  • The so-called Korean BNC (bound noun construction) displays complex syntactic, semantic, and constructional properties. This paper, couched upon a constraint-based approach, two different syntactic structures for the construction with articulated lexical properties for the BNs and relevant predicates. The paper reports an implementation of this analysis in the LKB (Linguistic Knowledge Building) system and shows us that this direction is robust enough to pare relevant sentences.

  • Like English, Korean employs several complicated types of cleft constructions. This paper deals with two main types of Korean cleft constructions: predicational and identificational. It first reviews the formal properties of these two types and then provides a constraint-based analysis that can be computationally implemented. In particular, the paper assumes two types of noun KES (one as a common noun and the other as a bound noun) and treats the argument-gapped cleft clause similar to relative clauses while treating the adjunct-gapped cleft clause as a noun-complement construction. The paper further shows that the cleft constructions are closely linked to the copula constructions, sharing many common properties while having their own constructional constraints.

  • This paper aims to research the language changes in modern Korean and its effect to the language processing systems. In modern Korean. the syntactic constructions l like [Adnominal Ending + Bound Noun ( + Postposition)] are changing into the morphological constructions, and some of these constructions are reflected in the written language. For example. the syntactic construction [Ad nominal Ending + '-de (Bound N Noun)' (+ Postposition) ) co-exists with the mixed form '-neunde' and [Adnominal Ending + 'geot' (Bound Noun) + '-j' (Postposition)) does with ' neunge'. These constructions are used frequently in the spoken language. As like other verbal endings, these forms also participate in the construction of the complex sentence, and these forms have its own case function fused into themselves So, the analytic approach to these forms can make great effect on the automatic morphological analysis systems. automatic tagging systems. and the syntactic analysis systems. So. in the design phase of a language processing systems, the language change phenomena like these must be taken l into consideration.

  • This paper aims to describe KorLexClas 1.5 which provides us with a very large list of Korean numeral classifiers, and with the co-occurring noun categories that select each numeral classifier. Differently from KorLex of other POS, of which the structure depends largely on their reference model (Princeton WordNet), KorLexClas 1.0 and its extended version 1.5 adopt a direct building method. They demand a considerable time and expert knowledge to establish the hierarchies of numeral classifiers and the relationships between lexical items. For the efficiency of construction as well as the reliability of KorLexClas 1.5, we use following processes: (1) to use various language resources while their cross-checking for the selection of classifier candidates; (2) to extend the list of numeral classifiers by using a shallow parsing techniques; (3) to set up the hierarchies of the numeral classifiers based on the previous linguistic studies; and (4) to determine LUB(Least Upper Bound) of the numeral classifiers in KorLexNoun 1.5. The last process provides the open list of the co-occurring nouns for KorLexClas 1.5 with the extensibility. KorLexClas 1.5 is expected to be used in a variety of NLP applications, including MT.
