, 13 cm, 26 cm). In the first condition, subjects were given both cognitive and visual information about the jumping heights. In the second, they were given only cognitive information without visual one, and in the third, no information about the height was provided to subjects. (Only the data collected from the 40 cm height landing were analyzed and reported in the present study.) The results showed that landing strategies during a double-leg drop landing from 40 cm height were not significantly affected by visual and cognitive information blockages. Also, there were no statistically significant differences in landing strategies between the three conditions even though the mean differences attained in this study seemed to warrant further studies investigating the relationship between landing strategies and cognitive information.

The Effect Analysis of Postural Stability on the Inter-Segmental Spine Motion according to Types of Trunk Models in Drop Landing (드롭착지 동작 시 체간모델에 따른 척추분절운동이 자세안정성 해석에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the inter-segmental trunk motion during which multi-segmental movements of the spinal column was designed to interpret the effect of segmentation on the total measured spine motion. Also it analyzed the relative motion at three types of the spine models in drop landing. A secondary goal was to determine the intrinsic algorithmic errors of spine motion and the usefulness of such an approach as a tool to assess spinal motions. College students in the soccer team were selected the ten males with no history of spine symptoms or injuries. Each subject was given a fifteen minute adaptation period of drop landing on the 30cm height box. Inter-segmental spine motion were collected Vicon Motion Capture System (250 Hz) and synchronized with GRF data (1000 Hz). The result shows that Model III has a more increased range of motion (ROM) than Model I and Model II. And the Lagrange energy has significant difference of at E3 and E4 (p<.05). This study can be concluded that there are differences in the three models of algorithm during the phase of load absorption. Especially, Model III shows proper spine motion for the inter-segmental joint motion with the interaction effects using the seven segments. Model III shows more proper observed values about dynamic equilibrium than Model I & Model II. The findings have shown that the dynamic stability strategy of Model III toward multi-directional spinal motion supports for better function of the inter-segmental motor-control than the Model I and Model II.

MODAL TESTING AND MODEL UPDATING OF A REAL SCALE NUCLEAR FUEL ROD

  • In this paper, modal testing and finite element modeling results to identify the modal parameters of a nuclear fuel rod as well as its cladding tube are discussed. A vertically standing full-size cladding tube and a fuel rod with lead pellets were used in the modal testing. As excessive flow-induced vibration causes a failure in fuel rods, such as fretting wear, the vibration level of fuel rods should be low enough to prevent failure of these components. Because vibration amplitude can be estimated based on the modal parameters, the dynamic characteristics must be determined during the design process. Therefore, finite element models are developed based on the test results. The effect of a lumped mass attached to a cladding tube model was identified during the finite element model optimization process. Unlike a cladding tube model, the density of a fuel rod with pellets cannot be determined in a straightforward manner because pellets do not move in the same phase with the cladding tube motion. The density of a fuel rod with lead pellets was determined by comparing natural frequency ratio between the cladding tube and the rod. Thus, an improved fuel rod finite element model was developed based on the updated cladding tube model and an estimated fuel rod density considering the lead pellets. It is shown that the entire pellet mass does not contribute to the fuel rod dynamics; rather, they are only partially responsible for the fuel rod dynamic behavior.

Cushioning Efficiency Evaluation by using the New Determination of Cushioning Curve in Cushioning Packaging Material Design for Agricultural Products (농산물 포장용 지류완충재의 새로운 완충곡선 구현을 통한 완충성능 평가)

  • From the time the product is manufactured until it is carried and ultimately used, the product is subjected to some form of handling and transportations. During this process, the product can be subjected to many potential hazards. One of them is the damage caused by shocks. In order to design a product-package system to protect the product, the peak acceleration or G force to the product that causes damage needs to be determined. When a corrugated fiberboard box loaded with products is dropped onto the ground, part of the energy acquired due to the action of the gravitational acceleration during the free fall is dissipated in the product and the package in various ways. The shock absorbing characteristics of the packaging cushion materials are presented as a family of cushion curves in which curves showing peak accelerations during impacts for a range of static loads are shown for several drop heights. The new method for determining the shock absorbing characteristics of cushioning materials for protective packaging has been described and demonstrated. It has been shown that cushion curves can be produced by combining the static compression and impact characteristics of the material. The dynamic factor was determined by the iterative least mean squares (ILMS) optimization technique in which the discrepancies between peak acceleration data predicted from the theoretical model and obtained from the impact tests are minimized. The approach enabled an efficient determination of cushion curves from a small number of experimental impact data.

Improving the Endurance Life of Deep Groove Ball Bearings for Automotive Transmission (자동차 변속기용 깊은 홈 볼 베어링의 내구수명 향상)

  • Automotive transmission systems are assembled with a large number of gears and shafts, and rolling bearings are used to ensure their smooth operation. Gear oil in the gear box contains solid particles such as wear debris from contacting gears and metallic chips. This particle-enriched lubricating oil can cause premature failure of the rolling bearings. Research aimed at improving the service life of these rolling bearings has been confined mainly to design and lubrication of the inner/outer rings and the rolling elements. In this paper, we redesigned the shape of the cage pocket of a deep groove ball bearing to reduce the premature failure due to particle contamination. Test bearings are assembled with this new cage design containing a hole punched in the cage pocket. Endurance tests are carried out using the contaminated lubricating oil with miracle grid as hard particle. The duration and damaged bearing component shapes are compared for two different cages. The B10 life of bearing with new cage is increased by about 66% compared to the conventional cage. This is because the hard particles can be easily discharged through the pocket hole without staying for a long time in the lubrication regions. This greatly decreases abrasive wear and dents on the highly stressed ball bearing surfaces. Therefore, the cage design of this study, containing a pocket hole, can significantly delay the premature failure of rolling bearings and improve the endurance life.

  • 최근들어 80인치 이상의 대경 고화질 display 및 휴대용 projection display 제작이 가능한 LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. LCoS projection display는 높은 개구율, 빠른 응답속도, 고화질, 대형 디스플레이 임에도 불구하고 낮은 제조단가 등의 여러 가지 장점을 가지고 있다. LCoS projection display의 핵심 기술로는 높은 투과도와 낮은 반사율을 갖는 유리기판, 무기 배향막 증착 기술, Si back plane과의 접합기술 등이 있다. 이 중 LCoS projection display 제작을 위한 첫 단계인 유리기판은 가시광선 영역에서 96% 이상의 높은 투과도와 3% 미만의 반사도를 요구하는 기술을 필요로 한다. 본 연구에서는 indium이 doping된 tin oxide (ITO)를 투명 전도성막으로 사용하고, $SiO_2/MgF_2$ 이중 박막을 반사방지막으로 채택하여 고투과도 및 저반사율을 갖는 유리기판 제조에 응용하였다. 먼저 15nm 두께의 ITO 박막을 DC sputtering을 이용하여 8-inch 크기의 corning1737 유리기판 상에 증착한 후, 그 반대편에 e-beam evaporation 장비를 사용하여 120nm 두께의 반사 방지막을 증착하였다. 또한 유리기판 상에 증착된 투명 전도성막의 표면개질을 위하여 Ar plasma를 이용하여 treatment를 수행하였다. 이 때 sputtering 조건은 DC power, Ar 유량 및 압력을 조절함으로서 높은 투과도를 갖는 최적의 조건을 구현하였고, e-beam evaporation을 이용한 반사방지막 증착 조건은 $SiO_2$$MgF_2$의 계면에서 빛의 반사를 최소화할 수 있는 최적의 조건을 구현하였다. 제작된 유리기판은 가시광선 영역에서 97% 이상의 투과도를 보였으며, 최대 2.8%의 반사율을 보여, LCoS display 제작에 적합함을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 Ar plasma 처리 후 ITO 박막의 면저항 값은 $100\;{\omega}/{\Box}$, 표면 거칠기는 rms 값 기준 0.095nm, 접촉각 $20.8^{\circ}$의 특성을 보여, 타 index matched transparent conducting oxide가 coating된 유리기판에 비해 우수한 특성을 보였다.

A Study on the Fatigue Strength Evaluation for Fillet Weldment including Stress Singularity using Structural Stress with Virtual Node Method (응력 특이점을 갖는 필릿 용접구조물의 피로해석을 위한 가상절점법을 이용한 구조응력 계산 기법 고찰)

  • Structural stress approach is well known as a mesh-size insensitive fatigue assessment method by using finite element analyses. It is, however, difficult to estimate the structural stress (SS) at weld end points due to stress singularities when shell elements are used. In this study, fatigue evaluations with longitudinal load carrying box fillet weldment under out-of-plane bending load have been performed by using virtual node method (VNM) in order to avoid the problem, which is called the weld end effect. Various combinations of virtual node parameters, such as reference point and virtual node locations, are investigated for the estimation of proper structural stress values applying VNM in a systematic manner. The appropriate guidance of virtual node parameter has been offered for the fillet weldment considered in the study. The structural stress values obtained by VNM have also been validated by comparing the result with finite element model including weld bead. Moreover, the fatigue strength of the fillet weldment based on the equivalent structural stress is shown to be consistent with the master S-N curve.

A Yeast MRE3/REC114 Gene is Essential for Normal Cell Growth and Meiotic Recombination

  • We have analyzed the MRE3/REC114 gene of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, previously detected in isolation of mutants defective in meiotic recombination. We cloned the MRE3/REC114 gene by complementation of the meiotic recombination defect and it has been mapped to chormosome XIII. The DNA sequence analysis revealed that the MRE3 gene is identical to the REC114 gene. The upstream region of the MRE3/REC114 gene contains a T_4C site, a URS (upstream repression sequence) and a TR (T-rich) box-like sequence, which reside upstream of many meiotic genes. Coincidentally, northern blot analysis indicated that the three sizes of MRE3/REC114 transcripts, 3.4, 1.4 and 1.2 kb, are induced in meiosis. A less abundant transcript of 1.4 kb is detected in both mitotic and meiotic cells, suggesting that it is needed in mitosis as well as meiosis. To examine the role of the MRE3/REC114 gene, we constructed mre3 disruption mutants. Strains carrying an insertion or null deletion of the MRE3/REC114 gene showed slow growth in nutrient medium and the doubling time of these cells increased approximately by 2-fond compared to the wild-type strain. Moreover, the deletion mutant (${\delta}$mre3) displayed no meiotically induced recombination and no viable spores. The mre3/rec114 spore lethality can be suppressed by spo13, a mutation that causes cells to bypass reductional division. The double-stranded breaks (DSBs) which are involved in initiation of meiotic recombination were not detected in the analysis of meiotic chromosomal DNA from the mre3/rec114 disruptant. From these results we suggest that the MRE3/REC114 gene product is essential in normal growth and in early meiotic stages involved in meiotic recombination.
