  • The performance of track cleaning trains to remove accumulated fine particulate matter in subway tunnels depends on the design of the suction system equipped under the train. To increase the efficiency of the suction system under the cleaning vehicle, this paper proposes a novel dust suction module equipped with both air blowing nozzles and a dust suction structure. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with turbulent flow was conducted to optimize the dust suction system with a particle intake and blowing function. The optimal angle of the air blowing nozzle to maximize the dust removal rate was found to be 6 degrees. The performance of the track cleaning vehicle can be increased by at least 10 percent under an operation speed of 5km/h.

  • The efficiency of railway track cleaning vehicle for eliminating fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in a subway tunnel depends strongly on the structure of the air blowing and suction system installed under the train. To increase the efficiency of underbody suction system, this paper proposes a novel method to use the Coanda effect for the air blower and dust suction module. In particular, through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, the flow control device induced by the Coanda effect enables an increase in the overall flow velocity and to stabilize the flow distribution of the suction module at a control angle of $90^{\circ}$. In addition, the flow velocity drop at the edge of the air knife-type blower can be improved by placing small inserts at the edge of the blower. Those 4 modular designs of the dust suction system can help remove the dust accumulated on the track and tunnel by optimizing the blowing and suction flows.

  • Jet flows applied tangential to a foil surface near the leading and/or trailing edges increase the lift of the foil by delaying the separation also known as the Coanda effects. Many experimental and numerical studies have proven the effectiveness of Coanda effects on circulation control and the effects have been found to be useful in practical application in many aerodynamics fields. Most of the previous works have studied the effects of the jet blowing near the trailing edges and investigated the influence of jet momentum on lift. A few experimental studies, however, focused on the separation bubble that develops near the leading edge and applied jet flow the edge to remove the bubble but only to find decrease in lift. In the present paper, a Coanda foil of 20% thickness ellipse with modified rounded leading and trailing edges was investigated, and the flow around the foil was numerically studied. The blowing around the leading edge only decreased the lift, as the experiments showed, but the suction considerably increased the lift.

  • A numerical simulation on the flow field of a valveless bidirectional piezoelectric micropump has been performed. In this type of micropump, the oscillation of the piezoelectric diaphragm generates the blowing and suction flow through the oblique channel from the pumping chamber. The angle between the oblique and main channel causes the variation of flow distribution through upstream and downstream channels in suction and blowing modes. In the suction flow mode, the working fluid flows from both the upstream and downstream of the main channel to the pumping chamber through the oblique channel. However, in the blowing flow mode, the fluid pushed out of the pumping chamber flows more toward the downstream of the main channel due to the inertia of the fluid. In the present study, the effects of geometries such as the angle of oblique channel and the shape of main channel on the flow rate of the up/downstream were investigated. The flow rate obtained from the pump and the energy required to the pump were also analyzed for various displacements and frequencies of the oscillation of the diaphragm.

  • In Part I, we extended the capability of the Goore Scheme for application to multi-dimensional problems and improved convergence performance. In this paper, we apply the improved Goore Scheme to th e control of turbulence for drag reduction. Direct numerical simulations combined with the control scheme are carried out to simulate a controlled turbulent channel flow at low Reynolds number. The wall blowing and suction is applied through the Goore algorithm using the total drag as feedback. An optimum distribution of the wall blowing and suction in terms of the wall-shear stresses in the spanwise and streamwise directions is sought. The best case reduces drag by more than 20 %.

  • The air suction filter of the power plant decrease the dust and impurities of suction air that reduce the life and efficiency of the boiler. The suction efficiency of the air filter falls with the dust and impurities when the time of use comes to be long. Therefore, the various contaminant of the filter must remove periodically. This paper presents a developed quick exhaust valve to use in the thermo-electric power plant. to removing contaminants on the filter, the blowing is done shortly by air pressure. The Air flowed out to the out side from the inside of the filter. The performance test of the developed valve is done by making a test-bench according to JIS and KS standards. The efficiency is found higher than the existing related valve.

  • In this paper, a technical method for removing the solder from PCBs has been proposed to simplify the pulverizing process and to get higher quality of materials for recycling of the electronic parts in the Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). There are several techniques to remove the solder from PCB, such as physical and chemical method, vibration, suction and blowing and so on. Among them, the suction technique turned out the best method by investigation. In the suction method, there are three variables for removing the solder. They are a temperature of the thermal wire, a velocity of moving PCB and a gap between PCB and thermal wire. To find the optimal variables for the system, an experiment has been conducted by a trial and error method. The optimal variables were found $220^{\circ}C$ of temperature, 11.58mm/s of velocity, 10mm of gap (A gap between suction hole and bottom of PCBs is 5mm). The result of the experiment shows that 50% of the solder were removed.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the flow separation control effects of a blowing jet on an elliptic airfoil at a Reynolds number of 7.84×105 based on the chord length. A blowing jet was obtained by pressing a plenum inside the airfoil and ejecting flow out of a thin jet slot that located in leading edge or trailing edge. The experimental results have shown that the blowing jet had an effect of suppressing the flow separation, resulting in the higher suction pressure distribution and higher normal force. The increase in Cn was more pronounced at higher incidence, whereas the effectiveness of the blowing jet reduced at lower incidences. The leading edge pulsating blowing with 90° was the most effective in controlling the flow separation than other types of blowing jet configuration tested in this research. Moreover, when the pulsating blowing was applied, the stall angle was postponed about 2°-3°. The continuous and pulsating blowing jet is a direct and effective flow separation control for improving the aerodynamic characteristics and performances of airfoil.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the effect of periodic blowing and suction on a turbulent boundary layer. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to probe the characteristics of the flow. The local forcing was introduced to the boundary layer via a sinusoidally-oscillating jet issuing from a thin spanwise slot. Three forcing frequencies (f$^{+}$=0.044, 0.066 and 0.088) with a fixed forcing amplitude (A$^{+}$=0.6) were employed at $Re_{=690. The effect of the forcing angles ($\alpha$=60$^{\circ}$ , 90$^{\circ}$ and 120$^{\circ}$ ) was investigated under the fixed forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088). The PIV results showed that the wall region velocity decreases on imposition of the local forcing. Inspection of phase-averaged velocity profiles revealed that spanwise large-scale vortices were generated in the downstream of the slot and persist further downstream. The highest reduction in skin friction was achieved at highest forcing frequency (f$^{+}$=0.088) and a forcing angle of $\alpha$=120$^{\circ}$. The spatial fraction of the vortices was examined to analyze the skin friction reduction.
