  • Through comparing the mean wind profiles observed overland during the passages of four typhoons, and the gradient wind speeds calculated based on the sea level pressure data provided by a numerical model, the present paper discusses, (a) whether the gradient balance is a valid assumption to estimate the wind speed in the height range of 1250 m ~ 1750 m, which is defined as the upper-level mean wind speed, in a tropical cyclone over land, and (b) if the super-gradient feature is systematically observed below the height of 1500 m in the tropical cyclone wind field over land. It has been found that, (i) the gradient balance is a valid assumption to estimate the mean upper-level wind speed in tropical cyclones in the radial range from the radius to the maximum wind (RMW) to three times the RMW, (ii) the super-gradient flow dominates the wind field in the tropical cyclone boundary layer inside the RMW and is frequently observed in the radial range from the RMW to twice the RMW, (iii) the gradient wind speed calculated based on the post-landfall sea level pressure data underestimates the overall wind strength at an island site inside the RMW, and (iv) the unsynchronized decay of the pressure and wind fields in the tropical cyclone might be the reason for the underestimation.

  • This study predicts the basic characteristics of combustion instabilities in a gas turbine lean premixed combustor using ASCI3D code which is a FEM(Finite Element Method)-based Helmholtz solver. The prediction results show the good agreement with the measured data in modeling the overall combustion instability features, however, the code is found to overpredict the unstable conditions. As one of the efforts to improve the model accuracy, the effects of acoustic boundary conditions on the instability growth rate are analyzed. As a result, it is shown that the acoustic reflection coefficient has a great impact on the instability and the prediction accuracy can be enhanced by defining the precise acoustic conditions.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the hydraulic behavior in a stream reach using SMS RMA-2 model with a series of dynamic boundary conditions of main stream and lateral flows simulated by WMS HEC-1 program. For the stream reach (10.5 km) between Gongdo and Pyeongtaek water level gauge stations of Anseongcheon, the model simulated two dimensional flow characteristics by applying dynamic flow conditions of rainfall frequencies of 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 years for the main stream and three tributaries. The temporal flow behavior successfully simulated and the results showed that the distribution of mean velocity and water level within the stream reach increased according to the increase of flow frequency. Especially, the flow velocity sensibly increased at the near downstream of lateral inflow as the width of main stream is narrower.

  • In todays security industry, personal identification is also based on biometric. Biometric identification is performed basing on the measurement and comparison of physiological and behavioral characteristics, Biometric for recognition includes voice dynamics, signature dynamics, hand geometry, fingerprint, iris, etc. Iris can serve as a kind of living passport or living password. Iris recognition system is the one of the most reliable biometrics recognition system. This is applied to client/server system such as the electronic commerce and electronic banking from stand-alone system or networks, ATMs, etc. A new algorithm using nonlinear function in recognition process is proposed in this paper. An algorithm is proposed to determine the localized iris from the iris image received from iris input camera in client. For the first step, the algorithm determines the center of pupil. For the second step, the algorithm determines the outer boundary of the iris and the pupillary boundary. The localized iris area is transform into polar coordinates. After performing three times Wavelet transformation, normalization was done using sigmoid function. The converting binary process performs normalized value of pixel from 0 to 255 to be binary value, and then the converting binary process is compare pairs of two adjacent pixels. The binary code of the iris is transmitted to the by server. the network. In the server, the comparing process compares the binary value of presented iris to the reference value in the University database. Process of recognition or rejection is dependent on the value of Hamming Distance. After matching the binary value of presented iris with the database stored in the server, the result is transmitted to the client.

  • In this paper, we investigated an anomalous hump phenomenon under the positive bias stress in p-type LTPS TFTs. The devices with inferior electrical performance also show larger hump phenomenon. which can be explained by the sub-channel induced from trapped electrons under thinner gate oxide region. We can confirm that the devices with larger hump have larger interface trap density ($D_{it}$) and grain boundary trap density ($N_{trap}$) extracted by low-high frequency capacitance method and Levinson-Proano method, respectively. From the C-V with I-V transfer characteristics, the trapped electrons causing hump seem to be generated particularly from the S/D and gate overlapped region. Based on these analysis, the major cause of an anomalous hump phenomenon under the positive bias stress in p-type poly-Si TFTs is explained by the GIDL occurring in the S/D and gate overlapped region and the traps existing in the channel edge region where the gate oxide becomes thinner, which can be inferred by the fact that the magnitude of the hump is dependent on the average trap densities.

  • The groundwater flow and contaminant transport numerical models have been established for understanding the movement of pollutants in surface soil environment. The numerical solutions were compared with the analytic solutions for the verification and the application of the models. The numerical solutions from the groundwater and transport models agreed welt with analytic solutions. Especially, the results of groundwater flow model were validated in one- and two-dimensional heterogeneous media. Therefore, it will represent well the characteristics of the heterogeneous media in the field applications. Also, the phenomena of the pollutant dispersion represented quite well by the advection and the hydrodynamic dispersion in the results of the transport model. The important input factor is the choice of complicated boundary conditions in operating the numerical models. The numerical results are influenced by the choice of the proper boundary conditions.

  • Unsteady aerodynamic characteristics of the wing with flaperon flying over nonplanar ground surface are investigated using a boundary-element method. The time-stepping method is used to simulate the wake shape according to the motion of the wing and flaperon over the surface or in the channel. The aerodynamic coefficient according to the periodic motion of the flaperon is shown as the shape of loop. The rolling moment coefficient of the wing flying in the channel is same as that of the wing flying over the ground surface. The variation range of pitching moment is wider when the wing flies in the channel than over the ground surface. The present method can provide various aerodynamic derivatives to secure the stability of superhigh speed vehicle flying over nonplanar ground surface using the present method.

  • The hydrodynamic instability of the three-dimensional boundary layer on a rotating disk introduces a periodic modulation of the mean flow in the form of stationary cross flow vortices. The instability labeled Type II by Faller occurs first at lower Reynolds number than that of well known Type I instability. Detailed numerical values of the amplification rates, neutral curves and other characteristics of the two instabilities have been calculated over a wide range of parameters. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning the two instability modes by solving the appropriate linear stability equations reformulated not only by considering whole convective terms but also by correcting some errors in the previous stability equations. The present stability results agree with the previously known ones within reasonable limit. Consequently, the flow is found to be always stable for a disturbance whose dimensionless wave number is greater than 0.75. Some spatial amplification contours have been computed for the stationary disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$= 11.29$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ and for the moving disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$ = 12.5$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$. Also, some temporal amplification contours have been computed for the stationary disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$= 11.29$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ and for the moving disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle $\varepsilon$= 12$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$. The flow instability was observed by using a white titanium tetrachloride gas over rotating disk system. When the numerical results are compared to the present experimental data, the numerical results agree quantitatively, indicating the existence of the selective frequency mechanism.

  • The wall heat transfer of backward-facing step laminar flows with different Prandtl numbers and a pulsating inlet is investigated by unsteady simulations. The inlet is perturbed by the variation of frequency and amplitude. Temperature-dependent transport properties are adopted. Various characteristics of the wall heat transfer are explained by the variation of the thermal boundary layer. For Pr < 1, the wall heat transfer of temperature-dependent properties is decreased compared to that of constant properties, whereas it increases for Pr < 1. In addition, the wall heat transfer increases depending on the pulsating amplitude. However, the results of frequency variation for St < 0.2 show that the heat transfer is strongly enhanced at a specific frequency. In particular, the increase in the wall heat transfer is strongly related to the root mean square of the fluctuations of the reattachment length.
