  • The touch panel was developed decades ago and has become a popular input device in daily life. Because human-computer interaction is becoming more important, the next generation of touch panels require stretchability and bio-compatibility to allow integration with the human body. However, because most touch panels were developed based on stiff, brittle electrodes, electronic touch panels face difficulties to achieve such requirements. In this paper, for the first time, we demonstrate an ionic touch panel based on polyacrylamide hydrogel containing LiCl ions. The panel is soft and stretchable and thus, can sustain a large deformation. The panel can freely transmit light information through it because the hydrogel is transparent, with 99 % transmittance for visible light. A 1-dimensional touch strip was investigated to reveal the basic mechanism of sensing, and a 2-dimensional touch panel was developed to demonstrate its functionalities. The ionic touch panel was operated under high deformation with more than 1000% areal strain without sacrificing its functionalities. Furthermore, an epidermal touch panel on the skin was developed to demonstrate the mechanical and optical invisibility of the ionic touch panel through writing words, playing the piano and playing games.

  • The quantitative comparison of brain architecture across different subjects requires a common coordinate system, with respect to which the spatial variability of features form different individuals can be expressed. We have developed and implemented an image warping technique which is based on an elastic body deformation. The resulting 2D deformation map can be used to quantify anatomic differences between subjects. The technique's accuracy is tested, by warping 2D magnetic resonance images of age seventies into Talairach atlas.

  • This paper presents a 3D shape optimization algorithm for electromagnetic devices using the design sensitivity analysis with finite element method. The structural deformation analysis based on the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress is used for mesh renewing. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are derived for the 3D finite element method with edge element. The results of sensitivity analysis are used as the input data of the structural analysis to calculate the relocation of the nodal points. This method makes it possible that the new mesh of analysis region can be obtained from the initial mesh without regeneration. The proposed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet pole to net a uniform flux density at the target region.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine quantitatively the relations between the girdle pressures operated on the abdomen and buttock of body according to the increase of time and the displacement or the deformation of thorax, diaphragm, heart and stomark caused. In an erect position, the roentgen photographs of thorax and abdomen were taken on three female subjects (20~21 years old) with eutonic stomach under four different time sequence (0, 3, 6, 9 hours) of the girdle pressure. The displacement and deformation of each viscera were examined by X-ray films thus obtained. The results are as follows: 1. Thorax was not statistically significant according to the increase of time in the girdle pressure. 2. Diaphrame greatly ascended under the increase of time in the girdle pressure after 9 hours, put pressure upon the lung and heart. 3. Heart increased in the height of maximum transverse-diameter, of the left side because of ascending of diaphragm.

  • In the established virtual-reality system, although it is possible to transact a faculty of sensation and graphic in a single PC, virtual object forcibly treated with rigid body for the reason of the huge amount of calculation, and the number of polygon is restricted. Furthermore, there is some difficulty in the financial aspect and a program field, because the existing virtual-reality system needs at least two workstations or super computers. In this study, the new force-reflecting algorithm called as "Proxy" and a finite element method of Hyperion are applied to this system in order to transact in real-time. Consequently, though the number of polygon, which brings about an obstacle is increased in the real-time graphic transaction, this system makes it possible to transact in the real-time, not being influenced by the size of the virtual object.

  • A novel method for 3-dimensional dynamic analysis of marine slender structure gas been developed by using Euler parameters. The Euler parameter rotation, which is being widely used in aerospace vehicle dynamics and multi-body dynamics, has been applied to elastic structure analysis. Large deformation of flexible slender structures is described by means of Euler parameters. Euler parameter method is implemented effectively in incremental-iterative algorithm for 3D dynamic analysis. The normalization constraint of Euler parameters is efficiently satisfied by means of a sequential updating method.

  • In automotive industries the stamping of laser-welded blank gives many merits which bring about dimensional accuracy, strong body assembly and high productivity. However the welding of blanks with different thickness or/and different strength materials introduces many challenging formability problems for process development and tool design. in this paper the deformation characteristics for deep drawing process of laser-welded blank with different thickness sheets are investigated by experiment as well as by FEM simulation. The blank holding force ratio to avoid the movement of weld line was suggested and compared with the experimental result for cylindrical and rectangular cup drawing process. The optimal location of weld line in laser-welded blank with different thickness sheets is calculated to compensate for the movement of weld line on deep drawing process. In addition the effect of location of weld line on formability is clarified using FEM simulation.

  • Thermal deformation of packaging materials was observed in some ready-to-eat food products for microwave use. Therefore, the deformation patterns depending on packaging types and shapes of 9 domestic and 11 foreign products after microwave heating were investigated. Among the domestic and foreign products, thermal deformations of packaging material were observed in 5 and 8 samples, respectively. Besides, thermal deformation occurred on the lid and cup body of tray filled with a spicy chicken sauce after having microwaved where previously no deformation had been observed with other food types. No consistent results of thermal deformation were obtained by the analysis of salinity, brix, pH and viscosity of RTE products for microwave heating. However, thermal deformations of packages were less found in the packages used for the RTE foods contained very high or low viscosity than those with medium viscosity. Furthermore, the degree of thermal deformations was dependent on the food composition and shape as well as package type. In order to prevent the thermal deformation of packaging materials, therefore, technological advances and further studies are required to develop the heat-resistant packaging system and to improve the non-uniformity during microwave heating of RTE foods.

  • Most of studies for the ground load and ground behavior of landing gear have been conducted with an assumption that the structure of landing gear was rigid body. The assumption of rigid body during design process results in many errors or discrepancy. High ground load occurs in 3 directions on the shock absorbing strut during landing. This ground load initiated high structural deformation. In this study, the flex-multi-body dynamics is applied to adapt flexible bodies, so the results of analysis can be described close to landing gears real behaviour.
