  • A two-colored digraph D is primitive if there exist nonnegative integers hand k with h + k > 0 such that for each pair (i, j) of vertices there exists an (h, k)-walk in D from i to j. The exponent of the primitive two-colored digraph D is the minimum value of h + k taken over all such hand k. In this paper, we give the tight upper bound on the exponents of a class of primitive two-colored digraphs with (s + 1) n-cycles and one (n - 1)-cycle, and the characterizations of the extremal two-colored digraphs.

  • In this paper, a two-stage hybrid flow shop problem is considered. Specifically, there exist identical parallel machines at stage 1 and two dedicated machines at stage 2, and the objective of the problem is to minimize makespan. After being processed by any machine at stage 1, a job must be processed by a specific machine at stage 2 depending on the job type, and one type of jobs can have different processing times on each machine. First, we introduce the problem and establish complexity of several variations of the problem. For some special cases, we develop optimal polynomial time solution procedures. Then, we establish some simple lower bounds for the problem. In order to solve this NP-hard problem, three heuristics based on simple rules such as the Johnson's rule and the LPT (Longest Processing Time first) rule are developed. For each of the heuristics, we provide some theoretical analysis and find some worst case bound on relative error. Finally, we empirically evaluate the heuristics.

  • The study is concerned with an analysis on the hydrofilm extrusion through conical dies. The upper bound method is adopted for the analysis of metal deformation in connection with hydrodynamic lubrication theory for the lubricant in order to determine the extrusion pressure for some variables such as reduction of area, die cone angle. In the upper bound method, a kinematically admissible velocity field is found by assuming proper streamlines and applying the flow function concept to the region of plastic deformation. The effect of work hardening is incorporated approximately by calculating the strains at the exit of the die. The experiments are carried out with the commercially pure aluminium for some chosen variables at room temperature. It is shown that the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

  • Numerical calculation tool for forging of gear-like components based on kinematically admissible velocity fields for upper bound method applicable to various deformation features of workpiece in forging processes were suggested. Each one of them deals with unidirectional flow of metal on dies, such as external involute spur gear, sequare spline, internal serrations. A complex calcuation tool of gear-like component forging process was built up by combining these kinematically velocity fields. In this paper, the workpiece with both external and internal teeth is divided into two parts. The deformation of each part is analyzed simultaneously using numerical calculation tool form combined kinematically admissible velocity field. The experimental set-up was installed in a 200 ton hydraulic press. As a result, each kinematically admissible velocity field could be combined with other and the calculated solution are useful to predict the capacity of forging equipment.

  • The semiconductor industry relies on digital optical imaging for the overlay metrology of integrated circuit patterns. One critical performance demand in the particular application of digital imaging is placed on the edge resolution that is defined as the smallest detectable displacement of an edge from its image acquired in digital from. As the critical feature size of integrated circuit patterns reaches below 0.35 micrometers, the edge resolution is required to be less than 0.01 micrometers. This requirement is so stringent that fundamental behaviors of digital optical imaging need to be explored especially for the precision coordinate metrology. Our investigation reveals that the edge resolution shows quasi-random characteristics, not being simply deduced from relevant opto-electronic system parameters. Hence, a stochastic upper bound analysis is made to come up with the worst edge resolution that can statistically well predict actual indeterminate edge resolutions obtained with high magnification microscope objectives.

  • The flow field if a ship's propulsion mechanism of Weis-Fogh type is studied by the discrete vertex method. The wing in a channel is approximated by a finite number of bound vortices, and free vortices representing the separated flow are introduced from the trailing edge if the wing. The time histories of the thrust, the drag, and the moment acting on the wing are calculated, including the unsteady force due to the change of strength of the bound vortices. These calculated values agree well with the experimental values. The flow field of this propulsion mechanism is numerically clarified.

  • Addition of l00mM $MgSO_4$ to a cell culture after 54 hours resulted in a 2.4-fold increase in the sisomicin titre compared to a control to which no $MgSO_4$ was added, and a considerable amount of intracellular sisomicin was liberated outside the cells. The occurrence of product inhibition in fermentation was confirmed by a reduction in net sisomicin production with increasing amounts of added sisomicin without addition of $MgSO_4$. All added sisomicin was bound to sisomicin-free cells in the absence of $MgSO_4$, whereas approximately 40% of added sisomicin was bound with the addition of l00mM $MgSO_4$. Under conditions of no enzmye synthesis, maintained by adding chloramphenicol to exclude product repression, sisomicin was produced in the presence of 100 mM $MgSO_4$ but little sisomicin was produced in the absence of $MgSO_4$.

  • Many enzymes require the participation of readily dissociable coenzymes as NAD for thir catalytic activities. The continuous utilization of the enzymes requires the retention and regeneration of the coenzymes. For this purpose, several kinds of macromolecular NAD derivatives have been prepared by covalently attaching NAD to watersoluble polymers. We have prepared poly (ethylene glycol)-bound NAD (PEG-NAD) by coupling N$\^$6/-(2-carboxyethyl)-NAD to one terminal of ${\gamma}$ $\omega$-diaminoly (ethylene glycol) (Mr 3000) with water-soluble carbodiimide. PED-NAD thus obtained has one NAD moiety located at a terminal of the linear, flexible and hydrophilic chain of poly (ethylene glycol). PED-NAD has good coenzyme activity for various dehydrogenases and is applicable in a continuous enzyme reactor. To use these macromolecular NAD derivatives in an enzyme reactor, it si necessary to understand the behavior of the system in which the reactions of dehydrogenases are coupled by the recycling of the NAD derivative. We investigated the kinetic properties of a continuous enzyme reactor containing lactate dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase and PEG-NAD. The steady-state behavior of the enzyme reactor is explained by a simple kinetic model.

  • Atmospheric concentrations of PCBs were monitored in Ansung-city, Kyonggi province during the 2001/2002 to characterize the concentration distribution and seasonal variation of particle polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Average concentration of particle bound PCB showed maximum value for penta-CBs and minimum value for octa-CBs. Seasonal contributions $(%\)$ of total particle PCBs showed the highest value in winter months and lowest value in summer month, This result indicated that concentration of total particle PCBs increased with decreasing temperature in the atmosphere. Therefore, particle PCBs were easily formed by the condensation of gas phase PCBs in winter months. The total particle PCBs exhibited an inverse correlation with temperature (p<0.01) which suggested that particle PCBs were easily formed by condensation of gaseous PCBs in winter months.

  • Given an n-length text T over a $\sigma$-size alphabet, we present a compressed representation of T which supports retrieving queries of rank/select/access and updating queries of insert/delete. For a measure of compression, we use the empirical entropy H(T), which defines a lower bound nH(T) bits for any algorithm to compress T of n log $\sigma$ bits. Our representation takes this entropy bound of T, i.e., nH(T) $\leq$ n log $\sigma$ bits, and an additional bits less than the text size, i.e., o(n log $\sigma$) + O(n) bits. In compressed space of nH(T) + o(n log $\sigma$) + O(n) bits, our representation supports O(log n) time queries for a log n-size alphabet and its extension provides O(($1+\frac{{\log}\;{\sigma}}{{\log}\;{\log}\;n}$) log n) time queries for a $\sigma$-size alphabet.
