An Experimental Study on the Effects of Bottom Ash Compaction Pile in the Sea Clay Layer (해성 점토지반의 저회다짐말뚝 보강 효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Many economical and efficient methods such as sand drain method(SD), plastic board drain(PBD), sand compaction pile, vacuum consolidation method, etc., have been used for soft grounds. The case of sand compaction pile has an effect on accelerating consolidation and increasing bearing capacity by penetration at regular intervals under soft grounds for reducing the drainage path. But, this method has caused not only the nature damage by extracting the sands indiscreetly but also the economical problem for importing the sands because it needs so much sand to make the sand compaction pile. Thus, this study choosed the bottom ash which has similar engineering characteristics with sand. It was performed that clogging test and large direct shear test changing the bottom ash replacement ratio in soft ground for studying strength characteristics of soft ground using bottom ash compaction pile. As a result of the test, the internal friction angle was largely increased and the cohesion was decreased as the replacement ratio increased.

  • The friction velocity is a quantity with the dimensions of velocity defined by the friction stress and density of a wall surface at near wall of flow condition. Also, the friction velocity is the hydraulic parameter describing shear force at the bottom flow. Moreover, it is a very important factor in designing open channel and essential to determine the mixing coefficient in the main flow direction. The estimation of the friction velocity are such as methods using channel slope, linear law of the mean velocity at viscous sub-layer and direct measurement of wall shear stress, etc. In the present study, we propose a friction velocity equation that has been optimized by combining the concept of entropy, which is used in stochastic method, and to verify the proposed equation, the experimental data measured by Song was used. The R squared for friction velocities between proposed equation and friction velocity formula analyzed 0.999 to 1.000 in a very good agreement with each equation.

  • To prevent the percolation of leachate through the bottom of waste landfills, the liner system of various layers, such as compacted clay, geomembrane, geonet, geotextiles, and geocomposite is designed. Since the friction angle between a geomembrane and other geosynthetics is usually lower than that of the soil alone, the interfaces between soil and geosynthetic or geosynthetic-geosynthetic may become a possible plane of weakness, which leads to potential instability of the system under load of waste at side slopes. In this study, large triaxial tests are carried out with samples of remoulded wastes and direct shear interface friction tests are carried out to understand the frictional properties of geosynthetic-geosynthetic interfaces, which are required for analyzing the safety of side-slope liner systems.

  • Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) provides an efficient procedure for introducing an ultrafine grain size into a material. In this study, ECAP were conducted on IF-steel to investigate the effect of friction and processing temperatures on the deformation characteristics of the samples. Due to the blocking effect of the previously pressed samples residing in the exit channel, the shear pattern (especially on the bottom region) changes.

Shear strength of connections between open and closed steel-concrete composite sandwich structures

  • The behavior of connections between open sandwich slabs and double steel skin composite walls in steel plate-concrete(SC) structure is investigated by a series of experimental programs to identify the roles of components in the transfer of forces. Such connections are supposed to transfer shear by the action of friction on the interface between the steel surface and the concrete surface, as well as the shear resistance of the bottom steel plate attached to the wall. Experimental observation showed that shear transfer in slabs subjected to shear in short spans is explained by direct force transfer via diagonal struts and indirect force transfer via truss actions. Shear resistance at the interface is enhanced by the shear capacity of the shear plate as well as friction caused by the compressive force along the wall plate. Shear friction resistance along the wall plate was deduced from experimental observation. Finally, the appropriate design strength of the connection is proposed for a practical design purpose.

Bearing Capacity Characteristics of Drilled Shafts using Percussion Rotary Drilling (PRD 공법을 이용한 매입말뚝의 지지력 특성)

  • The bearing capacity of drilled shafts that take excavation by Percussion Rrotary Drilling(PRD) into consideration was evaluated using static and dynamic pile load tests. The emphasis was on quantifying the allowable bearing capacity and point load-transfer at the pile tip on seven instrumented steel piles. Of the seven instrumented piles, five piles are placed to the bottom of the excavation by rotary and pushing into the final depth of the excavation, as opposed to the two driven piles. Based on the results obtained, it is shown that the skin friction mobilized by PRD is much greater than point resistance, whereas in driven piles, the point resistance is greater than skin friction. It is also found that much greater pile capacity was proved in the case of drilled shafts, compared to the driven piles and thus, the excavation by rotary drilling gives reliable pile capacity required to design axially loaded piles.

  • In the design of wood structures, the consideration of the dynamic load effect has been increased. Generally, damping ratio is presented as the method of considering dynamic load effect. So, the relationship between joint type and damping ratio was investigated. It has been known that the joint extremely damp the dynamic load in wood structures. Static test was performed to determine the effects of nail size and friction area on joint strength and stiffness. Joint strength and stiffness were increased with nail size. However, the static properties of joint was not affected by friction area. Cyclic test was performed to determine the effects of nail size, friction area and load magnitude on damping ratio, Damping ratio was affected by all factors. Increasing the width of the bottom plate was suggested as the most adequate method to increase the damping ratio without the reduction of the static properties of the structures.

  • Regionally averaged heat transfer distributions and friction factors in square channels with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are experimentally investigated. The effects of surface heating condition on heat transfer enhancement are also investigated. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum plates. The interrupted square ribs are arranged along the axial flow direction on the bottom wall only. Experimental tests are performed for Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000. The results are compared with those of previous investigations for circular tube with axial interrupted ribs and twisted tape inserts.

  • The equations for the wave orthogonals and wave heights are presented along the depth using time as the independent variable, The effect of wave refracion is included. In this paper, a numerical procedure is described for the calculation and two analytical solutions are presneted in case of straight and parallel bottom contours and horizontal bottom in order to check the computed results. The computer outputs are in the form of automatically plotted wave orthogonals and wave heights along the wave path. In practical calculation of wave heights, Samchuckk Pohang, and Hanlim are selected as plane sloping bottoms.
