  • A name of 'Sea Ship' and 'River Ship' had been used based on the comprehension for the difference of ship's hull form in Chosun period. We can find a number of literature describing the situation which transferred the cargo from Sea Ship to River Ship because Sea Ship could not go upstream in the river of which the current is fast and the water depth is low. The reason why Sea Ship could not go upstream was that the bottom of Sea Ship was narrow, it means the non-flat bottom. Generally Sea Ship had short length, wide breadth, so L/B of 2.2∼3.0, and high draft and depth. River Ship has long length, narrow breadth, so L/B of 5.0∼6.3, and low draft and the flat bottom in order to adapt to the low water depth of the river.

  • The behavior of negative buoyant flow into a reservoir with sloping bottom is analysed by numerical solution technique of the governing equations composed of continuty, momentum and constituent transport equation. The stable plunge point and maximum travel distance are found to be dependent on the bottom slope of reservoir as well as inflow densimetric Froude number, $Fr_e$. They are also related closely to a vortex formed just downstream from the plunge point and above the underflow. The plunge depth was shown to be a function of th bottom slope and $Fr_e$. The plunge depths obtained in this numerical study agree relatively well with published data and theoretical studies, and its predictive equation is derived.

  • Slow sand filtration processes amended with 5 and 10cm GAC layers at top was compared to same process at bottom in a pilot study for humic substances removal. In case of 5cm GAC layer, the process amended at bottom was superior to the process at top in DOC and UV254nm removal and same trends were observed in case of 10cm GAC layer. Head loss developments of the process GAC at bottom were higher than the process GAC at top so that maintenance of the process GAC at top is easier than the process GAC at bottom.

  • Subsea tunnels that link land to island and among nations for transportation, efficient development of limited surface and pursuit of economic development should be designed to support pore water pressure on the lining. It is generally constructed in the bed rock of the sea bottom. When the tunnel excavation face meets fractured-zones below sea bottom, collapse may occur due to an increase of pore water pressure and large inflow. Such an example can be found in the Norwegian subsea tunnel experiences in 1980's. In this study hydraulic behavior of tunnel heading is investigated using numerical method based on the collapse of Norwegian subsea tunnel. The effect of pore water pressure and inflow rate were mainly concerned. Horse-shoe shaped model tunnel which has 50 m depth from the sea bottom is considered. To evaluate hydraulic performance, parametric study was carried out for varying relative permeability. It is revealed that pore water pressure has increased with an increase of sea depth. Especially, at the fractured-zone, pore water pressure on the lining has increased significantly. Inflow rate into tunnel has also increased correspondingly with an increase in sea depth. S-shaped characteristic relation between relative permeability and normalized pore water pressure was obtained.

  • Water pollution in a semi-enclosed sea area such as a bay due to stagnancy of water has been a serious water environmental problem. Recently, some kinds of new methods to activate the tidal exchange between an inner bay and an outer sea area by control of a tidal residual current have been proposed. However, these methods have several problems, that is, I). deterioration in a natural view due to building of huge structures, II). increase of risk of navigation in case of a submerged structure, III). limition of sea area where a tidal current can be controlled and IV). difficulty in removing those structures in case of occurrence of an unexpected impact on water environment. In this paper, a new method is proposed, which can solve all the above problems, to purify water quality in a semi-enclosed bay by creation and control of a pattern of a tidal residual current. The tidal residual current is controlled by unsymmetric structures, which change the properties of resistance according to the direction of flow, arranged on the sea bottom. In this study, several numerical and hydraulic experiments of tidal current and particle-tracking for various arrangements of bottom roughness in a semi-enclosed model bay were carried out. As a result of experiments, it becomes clear that it is possible to generate a new tidal residual current and to activate a tidal exchange by only operation of bottom roughness arrangement.

  • We researched the mechanism on th flucturain of Bottom Cold Water in the western channel of Korea Strait, using 13 years(1981~1933) oceanographic data of FRDA. The bottom cold water in the western channel appears more often in summer and fall than in winter and spring, and its year-to-year variation of temperature is very large. Such variation seems to be closely related with the variations of cold waters in the subsurface layer of the southwestern East Sea. According to the longitudinal temperature distribution along the korean southeastern coast, a density difference occurs all the time at the still deepth between the western channel and the southwestern East Sea. Thus, it is inferred that the cold waters would intrude into the western channle form the subsurface layer in the southwestern East Sea as a density-driven current, and it intensity depends upon the density difference.

  • The cold water mass around the southeast coast of the Korean Peninsula is analyzed by using CSK data from 1966 through 1970. It is shown that this water mass flows down from the region offshore of Jukbyun to the area of Youngil Bay along the 100meter contour line of bottom topography. In ordinary summer conditions when the current velocity in the Korea Strait is usually above about 50cm/sec and the wind direction is southwest, the cold water ascends to the surface and makes the surface temperature gradient large, unless disturbed by a tropical cyclon. The bottom water of the Korea Strait is formed by the stratification after the Tsushima intermediate water and the Japan Sea intermediate water have been mixed. In winter the Tsushima intermediate water with high salinity sinks rapidly around the inlet of the Japan Sea and prevents the Japan Sea intemediate water from entering the Korea Strait.

  • In order to understand the characteristics of the distribution and the nutrients of the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water during summer to fall, temperature, salinity and nutrients have been investigated in the fifteen stations in the Yellow Sea. In september, the Changjiang diluted water with more than $20^{\circ}C$ distributed in the surface and the Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water distributed in the layer below 30m depth with less than $10^{\circ}C$. Specially, water mass with less than $5^{\circ}C$ in the layer below 50m depth expanded southward down to the north latitude of $35^{\circ}$ with expanding more to the coasts of China than to the coasts of Korea. The salinity of the cold water mass with $8^{\circ}C$ in the deep layer of more than 50m depth was relatively high as 33.5 psu and expanded northward forming fronts of temperature and salinity. The concentration of total inorganic nitrogen was two times higher in the cold water mass than in the surface water, which means that resolution and consumption were low due to cold temperature in the bottom layer. In conclusion, the cold water expanded southward down to the north latitude of $35^{\circ}$ by September and had high concentration of nutrients.

  • POM(Princeton Ocean Model) was utilized in this study because it took ${\sigma}-coordinate$ system which could predict the behavior of bottom water. The model has been increasingly applied to costal area although it was initially developed as the ocean flow model. The original POM did not correct computational errors in transformation of ${\sigma}-coordinate$ system. The trying to reduce conversional errors might improve accuracy of flow velocity in vicinities of bottom layer. Therefore, in this study it was proposed to modify the original POM by using error correction method suggested by $Sl{\Phi}rdal$(1997). The modified POM was applied to Young-rang Lake, one of the typical brackish lakes in Korea. It was found that the behavior of bottom water could be well predicted. Thus, it seems that the modified POM can be used as a useful tool to clarify the mechanism of formation and behavior of bottom water including oxygen-deficient water mass.
