The seasonality of phytoplankton in Dongbok lake was analysed from March to November 2003. The concentrations of TN and TP showed nearly constant level except high concentrations in May at dam site of Dongbok lake. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was highest at dam site in May with 225.3 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$ and high in spring and fall and low in summer at upper and central regions of Dongbok lake. A total of 108 phytoplankton species was identified as an algal flora of Dongbok lake. They were 54 Chlorophyceae, 30 Bacillariophyceae, 12 Cyanophyceae, and 12 species of other taxa. Total cell biomass of phytoplankton showed peaks in May$\sim$June and August$\sim$September, and low biomass in July at dam site. However, upper and central regions of Dongbok lake showed no clear patterns in cell biomass. Maximum biomass was 7,158 cells mL$^{-1}$ at dam site in May with the blooms of Peridinium bipes f. occulatum. The general seasonality of phytoplankton in Dongbok lake was Bacillariophyceae-Dinophyceae/Bacillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae/Chlorophyceae/Bacillariophyceae-Bacillariophyceae in 2003.

Transport of cyanobacterial toxins (microcystin-LR, -RR, -YR) were assessed from a eutrophic lake, Lake Suwa, through the outflowing river, the Tenryu River, and its irrigation channel branch. Temporal variation of phytoplankton species composition in the river coincided with those of the lake; Microcystis ichthyoblabe dominated from June to July, and M. viridis dominated from August to September. When cyanobacterial bloom occurred, microcystins were continuously detected at the concentration of $0.3{\sim}3.2\;{\mu}g/l$ even at 32 km downstream. The change of the content of three microcystin variants were related both with the total cell density of Microcystis and with the change of Microcystis species composition. When Microcystis ichthyoblabe dominated during July, only microcystin-RR (MC-RR) and -LR (MC-LR) were detected, while when Microcystis viridis dominated between August and October, microcystin-RR,-YR (MC -YR) and -LR were detected. Along 29 km flowing distance (flow time 11 hours) between site 2 and site 5 in the Tenryu River, cyanobacterial density and microcystin concentration were reduced by 73% and 72%, respectively, which is mostly contributed by the dilution effect of tributary waters (61% and 57%, respectively) . In the artificial irrigation channel microcystins and cyanobacterial cells were decreased less than in the natural river. The results indicate that cyanobacterial toxins can be transported far downstream without much removal and give hazards to water usage in downstream of eutrophic lakes with cyanobacterial blooms.
In this study, an algal fence was developed and applied to reduce the input of algal scum into the water intake facility. The effectiveness of vertical algal fences(overlapped three types of meshes, (312 ${\mu}m$${\times}$ 375 ${\mu}m$, 390 ${\mu}m$${\times}$ 450 ${\mu}m$, and 0,7 cm ${\times}$ 1cm; vertical depth, 1.5 m; length of fence, about 120 m)) was experimentally tested at a water intake facility (Mulgum, lower Nakdong River). The application of the fence resulted in the statistically significant difference of algal biomass between inside and outside of the fence. According to ANOVA test, chi. a concentration in Day-1showed large difference at each depth of 0, 1, 2 m (0.001> p at each depth, n = 16 respectively). Especially large difference was observed at 0 and 1 m depth. However, the fence was only effective for a short period and its efficiency declined by Day-5after the installation. When better maintenance options for the fence are prepared, e.g. mechanical installation and periodic backwashing of the fence, the performance of algal fence may be sustained. In addition, reliable models for bloom prediction are required to provide an advanced indication of the optimal timing for the installation so that effective operation would be achieved.

In sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) growing there are several severe problem which have to be overcome to produce highly graded fruits because of fruit rots and fruit crackings, if there is frequent precipitation during immature fruit step and picking season. In order to reduce fungicide sprayings and produce qualified fruits in areas with rainy season like as South Korea, rain-sheltered growing is necessary absolutely. Sweet cherry blooms early to medium April in southern area of South Korea. If we depend on honeybees (Apis mellifera) distributed in natural ecosystem, it is not easy to get normal fruit-set every season because of low temperature around blooming time. And also bee keepers seldom sell honeybee hives as a pollinator during spring, instead they keep honeybee hives to get honey. Recently use of B. terrestris as a pollinator of cherry tomato, oriental pumpkin etc. grown in protected cultivation system increase abundantly. Therefore, in this study we studied B. terrestris as an alternate of honeybee to pollinate sweet cherry grown in rain shelter. In part of foraging activity B. terrestris shows staying on a cherry flower for about six second and visiting frequency of 11 flowers per minute. However A. mellifera stayed about 15 second on a flower and visited 4~5 flowers per minute. There were no significant difference in fruit-setting rate and fruit characteristics after using B. terrestris and A. mellifera as pollinators of sweet cherry. Consequently there is no negative effect when we use B. terrestris as an alternate pollinator of A. mellifera in sweet cherry cultivation under rain shelter.

Nakdong River Estuary is affected by the dam, barrage construction and dredge and reclaim worked artificially. So, we have studied the area input both freshwater and sea water to understand marine environment of Nakdong River estuary related to the effect of artificial work from 2013 to 2015. As a result, The discharge flow to the estuary remarkably decreased before barrage construction and the average of salinity at the estuary increased. So, the brackish water zone reduced under the influence of decreased discharge flow. The major sources of nitrate and silicate were freshwater, phosphate supplied from bottom and the open sea water. The concentration of phosphate and dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased remarkably in spring and summer. we investigated that phosphate in freshwater was removed under the influence of the estuary dam and phosphate in sea water was removed under the influence of phytoplankton. The low concentration of DO was due to decomposition of the organic compound by microorganism after phytoplankton blooms. Generally, the concentrations of chlorophyll-a in summer was higher than spring and fall. Therefore, the change of ecosystem in Nakdong river estuary was due to decrease of freshwater influx, the other change is facing because of the barrage.

A number of algal bloom models (red-tide models) have been developed and applied to simulate the redtide growth and decline patterns as the interest on the phytoplankton blooms has been continuously increased. The quantitative error analysis of the model is of great importance because the accurate prediction of the red-tide occurrence and transport pattern can be used to setup the effective mitigations and counter-measures on the coastal ecosystem, aquaculture and fisheries damages. The word "red-tide model" is widely used without any clear definitions and references. It makes the comparative evaluation of the ecological models difficult and confusable. It is highly required to do the performance test of the red-tide models based on the suitable classification and appropriate error analysis because model structures are different even though the same/similar words (e.g., red-tide, algal bloom, phytoplankton growth, ecological or ecosystem models) are used. Thus, the references on the model classification are suggested and the advantage and disadvantage of the models are also suggested. The processes and methods on the performance test (quantitative error analysis) are recommend to the practical use of the red-tide model in the coastal seas. It is suggested in each stage of the modeling procedures, such as verification, calibration, validation, and application steps. These suggested references and methods can be attributed to the effective/efficient marine policy decision and the coastal ecosystem management plan setup considering the red-tide and/or ecological models uncertainty.
Spatial-temporal variations in physiochemical water qualities (temperature, salinity, DO, SPM, POC and nutrients) of surface and bottom waters were investigated along the mid-western coastal area (Taean Peninsula to Gomso Bay) of Korea. Spatial distribution patterns of temperature and salinity were mostly controlled by the physical mixing process of freshwater from Geum River and/or Gyunggi Bay with nearby coastal water. A strong tidal front is formed off Taean Peninsula during spring and summer. Seasonal variations in nutrient concentrations, lower in spring and summer and higher in fall and winter, are primarily regulated by magnitude of phytoplankton occurrence rather than freshwater loadings into the bay. Based on seasonal and spatial variability of physicochemical parameters, water quality of the study area can be divided into four water masses; Gyunggi Bay-influenced Water Mass (GBWM), Geum River-influenced Water Mass (GRWM), Yellow Sea Bottom Cold Water Mass (YSBCWM) and Cheonsu Bay Water Mass (CBWM). Water quality of the GBWM (Taean Peninsula coastal area), which has relatively low salinity and high concentrations of nutrients, is strongly controlled by the Gyunggi Bay coastal water, which is under influence of the Han River freshwater. In this water mass, the mixed layer is always developed by strong tidal mixing. As a result, a tidal front is formed along the offshore boundary of the mixed layer. Such tidal fronts probably play an important role in the distribution of phytoplankton communities, SPM and nutrients. The GRWM, with low salinity and high nutrients, especially during the flood summer season, is closely related to physiochemical properties of the Geum River. During the flood season, nutrient-enriched Geum River water mass extends up to 60 km away from the river mouth, potentially causing serious environmental problems such as eutrophication and unusual and/or noxious algal blooms. Offshore (<$30{\sim}40m$ in water depth) of the study area, YSBCWM coupled with a strong thermocline can be identified in spring-summer periods, exhibiting abundant nutrients in association with low temperature and limited biological activity. During spring and summer, a tidal front is formed in a transition zone between the coastal water mass and bottom cold water mass in the Yellow Sea, resulting in intensified upwelling and thereby supplying abundant nutrients to the GBWM and GRWM. Such cold bottom water mass and tidal front formation seems to play an important role in controlling water quality and further regulating physical ecosystem processes along mid-western Korean coastal area.
In order to diagnose the water environment and assess the water quality restoration, long term trend of water environment has been surveyed at 3-R stations from 1994 to 1999 in Lake Shihwa. Annual mean values of $COD_{Mn}$, Chlorophyll a, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and Secchi depth are ranged in 5.2-15.1 mg/L, 7.3-14R.1 jlg/L, 1.50-4.84 mgN/L, 0.055-0.281 mgP/L and 0.5 -1.4 m, respectively, during the study periods. Carson's trophic state indeies were varied from mesotrophy in 1994 and 1995, hyper-eutrophy in 1996 and 1997, to meso eutrophy in 199R and 1999. After dike construction, water quality were rapidly deteriorated by allochthonous and autochthonous loading of high nutrients and organic carbon. Eutrophication phenomena were characterized by massive phytoplankton blooms and high concentration of COD. However, after onset of restoration program, lake water quality was rapidly restored to the level of just after sea-dike construction. The diversion of waste water inflowing from the Panwol and the Sihwa industrial districts which was started from March, 1997 has contributed to improve water quality in the surface layer. And the tidal mixing (sea water inflowing) through the continuous gate operation was the most effective measure to the whole lake restoration.ration.
We investigated the seasonal succession of phytoplankton assemblages in the eastern part of the South Sea of Korea in relation to surface water masses. The study areas are under the direct influence of the Tsushima Warm Current (TCW) throughout the whole year, with its strength known to be seasonally variable. The region is also influenced by coastal waters (CW) driven from the South Sea of Korea and East China Sea, particularly in summer, as indicated by low salinity in the surface water. Nutrient property of the TCW can reveals whether the origin of the TCW is the nutrient-rich Kuroshio Current or the oligotropic Taiwan Warm Current. Surface chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentrations displayed a large seasonal variation for all stations, with high values found in spring and autumn and low values in summer and winter. At station M (offshore) and P (intermediate location between M and R), Chl-a concentrations in October were higher than those in March, when spring bloom normally occurs. This may be related to deeper mixed layer depths in October. Diatoms dominated under conditions of high nutrient supply in which Chaetoceros spp. and Skeletonema costatum-like spp. were abundant. S. costatum-like spp. dominated at stations R (onshore station) and P in December when there was greater nutrient supply, especially of phosphate. Flagellates and dinoflagellates dominated at all three stations after diatoms blooms. Dominant species were Scrippsiella trochoid in April and Ceratium furca in October at station R, and Gyrodinium spp. and Gymnodinium spp. at station M during summer, when the effect of the oligotropic Taiwan Warm Current and the oligotropic coastal water from East China Sea were strong. Redundancy analysis showed clear seasonal successions in the phytoplankton community and environmental conditions, in which both principal components 1 and 2 accounted for 69.6% of total variance. Our results suggested that environmental conditions seemed to be determined by the origin of the TCW and the relative seasonal strength of the water masses of the TCW and CW, which may affect phytoplankton growth and compositions in the study area.

On-site Algae Collecting System (OACS) is one of urgent countermeasures to clean the raw water when the algae blooms severely. Rapid reaction capability, high efficiency and large capacity are required when applying OACS to large water areas. The total performance of OACS are always determined by unit process named Flotation, Trapping and Collection. The working efficiency and daily treatment quantity of OACS can be increased when it runs automatically. As the rapid development of OACS technology, in the first place, equipment are miniaturized and simple. And in the second place, automation process from Trapping to Collection are advanced. So, They produce results higher working efficiency, smaller residual sludge on treated water, system's advanced environmental friendly features and the increased amount of sludge by Collection process to achieve large capacity. Now OACS has overcome the algae multiplication rate to ensured the amount of removal algae. In another aspect, it is high economically feasible because of reducing operation cost against the large capacity.
