The low alloy-steel material(1.0Cr-0.5Mo, SA213T12), which has widely been used for the waterwall tube in the conventional power plant, do not have enough creep rupture strength for waterwall tubes of the Ultra-supercritical(USC) boilers. According to this reason, the high-strength low alloy-steel(2.25Cr-1.0Mo, SA213T22) has newly been adopted for the waterwall tube in the USC boilers. This paper presents failure analysis on weld-joint of the waterwall tubes in USC boilers. Visual inspections were performed to find out the characteristics of the fracture. Additionally both microscopic characteristics and hardness test were carried out on failed tube samples. Failures seem to happen mainly because the welding process has not been conducted strictly.(preheating, P.W.H.T and so forth). Thus, this paper has the purpose to describe the main cause of the poor welding process and to explain how to prevent similar failures in those weld-joints.
An experimental study was carried out to investigate the condensation performance for the horizontal cylindrical heat transfer tube with various fin attached using R-11 vapor. The heat transfer tube used in this study was supplied by SUNG HYUNG METAL CO., LTD. Four different types of heat transfer tubes (plain tube, SH-CYR tube, thermocor tube and thermoexcel tube) were used. Each tube was surrounded by circular acrylate tube, and R-11 gas heated by boiler flows into the acrylate tube. Cooling water counter-flows in heat transfer tubes. Heat transfer coefficient of the plain tube from measured data was compared with those of three other tubes. The results are summarized as follows: 1. As the cooling water temperature decreased, the liquid film of R-11 turned to droplet drop on the top surface of the horizontal tube. 2. Heat transfer coefficient calculated theoretically was higher than that obtained from the experimental data. 3. As far as the condensation concerns the thermocor tube is the highest, the SH-CYR tube is the second, and the thermoexcel tube is the third excluding the plain tube.
This paper presents failure analysis on weld-joint of the waterwall tubes in USC boilers. Visual inspections were performed to find out the characteristics of the fracture. Additionally both microscopic characteristics and hardness test were carried out on failed tube samples. Thus, this paper has the purpose to describe the main cause of the poor welding process and to explain how to prevent similar failures in those weld-joints.
Erosion due to abrasive particles contained in gas streams from boilers has been emerged as a significant problem in the coal fired power plants. Particle erosion accounted for approximately 50% of boiler failures and especially flyash erosion was responsible for 20~30% of emergency boiler shutdowns. Particularly, because of the high ash loading and high velocity, most erosion occurs in the boiler tubes and economiser tube bank where the direction of the gas stream changes to $180^{\circ}$ .In this study, a high temperature particle erosion tester was used to evaluate erosion rate in a simulated environment. The erosion parameters such as erosion temperature, particle impact angle, particle velocity and various particle size were changed. Flyash is the combustion product of the pulverized coal, where size is ranging from 1 to $200\mu\textrm{m}$. Flyash composed of mainly SiO$_2$, $A1_2$$_O3$, and $Fe_2$$O_3$has dense spherical particles and irregular particles containing numerous pores and cavities. From the erosion tests at various conditions, the maximum erosion was experienced at impact angles of $30^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$ In addition, erosion rate increased in proportional to velocity and temperature. And from the observation of the eroded surfaces, it was also concluded that 304 stainless steel was mainly eroded by extrusion-forging at high impact angle ($90^{\circ}$) and by microcutting mechanism at low impact angles ($30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$).
A separate heat pipe system capacity of 3,700kW has been developed and applied to preheating the blast furnace gas for recovery of the waste heat from boiler. The system is designed to preheat the blast furnace gas up to $126^{\circ}C$ by using tho boiler exhaust gas of which temperature is $180^{\circ}C{\sim}220^{\circ}C$. The arrangement of the fin tubes as well as the shape of the fin has been carefully determined to minimize the fouling problems. The heat pipe system was found to be stable in circulation of the working fluid and the range of the temperature variation of the preheated blast furnace gas was within $10^{\circ}C$. It was proved through a long-term test that the selected tube arrangement and the shape of the fins are proper to prevent the fouling problems and that the pay-back period of the system Is within one year.
The catastrophic collapse of the in-boiler scaffolding system in the two thermal power plants occurred in March and April 2012. After site investigation and document review, it was found that the specialized scaffolding system was imported for overhaul & maintenance and that the system did not get the safety certification at the import. In this regard, this study developed & proposed an access platform and a support for the vertical tube section of the super heat as well as a variable-length platform for the horizontal tube section, satisfying the domestic certification standards. The access platform was developed to be easy to handle by the worker with a weight of about 0.069 kN, which could reduce the risk of falling accidents and workers' musculoskeletal diseases. For the variable-length platform, it is possible to cope with various changes in length between the horizontal tubes associated with the increase of rigidity in the overlapping and the elimination of the protrusion.
In this study, a small punch creep (SP-Creep) test using miniaturized specimen has been described for the development of the new creep test method for high temperature structural components such as headers and tubes of boiler, turbine casing and rotor, and reactor vessel. The SP-Creep testing technique has been applied to 1Cr-0.5Mo steel used widely as boiler header material and the creep test temperature are varied at $550^{\circ}C{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. From the experimental results, e.g. SP-Creep curve behaviors, the creep rate in steady state and creep rupture life with test temperature and load, the load exponential value(n, m), the activation energy($Q_{spc}$), the Monkman-Grant relation and the creep life assessment equation etc., it can be summarized that the SP-Creep test may be a useful test method to evaluate the creep properties of the heat resisting material such as boiler header.
This system is the automatic boiler tube bending equipment which has four heads for bending the tube and the carriage for moving the tube. The system consists of two frames for transporting each moving parts, high-frequency heating equipment for heating the tube in hot bending, control panel for inputting the job data operating, remote control unit for concetration and distribution of input/output, and the monitoring system which can establish unmanned operationby receiving the bending job data via LAN form a design teamwhich produces the job data and schedule based on master production plan and diagnoses bending data change, input, whole system status, and system malfunctions. By employing this system, 30% of production improvement was achieved was achieved comparing to the existing bending system.

The boiler tubes of X20CrMoV12.1 used in fossil-fired power plants were obtained and analyzed for the effect of water treatment on the steam corrosion-induced oxide scale in an effort to better understand the oxide formation mechanism, as well as pertinent method of maintenance and lifetime extension. The specimens were analyzed using various microscopy and microanalysis techniques, with focuses on the effect of water treatment on the characters of scale. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the scales of specimens were composed of hematite ($Fe_2O_3$), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and chromite ($FeCr_2O_4$). Electron backscatter diffraction analysis showed that the oxides were present in the following order on the matrix: outer $Fe_2O_3$, intermediate $Fe_3O_4$, and inner $FeCr_2O_4$. After all volatile treatment or oxygenated treatment, a dense protective $Fe_2O_3$ layer was formed on the $Fe_3O_4$ layer of the specimen, retarding further progression of corrosion.
Most parts of facilities in domestic petroleum plants and power plants are needed to be abandoned, repaired or replaced, because in Korea they were built in the 1960s and, they have been used under severe conditions and exposed corrosive environments. 2.25Cr- lMo steels have excellent high-temperature mechanical properties. Therefore, the material have been widely used as heat exchanger tubes, boiler headers and its tubes in such industries. But, those microstructural evolutions in high temperature such as precipitation and carbide coarsening give a reason to degrade the material. Especially, in case of this material, carbides induced embrittlement(CIE) is the primary reason for degrading mechanical properties at over 50$0^{\circ}C$. In this paper, we introduce a electrochemical polarization method for detecting CIE quantitatively.
