  • Objectives : Trauma patients have attentional bias which enforces traumatic memories and causes cognitive errors. Understanding of such selective attention may explain many aspects of the posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) symptoms. Methods : We used the rapid serial visual presentation(RSVP) method to verify attentional blink in burn patients with PTSD. International affective picture system(IAPS) was used as stimuli and distracters. In the 'neutral test', patients have been presented series of pictures with human face picture as target stimuli. Each picture had 100ms interval. However the distance between target facial pictures was randomized and recognition of second facial picture accuracy was measured. In the 'stress test', the first target was stress picture which arouses patient emotions instead of the facial picture. Neutral and Stress tests were done with seven PTSD patients and 20 controls. In '85ms test' the interval was reduced to 85ms. The accuracy of recognition of second target facial picture was rated in all three tests. Eighty-five ms study was done with eighteen PTSD patients. Results : Attentional blinks were observed in 100-400ms of RSVP. PTSD patients showed increased recognition rate in the 'stress test' compared with the 'neutral test'. When presentation interval was decreased to 85 ms, PTSD patient showed decrease of attentional blink effect when target facial picture interval was 170ms. Conclusion : We found attentional blink effect could be affected by stress stimulus in burn patients. And attentional blink may be affected by stimulus interval and the character of stimulus. There may be some other specific mechanism related with selective attention in attentional blink especially with facial picture processing.

  • This paper presents the method for the decision of eye states using the eye blink in video sequences. The entire procedure consists of two steps: in the first step, the accurate eye position is found in the input image by using symmetry information of faces and projection, and in the second step, the eye open/close state is decided by the horizontal and vertical projection. The method in this paper is also used for detecting drivers' fatigue in the drowsiness detection system.

  • In this study, we developed the drowziness prevention system to detect the driver's drowziness and relieve the driver. A computer vision method was proposed to detect the driver's drowziness. We extracted the eyes and mouth in the face image and tracked the positions from the image sequencies in real time. The eye blink duration and yawning was used as the parameters of drowziness. Wehn the drowziness state of a driver is detected, the driver is refreshed by the scent generator and the alarm. Also, the driver's bio-signal is acquired and analysed the vigilance state.

  • There have been numerous modalities to recover blink function of orbicularis oculi muscle in patients with facial paralysis. However, there is still no optimal method for reanimation of eyelid. In this study, we tried to recover blink function of paralyzed rabbit's eyelid with the ion polymer metal composite (IPMC) which is one of the electroactive polymers that is spotlighted as artificial muscle. We manufactured IPMC by plating the platinum over perfluorosulphonic acid polymer ($Nafion^{(R)}$). IPMC was coated by Norland optical adhesive for the purpose of insulation and keeping it from dry. IPMC modifications by roughening the surface of Nafion, repetitive plating (maximum 4 times) with platinum, and lengthening the width of IPMC were done. The facial paralysis was induced in the rabbit by sectioning of facial nerve at the main trunk. After minimum period of 4 weeks, IPMC was inserted in the paralyzed rabbit's eyelid. By modification, the force generated by IPMC was enhanced. Restoration of blink function in paralyzed rabbit was achieved on electrical stimulation of the IPMC by 5 voltage direct current. IPMC can be promising option for facial reanimation, but further studies are needed to enhance the efficiency of IPMC.

  • This paper describes the relationship between skin impedance signal, behavioral signal, and subjective evaluation depending on arousal level. Nz and reaction time had similar trend with mKSS level, but eyeblink rate was different from these two parameters. eye-blink rate increased slowly from mKSS level 1 to 5, and had high increasing rate at mKSS 7. But it showed steep descent at mKSS level 9. Each subject showed different eye-blink rates, but changing rates of EBR was similar at eachm KSS level. Therefore it suggests that rising rate of EBR can be used arousal level criterion. From the result of reaction time test. human performance was decreased rapidly above the mKSS level 5, and false positive and false negative data was observed above the mKSS level 3. It is desirable to give a subject some stimuli such as sound or aroma to rise arousal level between mKSS level 3 and mKSS level 5.

  • In this paper, we propose a wearable augmented reality system using gaze interaction. Gaze interaction has been considered to be the potential of easy, natural and fast way of interaction and becomes a suitable way in optical see-through HMD based wearable AR. Our system recognizes user's gaze point, half blink motion and displays the information of object seen by user to HMD. Half blink selection technique avoids the Midas touch problem and represents user's intention correctly. We've developed a AR annotation system and estimated the usability of gaze interaction. The accuracy and robustness of our technique is verified on the experimental results.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the accommodative facility, blink rate and accommodative lag according to the change of angles of main viewpoint of near distance worker and study an appropriate viewing angle that mitigates asthenopia, such as headaches or eye fatigue accompanied when reading and staring at the computer or TV for a long time. Methods: Total of 27 people including 12 male university students and 15 female university students in the age of 20 to 36 with frequent near distance works, such as computers, were selected to study the accommodative facility, the blink rate and the accommodative lag in accordance with the change of viewing angles of the near distance workers. The refraction error was corrected completely and the phoropter was shifted to near distance mode to locate the near distance indication at 40 cm. The accommodative facility and the blink rate were measured for one minute at each viewing direction of $40^{\circ}$ downward, $20^{\circ}$ downward, horizontal, and $20^{\circ}$ upward directions based on the horizontal line and the accommodative lag was measured in dynamic retinoscopy using retinoscope. Results: As a result, when the main viewpoint was moved on upper direction from the $40^{\circ}$ below, the accommodative facility was reduced and the blink rate and the accommodative lag were increased so their eyes became dry and the accommodation response was reduced. Conclusions: In near distance works, the eye fatigue level can be minimized by locating a book or a computer screen $40^{\circ}$ below than the horizontal direction.

  • Several studies of eye-slaved nonverbal communicators have been performed recently. By integrating the eye and head-position monitoring devices, the present authors had developed an eye-controlled human/computer interface based on the line-of-sight and an intentional blink to invoke commands in the preceeding study. As a successive study, this paper examines the characteristics of performing the intentional double blinks experimentally and proposes the double blinks as an alternative triggering method. The applications may extend to several domains such as rehabilitation and virtual reality system with head mounted display.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope a computer mouse using the head movements and eye blink in order to help the disability persons who can't move the hands or foot because of car accident or cerebral apoplexy. The mouse is composed of two gyro-sensors and photo sensor. The gryo-sensors detect the head horizontal and vertical angular velocities, respectively. The photo sensor detect the eye blink to perform click, double click, and to reset the head position. In the results, we could control the mouse points in real time using the proposed system.

  • Trigeminal sensory neuropathy is a clinical diagnosis in which the main feature is facial numbness limited to territory of one or more sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve. We describe a 46-year-old woman who presented with left facial numbness in the territories of maxillary nerve and mandibular nerve. MRI disclosed a lesion in left trigeminal nerve root entry zone. In Blink test stimulating infraorbital foramen, ipsilateral R1 was delayed compared with contralateral R1. Lesion in pons or medulla can present as trigeminal sensory neuropathy.
