  • Recently, as the design of a system gets larger and more complex, functional verification method based on system-level becomes more important. The verification of a functional block mainly uses BFM(bus functional model). The larger the burden on functional verification is, the more the importance of configuring a proper verification environment increases rapidly. SystemVerilog unifies hardware design languages and verification languages in the form of extensions to the Veri log HDL. The processing of design description, function simulation and verification using same language has many advantages in system development. In this paper, we design DUT that is composed of AMBA bus and function blocks using SystemVerilog and verify the function of DUT in verification environment using layered testbench. Adaptive FIR filter and Booth's multiplier are chosen as function blocks. We confirm that verification environment can be reused through a minor adaptation of interface to verify functions of other DUT.

  • The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has been rampant since the end of 2019, has evidently affected pain management in clinical practice. Fortunately, a COVID-19 vaccination program is currently in progress worldwide. There is an ongoing discussion that pain management using steroid injections can decrease COVID-19 vaccine efficacy, although currently there is no direct evidence to support this statement. As such, the feeling of pain in patients is doubled in addition to the co-existing ill-effects of social isolation associated with the pandemic. Thus, in the COVID-19 era, it has become necessary that physicians be able to provide high quality pain management without negatively impacting COVID-19 vaccine efficacy. Steroids can alter the entire process involved in the generation of adaptive immunity after vaccination. The period of hypophysis-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression is known to be 1 to 4 weeks after steroid injection, and although the exact timing for peak efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines is slightly different for each vaccine, the average is approximately 2 weeks. It is suggested to avoid steroid injections for a total of 4 weeks (1 week before and after the two vaccine doses) for the double-shot vaccines, and for 2 weeks in total (1 week before and after vaccination) for a single-shot vaccine. This review focuses on the basic concepts of the various COVID-19 vaccines, the effect of steroid injections on vaccine efficacy, and suggestions regarding an appropriate interval between the administration of steroid injections and the COVID-19 vaccine.

  • Flash memory has been widely used as an important storage device for consumer electronics. For the flash memory-based storage systems, FTL (Flash Translation Layer) is used to handle the mapping between a logical page address and a physical page address. Especially, log buffer-based FTLs provide a good performance with small-sized mapping information. In designing the log buffer-based FTL, one important factor is to determine the mapping structure between data blocks and log blocks, called associativity. While previous works use static associativity fixed at the design time, we propose a new log block mapping scheme which adjusts associativity based on the run-time workload. Our proposed scheme improves the I/O performance about 5~16% compared to the static scheme by adjusting the associativity to provide the best performance.

  • We develop the signal processing method for adaptive implementing direction of signal and the frequency sensitivity of human visual system(HVS). Existing multibnad energy scaling method makes ringing artifact because it does not consider signal direction. To solve this problem, we use block gradient for signal direction in addition to existing method. And we use the fact that frequency component of signal is more sensitive than value of signal over human eyes. we enhance the signal according to contrast sensitivity function(CSF) which is the model of frequency sensitivity of human eye. Compared that the existing analysis models only improve the efficiencies in the existing systems, the developed method can process the image signals to be more desirable and suitable to HVS.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient inter and intra prediction algorithms for fast encoding of H.264/AVC. First, inter prediction mode decision method decides early using temporal/spatial correlation information and pixel direction information. Second, intra prediction mode decision method selects block size judging smoothness degree with inner/outer pixel value variation and decides prediction mode using representative pixel and reference pixel. Lastly, adaptive motion search region restriction sets search region using mode information of neighboring block and predicted motion vector. The experimental results show that proposed method can achieve about 18~53% reduction compared with the existing JM 14.1 in the encoding time. In RD performance, the proposed method does not cause significant PSNR value losses while increasing bitrates slightly.

  • In this paper, an adaptive cosine transform coding scheme which incorporate human visual properties into the coding scheme is investigated. Human vision is relatively sensitive to mid-frequency band, and insensitive to very low and very high frequency band. These property was mathematically modelled with MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) through many psychovisual experiment. DCT transforms energy in spatial domain into frequency domain, so can exploit the MTF very efficiently. Another well-known visual characteristics is spatial masking effect that visibility of noise is less in regions of high activity than in regions of low activity. Proposed coding scheme imploys quantization matrix which represent the properties of these spatial frequency response of human vision, and adaptively quality of an image. To compute the activity index of an image block, simple operation is performed in spatial domain, and according to activity index. block of low activity region is more exactly quantized relatively than that of high activity region. Results showed that, at low bit rate, the subjective quality of the reconstructed images by proposed coding scheme is acceptible than that of coding scheme without HVS properties.

  • The noise caused by a variety of reasons worsens the quality of input image when we use the images reproducing device. The basic difficulty to solve this problem is that the noise and the signal are difficult to be distinguished. Contrast enhancement such as unsharp masking is one of the most important procedures to improve the quality of input images. The conventional unsharp masking enhances the images by adding their amplified high frequency components. The noise component of the input images, however, also tends to be amplified due to the nature of the unsharp masking. This paper considers the block approach for detecting niose and image feature of the input image so that the unsharp masking could be adaptively applied accordingly. Simulation results show that it is made possible to enhance contrast of the image without boosting up the noisy components by applying the proposed algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm for interlaced-to-progressive conversion by the weighted summation of the information collected from spatial do-interlacing method, in which the weighted edge based line average is applied, and the temporal method in which the motion compensation is employed by using hi-directional BMA (block matching algorithm). We employed time-recursive and motion adaptive processing as motion detection is involved. Also, a median filter is used to deal with limitation of the linear summation in which only an intermediate of values being involved is determined. The main goal of the approach is to overcome the shortcomings of each of the do-interlacing techniques without significant increment of the computational complexity, and the proposed method is apt to implement in hardware for real-time processing.

  • VVC (Versatile Video Coding) is a new video compression technique that is being standardized, and it supports HD / UHD / 8K video, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video with a goal of approximately 2 times higher coding efficiency than the conventional HEVC. It also aims to support a variety of functionalities such as screen content coding, adaptive resolution changes, and independent sub-pictures. In this paper, we investigate the signaling process of intra prediction mode first, and develop an effective coding method of the chroma intra prediction mode. In case of the DM mode, the proposed method simplifies the prediction mode of the chorma intra prediction mode when referring to the angular mode of the luminance block. It can improve coding efficiency of the chroma intra prediction mode, and the proposed process can also consider the size of the block in order to further improve its coding efficiency.

  • Quadtree-based terrain visualization methods have been used in a lot of applications. However, because most procedures are performed on the CPU, the rendering speed is slow in comparison to methods using GPU. In this paper, we present a quadtree-based terrain visualization method working on the GPU with specially designed data structure, error-texture and LOD-texture, and block-based acceleration method. In preprocessing step, we calculate errors in world space and store them to error-texture. In rendering step, we examine projected errors of error-texture and choose the detail level, then store the projected errors to LOD-texture. View frustum culling is performed as block unit using the values of error-texture and LOD-texture. This method reduces CPU load and performs time consuming jobs such as LOD selection and view frustum culling.
