  • One of the critical issues in the coating specification is the allowable limit of surface contaminant(s) - such as soluble salt(s), grit dust, and rust - after grit blasting. Yet, there is no universally accepted data supporting the relationship between the long-term coating performance and the amount of various surface contaminants allowed after grit blasting. In this study, it was attempted to prepare epoxy coatings applied on grit-blasted steel substrate dosed with controlled amount of surface contaminants - such as soluble salt(s), grit dust, and rust. Then, coating samples were subjected to 4,200 hours of cyclic test(NORSOK M-501), which were then evaluated in terms of resistance to rust creepage, blistering, chalking, rusting, cracking and adhesion strength. Additional investigations on the possible damage at the paint/steel interface were carried out using an Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS) and observations of under-film-corrosion. Test results suggested that the current industrial specifications were well matched with the allowable degree of rust, whereas the allowable amount of soluble salt and grit dust after grit blasting showed a certain deviation from the specifications currently employed for fabrication of marine vessels and offshore facilities.

  • The determination of the effectiveness of the immobilization of blasting dust (waste generated in galvanic activities) in cement matrix, as well of mechanical, physical and microstructural properties of concrete paving blocks produced with partial replacement of cement was the objective of this work. The results showed that blasting dust has high percentage of silica in the composition and very fine particle size, characteristics that qualify it for replacement of cement in manufacturing concrete blocks. The replacement of Portland cement by up to 5% residues did not cause a significant loss in compressive strength nor increase in water absorption of the blocks. Chemical tests indicated that there is no problem of leaching or solubilization of contaminants to the environment during the useful life of the concrete blocks, since the solidification/stabilization process led to the immobilization of waste in the cement mass. Therefore, the use of blasting dust in the manufacture of concrete paving blocks is promising, thus being not only an alternative for proper disposal of such waste as well as a possibility of saving raw materials used in the construction industry.

  • With the recent industrial developments and economic development nationally, there has been a rapidly increasing demand for the use of underground space as locations for establishing social infrastructure and various convenience facilities. In this study, a mist-control system was developed to reduce the generation of dust in underground blasting. To enhance the dust-reduction effect, a guiding device was developed which is capable of adjusting the direction of the spray toward's the blasting face of mine or tunnel. A numerical analysis was performed by using the AUTODYN software, and results were compared with those published in basic experiments. To verify the mist-diffusion effect according to the position of explosives in a water bag, numerical analyses were conducted for the following cases: Explosives were set in the middle, and in the bottom of the water bag. The optimum condition was external detonation and center charge. The mist particle size from the result was suitable for the reduction of dust after blasting in underground mine and tunnel.

  • This research was aimed to figure out the trend of dust diffusion at open pit limestone mine for assessing the environmental impacts on the high voltage power transmission line. It is rather easy to assess the dust generation and size distribution of limestone dust at the blasting site, but it is very hard to assess the expected area of dust diffusion and amount of dust fall by the distances from the dust source. In this research, a 3-dimensional fluid dynamic simulation software (3D-Flow) was used for analysing the above mentioned matters to assess the impacts to the insulators on the transmission tower by the blasting dust. It was verfied that the 3D-Flow is reliable tool for simulating dust movement, and the limestone dust is not much hazardous to the power transmission line.

  • To find out the characteristics and trend of dust fall in open cut limestone mine in-situ measurement and wind tunnel tests were carried out. In-siti measurement was done by two dust fall samplers at the Halls mine for 60 days. The laboratory test was done in the 100m long temporary wind tunnel installed at the yard of the institute. The most of dust falled within 25m form the dust source and only less than 0.5% defused up to over 100 meters. It was known that the dust fall at 100m away from souces were negligible.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate quartz concentrations in airborne total and respirable dusts. Materials: Respirable dust samples were collected using a 10 mm aluminum cyclone equipped with a 37 mm$5{\mu}m$ pore size PVC filter. Total dust samples were collected with a three stage cassette from three work sections at earthwork sites located in the South Chungcheong-do Province area. Results: The geometric means of quartz concentrations were $0.008mg/m^3$ and $0.004mg/m^3$ in total dust and respirable dust, respectively. The geometric means of quartz contents analyzed by FTIR were 3.74% in total dust and 3.16% in respirable dust. The geometric mean of quartz concentrations and contents in secondary blasting operations were higher than those in other operations. Conclusions: Given that secondary blasting operations had higher quartz concentrations, there is a need to reduce respirable dust, such as through wet operations.

  • The materials of ship screw propeller are commonly the manganese bronze. The seawater corrosion and cavitation of the screw propeller reduce tire propulsive performance of ship. In screw manufactory, tire corrosion rust of tire screw propeller is removed by a hand grinding. The grinding work makes the dust of the heavy metals from the manganese bronze. The dust makes indoor working environment poor. A friendly-environmental and automatic corrosion removing apparatus was developed for the improvement of screw processing and working environment. The corrosion rust of a screw propeller was remarkably removed by using apparatus. And the screw surface roughness was improved by a blasting effect of the apparatus performance test. Anode polarization curves on jour processing conditions, that is to say, grinding, blasting, wire-brushing, fine sand papering, were confirmed by a potentiostat. Especially, two kinds of medias, alumina and emery, were used in the blasting processing. Then, investigated tire cavitation erosion of specimen. This result proved that tire blasting work has considerably improved the corrosion resistance of a screw propeller.

  • The materials used in a ship screw propeller are commonly made with brass. The seawater corrosion and seawater cavitation of the screw propeller reduces the propulsive performance of the ship. In screw manufacturing, the corrosion rust of the screw propeller is removed through a hand grinding method. The grinding process produces dust of the heavy metals from the brass. The dust creates a poor working environment that is harmful to the health of the workers. An automatic corrosionrust removing apparatus, using a blasting method, was developed for the improvement of screw polishing conditions and its working environment. The performance of this apparatus was investigated by surface roughness, weight loss rate, hardness, electrochemical corrosion resistance, and cavitation erosion, after removing of the corrosion rust under various blasting conditions. Two medias of alumina and emery were used in this experiment. The surface roughness and hardness of the screw were improved by this apparatus. The electrochemical corrosion potential (Ecorr) and current density (Icorr) were measured by the dynamic polarization method, using a potentiostat, under the conditions of surface polishing with grinding, blasting, wire brushing, and fine sand papering. The test results prove that the new corrosion rust-removing apparatus improves the surface performance of a screw propeller.

  • It Is indispensible to cause vibration, noise and dust to blasting and breaker operations. Since the control of these factors is supposed to be extremely difficult, the claim of compensation for material and mental damages are getting increased. Economically feasible blasting operation with controlling vibration and noise can be achieved by establishment of science-based plan, accurate operation and responsible inspection, and the application of efficient management system. It must also be remarked that the relevant applied without prejudice by the operator, and the law and regulation should be applied without prejudice by the authority concerned. In addition, the public claim against operators should be investigated in detail and the prosecution should be made under the careful onside-ration of scientific and reasonable conception. Finally, it is strongly suggested that the operations, public and authorities should make great efforts to develop higher technology in order to expand our construction market, to overseas.

  • As in Korean environments with mountainous and hilly areas, the rock generally has to be removed in construction or civil engineering work in tunnelling or excavation for development in urban area. Explosives should be used for blasting, which may cause serious problems on local people for their claim for compensation due to ground vibration, noise. For safe and economic blasting, geology and engineering characteristics of rocks such as discontinuities of rock or weathering are very important factors, together with site characteristics for prediction of ground vibration. In this study, conducted were the detailed study for major rocks most widely distributed in the South-east area, in-situ geological survey, geological and geochemical analysis, and further laboratory uniaxial rock stress, seismic velocity of core samples together with in-situ seismic velocity measurements. Regulations on ground vibration and noise were reviewed for assessing their adaptabilities, and a total of 4,856 measured blasting vibration data were examined for enhancing the confidence level in estimating the predictive formulation using scaled distance statistically.
