Scattering of a Kelvin Wave by a Cylindrical Island (원통형 섬에 의한 Kelvin 파의 산란)

  • The theory for long wave scattering (Proudman, 1914: Longuet-Higgins, 1970) is applied to a tidal-frequency Kelvin wave propagating around a small cylindrical island in a shelf sea of uniform depth. The theory includes the effects of bottom friction on wave propagation. The theoretical analysis of the Kelvin wave around the island. this amplitude change results in a uniform amplitude of the total wave along the circumference of the island in an inviscid fluid, and the dynamic cause of this is explained in terms of Coriolis effects. Bottom friction attenuates the amplitude of the total wave from the frontal side of the island to the leeward side, but the amplitude variation along the coast becomes symmetric to the line connecting both idea. The phase of the scattered wave contributes to more rapid travel of the total wave in the front and leeward side than farther offshore. The effects of bottom friction on the wave phase around the island are negligible.

An Analytical Model of Co-oscillating Tide under Frictional Effect in the Yellow Sea

  • The response of the tidal waves to friction effect is investigated in terms of deformation of Kelvin and Poincare modes, The 1st Poincare mode does not exist over the low frequency region less than the critical frequency of omega ${\omega}$${\sqrt{2f}}$, with ${\gamma}$/f=0.0, but the mode comes to exist in the presence of friction. When friction exists and its magnitude increases, the wave number increases, indicating that the wave length of the Poincare mode becomes increasingly short with increasing friction. The damping coefficient gradually increases with increasing friction over the high frequency region, but the trend is reversed over the low frequency region. In case of Kelvin wave the present study substantiates the characters of Kelvin wave examined by Mofjeld (1980) and Lee (1988). Based on the examination of frictional effects on the tidal wave propagation, the co-oscillating tides in the Yellow Sea are examined by considering both the head opening and bottom friction effects. As friction is introduced and increased in addition to partial opening at bay head, the location of the amphidromic point near the Shantung Peninsula moves more southwestward. This southwestward movement of the amphidromic point is increasingly compatible with the observed location of Ogura's or Nishida's tidal chart of the M$_2$ tide.

Location determining method of critical sliding surface of fillings in a karst cave of tunnel

  • A location determining method is proposed for critical sliding surface in the stability analysis of the filling materials in karst caves. First, a preliminary location of the sliding surface is determined based on simulation results which includes displacement contour and plastic zone. The sliding surface will locate on the bottom contact interface when the friction angle is relative small. However, a weakened contact interface always becomes the critical sliding surface no matter what the friction angle is. Then when the friction angle becomes larger, the critical sliding surface inside fillings can be determined by a parabola, the coefficient of which increases linearly with the friction angle under the same cohesion. Finally, the critical sliding surface approximately remains unchanged with friction angle. The influence of cohesion is similar to that of friction angle. Although affected by shape, size or position of the karst cave, the critical sliding surface mainly depends on both friction angle and cohesion. Thus, this method is always useful in determining the critical sliding surface.

Flow Visualization Using Thin Oil-Film in the Flow Control of Shock Wave/Turbulent Boundary-Layer Interactions (충격파와 경계층 간섭유동 제어에서 오일막을 이용한 유동가시화)

  • An experimental research has been carried out for flow control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing aeroelastic mesoflaps. Various shapes and thicknesses of the mesoflap are tested to achieve different deflections of the flap, and ail the results are compared to the solid-wall reference case without flow-control mechanism. Quantitative variation of skin friction has been measured downstream of the interactions using the laser interferometer skin friction meter, and qualitative skin friction distribution has been obtained by observing the interference fringe pattern on the oil-film surface. A strong spanwise variation in the fringe patterns with a narrow region of separation near the centerline is noticed to form behind the shock structure, which phenomenon is presumed partially related to three-dimensional flow structures associated with both the sidewalls and the bottom test surface. The effect of the shape of the cavity is also observed and it is noticed that the shape of the cavity is not negligible.

  • The oscillatory boundary layer that develops when surface waves propagate over the sea bottom affects many flow-pendent phenomena in the coastal zone. Examples of such phenomena are wave energy dissipation due to bottom friction and the initiation and transport of sediment (Grant and Madsen 1986).   • Heat transfer distributions and friction factors in square channels (3.5 ${\times}$ 3.5 cm) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs are respectively investigated. Tests are performed for Reynolds numbers ranging from 8,900 to 29,000. The rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter, e/Dh, is kept at 0.057 and test section length-to-hydraulic diameter, L/Dh is 30. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 3.3cm, length of 90cm, and 2.5 turns. The square ribs are arranged to follow the trace of the twisted tape and along the flow direction defined as axial interrupted ribs. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. The following conclusions from the experimental study were drawn as: 1) In the 4 heating wall channel with twisted tape inserts, Nusselt number based on bottom wall temperature is enhanced by 1.2 - 1.6 times if adding the axial interrupted ribs on the bottom wall only. 2) The twisted tape with interrupted ribs under the two-sided heating condition produces the highest heat transfer performance. 3) Friction factor data obtained for the square channel with twisted tape inserts plus axial interrupted ribs are less than those in the past publications for circular tubes with axial interrupted ribs and twisted tape inserts.

Some Physical Properties of Chopped Rice Straw (절단 볏짚의 물리적 성질)

  • This study was performed to determine the kinetic friction coefficient bulk density, dynamic and static angle of repose, and terminal velocity of the chopped rice straw in the moisture range of 8~23%, which could be used for better design and operation of the processing machinery and handling facilities. Friction coefficient was determined from the horizontal traction force measured by pulling the container holding the mass of rice straw on the various plate materials. Bulk density was measured with an apparatus consisting of a filling funnel and a receiving vessel. Dynamic angle of repose was calculated from the photos of bulk samples piled by gravity flow on a circular platform. Static angle of repose was determined by measuring the side angle of the bulk material which was left in the cylindrical container after natural discharge of the bulk sample through a circular hole in the bottom plate. Kinetic friction coefficients of rice straw on the PVC, mild steel, stainless steel, and galvanized steel were in the range of 0.303~0.434, 0.222~0.439, 0.204~0.448, and 0.206~0.407, respectively. and indicated linear increase with moisture content. The effects of moisture change on the friction coefficients were in the order of PVC, mild steel, galvanized steel, and stainless steel. Bulk density, dynamic and static angle of repose, and terminal velocity were in the range of 56.8~60.3 kg/m$^3$, 41.4~45.9$^{\circ}$, 94.4~100.8$^{\circ}$, and 1.07~4.48 m/s, respectively, and were increased linearly with the moisture content.

An Experimental Study on Bottom Ash for Utilization of Subbase Materials (저회의 성토재료 활용성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, many researches on bottom ash which is produced in the burning process of power plant are actively performed for its utilization for soil-subbase materials. In this paper, bottom ashes from 5 different power plants are prepared and several tests including compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression are carried out for mixed bottom ash and weathered soil considering 3 replacement ratio of 30%, 50%, and 70%. Through the tests, CBR result over 20 are evaluated without plastic property, which shows availability of subbase material. With higher increase in replacement ratio of bottom ash, CBR of mixed soil increases due to the higher mechanical performance of bottom ash. However, replacement effects of bottom ash on friction angle and cohesion are evaluated to be little since bottom ash plays a little role in rearrangement of mixed soil. Bottom ash with a good mechanical property is evaluated to have reasonable bearing capacity which shows a good property for subbase materials.

  • Many economical and efficient methods such as sand drain method(SD), plastic board drain(PBD), sand compaction pile, vacuum consolidation method, etc., have been used for soft grounds. The case of sand compaction pile has an effect on accelerating consolidation and increasing bearing capacity by penetration at regular intervals under soft grounds for reducing the drainage path. But, this method has caused not only the nature damage by extracting the sands indiscreetly but also the economical problem for importing the sands because it needs so much sand to make the sand compaction pile. Thus, this study choosed the bottom ash which has similar engineering characteristics with sand. It was performed that clogging test and large direct shear test changing the bottom ash replacement ratio in soft ground for studying strength characteristics of soft ground using bottom ash compaction pile. As a result of the test, the internal friction angle was largely increased and the cohesion was decreased as the replacement ratio increased.
