An object oriented programming(OOP) framework is presented to solve plane elastostatic contact problems by means of the boundary element method(BEM). Unified modeling language(UML) is chosen to describe the structure of the program without loss of generality, even though all implemented codes are written with C++. The implementation is based on computational abstractions of both mathematical and physical concepts associated with contact mechanics involving geometrical nonlinearities and the corner node problems for multi-valued traction. The overall class organization for contact analysis is discussed in detail. Numerical examples are also presented to verify the accuracy of the developed BEM program.
This paper presents an innovative stress-function variational approach in formulating the interfacial shear and normal stresses in an externally bonded concrete joint using carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) plies. The joint is subjected to surface traction loadings applied at both ends of the concrete substrate layer. By introducing two interfacial shear and normal stress functions on the CFRP-concrete interface, based on Euler-Bernoulli beam idea and static stress equations of equilibrium, the entire stress fields of the joint were determined. The complementary strain energy was minimized in order to solve the governing equation of the joint. This yields an ordinary differential equation from which the interfacial normal and shear stresses were proposed explicitly, satisfying all the multiple traction boundary conditions. Lamination theory for composite materials was also employed to obtain the interfacial stresses. The proposed approach was validated by the analytic models in the literature as well as through a comprehensive computational code generated by the authors. Furthermore, a numerical verification was carried out via the finite element software ABAQUS. In the end, a scaling analysis was conducted to analyze the interfacial stress field dependence of the joint upon effective issues using the devised code.

The steady state thermal stress intensity factors (TSIF's) are analyzed for hypocycloid, symmetric airfoil and symmetric lip type rigid inclusions embedded in infinite elastic solids, using Boganoff's complex variable approach in plane thermoplasticity. Two thermal conditions are considered, one with an uniform heat flow disturbed by an insulated rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape and the other with an uniform heat flow disturbed by a rigid inclusion of cusp crack shape with fixed boundary temperature. The tendencies of TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape are somewhat different from those of traction free cusp cracks. However, if k=-1, the non-dimensionalized TSIF's for rigid inclusions of cusp crack shape become those of traction free cusp cracks like the tendencies of the SIF's under mechanical loading conditions. The thermal stress and displacement components for a rigid circular inclusion of radius Ro are drived from the results of a hypocycloid crack type rigid inclusion.
Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) is an undulatory nematode which exhibits two distinct locomotion types of swimming and crawling. Although in its natural habitat C. elegans lives in a non-Newtonian fluidic environment, our current understanding has been limited to the behavior of C. elegans in a simple Newtonian fluid. Here, we present some experimental results on the penetrating behavior of C. elegans at the interface from liquid to solid environment. Once C. elegans, which otherwise swims freely in a liquid, makes a contact to the solid gel boundary, it begins to penetrate vertically to the surface by changing its stroke motion characterized by a stiffer body shape and a slow stroke frequency. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis reveals the flow streamlines produced by the stroke of worm. For the worm that crawls on a solid surface, we utilize a technique of traction force microscopy (TFM) to find that the crawling nematode forms localized force islands along the body where makes direct contacts to the gel surface.

The particular integral formulation for two(2D) and three(3D) dimensional inelastic transient dynamic stress analysis is presented. The elastostatic equation is used for the complementary solution. Using the concept of global shape function, the particular integrals for displacement and traction rates are obtained to approximate acceleration of the inhomogeneous equation. The Houbolt time integration scheme is used for the time-marching process. The Newton-Raphson algorithm for plastic multiplier is used to solve the system equation. Numerical results of four example problems are given to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the present formulation.

In the present paper, the static bending and buckling responses of functionally graded carbon nanotubes-reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beam under various boundary conditions are investigated within the framework of higher shear deformation theory. The significant feature of the proposed theory is that it provides an accurate parabolic distribution of transverse shear stress through the thickness satisfying the traction-free boundary conditions needless of any shear correction factor. Uniform (UD) and four graded distributions of CNTs which are FG-O, FG-X, FG- and FG-V are selected here for the analysis. The effective material properties of FG-CNTRC beams are estimated according to the rule of mixture. To model the FG-CNTRC beam realistically, an efficient Hermite-Lagrangian finite element formulation is successfully developed. The accuracy and efficiency of the present model are demonstrated by comparison with published benchmark results. Moreover, comprehensive numerical results are presented and discussed in detail to investigate the effects of CNTs volume fraction, distribution patterns of CNTs, boundary conditions, and length-to-thickness ratio on the bending and buckling responses of FG-CNTRC beam. Several new referential results are also reported for the first time which will serve as a benchmark for future studies in a similar direction. It is concluded that the FG-X-CNTRC beam is the strongest beam that carries the lowest central deflection and is followed by the UD, V, Λ, and FG-O-CNTRC beam. Besides, the critical buckling load belonging to the FG-X-CNTRC beam is the highest, followed by UD and FG-O.
In this work we introduce a higher-order hyperbolic shear deformation model for bending and frees vibration analysis of functionally graded beams. In this theory and by making a further supposition, the axial displacement accounts for a refined hyperbolic distribution, and the transverse shear stress satisfies the traction-free boundary conditions on the beam boundary surfaces, so no need of any shear correction factors (SCFs). The material properties are continuously varied through the beam thickness by the power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Based on the present refined hyperbolic shear deformation beam model, the governing equations of motion are obtained from the Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions for simply-supported beams are developed to solve the problem. To verify the precision and validity of the present theory some numerical results are compared with the existing ones in the literature and a good agreement is showed.
In the particular situations where the crack is terminated at an interface of two materials, the order of stress singularity depends on the elastic constants which specify the properties of two materials. A multidomain boundary element technique is used to solve a crack normal to bimaterial interface. A correct order of shape function is used for displacement by using the isoparametric elements by shifting adequately the side nodes adjacent to this crack tip. A shape function containing the same order of singularity as that in the interface crack is also used for the interpolation of traction. Numerical testing of a binaterial with a crack normal to the interface is carried out with three-node elements. The results obtained are compared with the previous solutions.
The order of the stress singularity that occurs at the termination of an interface between materials exhibiting bilinear stress-strain response under plane strain conditions has been calculated, The governing equation of elasticity together with traction-free boundary condition and interface continuity condition defines a two-point boundary value problem. The stress components near the free edge are assumed to be proportional to r/sup s-1/, with solutions existing only for certain values of s. Finding these values entails the solution of an eigenvalue problem. Because it has been impossible to integrate the differential equations analytically, the integration has been performed numerically with a shooting method coupled with a Newton improvement scheme.
In this paper, a refined shear deformation plate theory which eliminates the use of a shear correction factor was presented for FG sandwich plates composed of FG face sheets and an isotropic homogeneous core. The theory accounts for parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate. The mechanical properties of the plate are assumed to vary continuously in the thickness direction by a simple power-law distribution in terms of the volume fractions of the constituents. Based on the present refined shear deformation plate theory, the governing equations of equilibrium are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Numerical illustrations concern buckling behavior of FG sandwiches plates with Metal-Ceramic composition. Parametric studies are performed for varying ceramic volume fraction, volume fraction profiles, Boundary condition, and length to thickness ratios. The accuracy of the present solutions is verified by comparing the obtained results with the existing solutions.
