Bond Characteristics at the Interface between HMA Surface and RCC Base (아스팔트 표층과 RCC 기층 계면에서의 부착특성 연구)

  • PURPOSES : A composite pavement utilizes both an asphalt surface and a concrete base. Typically, a concrete base layer provides structural capacity, while an asphalt surface layer provides smoothness and riding quality. This pavement type can be used in conjunction with rollercompacted concrete (RCC) pavement as a base layer due to its fast construction, economic efficiency, and structural performance. However, the service life and functionality of composite pavement may be reduced due to interfacial bond failure. Therefore, adequate interfacial bonding between the asphalt surface and the concrete base is essential to achieving monolithic behavior. The purpose of this study is to investigate the bond characteristics at the interface between asphalt (HMA; hot-mixed asphalt) and the RCC base. METHODS : This study was performed to determine the optimal type and application rate of tack coat material for RCC-base composite pavement. In addition, the core size effect, temperature condition, and bonding failure shape were analyzed to investigate the bonding characteristics at the interface between the RCC base and HMA surface. To evaluate the bond strength, a pull-off test was performed using different diameters of specimens such as 50 mm and 100 mm. Tack coat materials such as RSC-4 and BD-Coat were applied in amounts of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and $1.1l/m^2$ to determine the optimal application rate. In order to evaluate the bond strength characteristics with temperature changes, a pull-off test was carried out at -15, 0, 20, and $40^{\circ}C$. In addition, the bond failure shapes were analyzed using an image analysis program after the pull-off tests were completed. RESULTS : The test results indicated that the optimal application rate of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were $0.8l/m^2$, $0.9l/m^2$, respectively. The core size effect was determined to be negligible because the bond strengths were similar in specimens with diameters of 50 mm and 100 mm. The bond strengths of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were found to decrease significantly when the temperature increased. As a result of the bonding failure shape in low-temperature conditions such as -15, 0, and $20^{\circ}C$, it was found that most of the debonding occurred at the interface between the tack coat and RCC surface. On the other hand, the interface between the HMA and tack coat was weaker than that between the tack coat and RCC at a high temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. CONCLUSIONS : This study suggested an optimal application rate of tack coat materials to apply to RCC-base composite pavement. The bond strengths at high temperatures were significantly lower than the required bond (tensile) strength of 0.4 MPa. It was known that the temperature was a critical factor affecting the bond strength at the interface of the RCC-base composite pavement.

The Investigation on Bond characteristics of Reinforced Concrete (철근콘크리트의 부착특성에 관한 연구)

  • Bond test was carried out to assess the effect of several variables on bond characteristics between reinforcing bar and concrete. Key variables are concrete compressive strength($f_c$'=340, 460, 6513, 904kg/$cm^2$), concrete cover (25, 38, 51, 105, IlOmm), and bar diameter(Dl3 and D22). Confining effect and bar spacing are not taken into account. Thirty-two specimens subjected to uniaxial tension were tested under hypothesis uniform bond stress distribution along the reinforcing bar embeded in concrete. Failure mode was examined and local bond stress versus slip relationship diagrams were represented to show effect of the above variables, also test results(u1timate bond stress) were compared with bond and development provisions of the ACI Building Code(AC1 318-89) and proposed equations from previous research. According to analysis, borld stress and ultimate bond stress increased although compressive strength increased beyond the ACI Building Code upper limit. Therefore in calculating development length. compressive strength effect(exceeding 700kg /$cm^2$) should be accounted.

Bonding Characteristics of Basalt Fiber Sheet as Strengthening Material for Railway Concrete Structures (Basalt 섬유쉬트의 철도시설 콘크리트구조물 보강재로서의 부착거동 연구)

  • Concrete structures become more common in railway systems with an advancement of high speed train technologies. As the service life of concrete structures increases, structural strengthening for concrete structures may be necessary. There are several typical strengthening techniques using steel plate and fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) materials, which have their own inherent shortcomings. In order to enhance greater durability and resistance to fire and other environmental attacks, basalt fiber material attracts engineer's attention due to its characteristics. This study investigates bonding performance of basalt fiber sheet as a structural strengthening material. Experimental variables include bond width, length and number of layer. From the bonding tests, there were three different types of bonding failure modes: debonding, rupture and rip-off. Among the variables, bond width indicated more significant effect on bonding characteristics. In addition the bond length did not contribute to bond strength in proportion to the bond length. Hence this study evaluated effective bond length and effective bond strength. The effective bond strength was compared to those suggested by other researches which used different types of FRP strengthening materials such as carbon FRP.

  • 본 논문에서는 철근콘크리트 부재의 뽐힘부착거동을 규명하기 위하여 일련의 포괄적인 실험 및 이론 연구를 수행하였다. 실험의 주요변수는 콘크리트의 압축강도, 철근간격 및 덮개, 그리고 철근의 부착길이 등을 선정하였다. 본 연구결과 철근 콘크리트의 부착강도는 뿐만아니라 부착길이, 철근의 덮개 등에 따라 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났으며, 본 연구에서는 이들의 영향을 정량적으로 도출하였다. 또한, 본 연구에서는 철근콘크리트의 부착강도식을 새롭게 제안하였으며, 부착응력-슬립관계식도 유도하여 제시하였다.

  • An automatic transmission model using the bond graph techniques is developed for analyzing shift characteristics of vehicles. Bond graph models can be systemically manipulated to yield state space equations of standard form. Bond graph techniques are applied for modeling overall automatic transmission systems and shift models. A fuzzy controller is synthesized for the verification of a shifting model in the ${1^st} gear to the {2^nd}$ gear. Simulation results show the fitness of models by the bond graph techniques.

Pullout Bond Characteristics of Untensioned Prestressing Strand (인장을 가하지 않은 PS강연선의 인발 부착특성)

  • The primary objective of this research is a study on the pullout bond characteristics of untensioned prestressing strand in concrete. The bond characteristics of untensioned prestressing strand in concrete differs from that of deformed reinforcing bar. In order to use and design untensioned prestressing strand as deformed reinforcing bar, a study for bond characteristics of the untensioned prestressing strand was progressed. Major test variables are embedment length ($10d_b{\sim}60d_b$), concrete cover (45mm, 70mm, 100m) and diameter of strands. (12.7mm : SWPC7, 9.3mm : SWPC7A) As a results, these showed that average bond stress was decreased as a growing the embedment length, and then showed that the bond performance of untensioned prestressing strand was improved if embedment length was above 60$60d_b$.

  • The transfer of forces across the interface by bond between concrete and steel is of fundamental importance to many aspects of reinforced concrete behavior. Bond stress - slip relationships were studied using a symmetrical tension test specimen. This type of test is intented to simulate conditions in the tension zone of a concrete beam between primary cracks and below the neutral axis. These relationships between local bond stress and local slip are quite different at different locations along the bar. The present study allows more accurate analysis of reinforced concrete structures by employing more realistic bond stress-slip relations.

  • This study is to investigate the bond characteristics of glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) reinforcing bars in concrete by pullout test experimentally. Three different types of GFRP bars with different surface deformations were considered in this study. Also, standard deformed steel reinforcing bar with or without epoxy-coating were included for the comparisons of bond strength. All test procedures including specimens preparation, test apparatus and measuring devices were made according to the recommendation of CSA(Canadian Standards Association) Standard S806-02. From the test results, it was found that small surface indentations contributed to increase the bond strength of GFRP bar significantly. Based on the limited test results till now, the bond strength of GFRP bar with sand-coated deformation commercially available in foreign market is around $80\%$ of that of steel deformed bars.

  • It is well known that the bond characteristics of fiber govern the performance of fiber reinforced composite material. A preliminary study was carried out to investigate the pull-out behavior of amorphous and conventional single fiber in cement mortar in accordance with the JCI(Japan Concrete Institute) SF-8. The test was performed under displacement control, and results showed that the bond strength decreased with increasing fiber length. In addition, the amorphous steel fiber showed much higher pull-out load per unit weight compared to conventional steel fiber.

  • This paper deals with the estimation of the bond stress based on experimental data that were tensed by axial force on both sides. It is certificated that the concrete stress condition clearly affects the bond-slip relationship. The proposed method utilizes the conventional bond-slip theories as well as the characteristics of deformed reinforcement and concrete cross-sectional area. An analytical equation for the estimation of the bond stress is formulated as the function of non-dimensional factors (e.g. bond stress, relative slip, etc.). The validity, accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method are established by comparing the analytical results with the experimental data of Ikki (1996, 1999) and the representative bond stress equations of Shima (1987). The analytical results presented in this paper indicate that the proposed method can be effectively estimated the bond stress-relative slip relationship.
