  • Artillery gun tube experiences very high pressure according to the blast of propellant charge. Therfore, it is essential to guarantee the structural safety of the gun tube. On the other hand, weight reduction of gun tube is also a crucial design factor since the agility of artillery vehicle directly leads to its survivability. In this line of thought, this work proposed an efficient design procedure which utilizes the convex combination of breech pressure and projectile base pressure time histories. Its efficiency is verified by comparing with other procedures. Other procedures utilize different computed max pressure rather than the convex combination design pressure. Additionally, a transient analysis is carried out considering the projectile movement and the corresponding pressure distribution through the newly developed ABAQUS user-subroutine. The analysis confirms the structural safety of the lightweight gun tube designed by the proposed method.

  • Air deck charge blast methods have been applied to improve the fragmentation in open cut bench blastings for mining developments. However, during large scale bench blasting operations, there exist some problems such as boulder productions due to explosive charge concentration. Especially, in case of lime stone mining, when air deck method is applied, there has been unintentionally concentrated on charging because the inside holes are often broken by erosion and decomposition. In this study, compared with general blasting, air deck blasting has been focused in lime stone mining. In other to maximize its efficiency, inside hole was examined by endoscope in advance and deck charge using air tube was applied to the section in which concentration might be taken place. Blasting efficiency, fragmentation, charging reduction rate, and total working hours (from charging to blasting) were the main object for comparing, and as a result, air deck was more efficient then the general blasting in all aspects except total working hours.

  • Laser Propulsion is a device that generates thrust using laser energy. Laser-driven In-Tube Accelerator (LITA) has been developed at Tohoku University. LITA is a laser propulsion system that accelerates an object not in an open air but in a tube. Experiments of vertical launching and pressure measurement on the tube wall were carried out and in order to observe the initial state of plasma and blast wave, the visualization experiment was carried out using the shadowgraph method. In this study, the time variation of pressure on the tube wall is numerically simulated solving Euler equation. In order to model the laser energy, heat source function added to the frozen flow Euler equation. Plasma size from the shadowgraph images was used for the initial condition of laser energy input. For verification of the modeling, these results were compared with the previous experimental and numerical results. From these verifications, an analysis of LITA performance will be investigated.

  • Ultrasonic testing method has been developed to evaluate flaw of adhesive layers in blast tube for the reliability of the rocket nozzle. The ultrasonic reflection from the interface between the steel sheet and the epoxy adhesive is measured with a high-frequency Pulse-echo setup in order to identify contact debonding and missing adhesive in epoxy layer between steel and FRP layers. The steel sheet is resonated by low-frequency ultrasound, and the gap size underneath the measuring location is estimated from the resonance responses. For practical application in industry an automated testing system has been developed where the proposed approach is implemented. The performance of the proposed approach has been verified by actual measurement of gap sizes from the cross-sections of cut specimens using an optical microscope.

  • A separate heat pipe system capacity of 3,700kW has been developed and applied to preheating the blast furnace gas for recovery of the waste heat from boiler. The system is designed to preheat the blast furnace gas up to $126^{\circ}C$ by using tho boiler exhaust gas of which temperature is $180^{\circ}C{\sim}220^{\circ}C$. The arrangement of the fin tubes as well as the shape of the fin has been carefully determined to minimize the fouling problems. The heat pipe system was found to be stable in circulation of the working fluid and the range of the temperature variation of the preheated blast furnace gas was within $10^{\circ}C$. It was proved through a long-term test that the selected tube arrangement and the shape of the fins are proper to prevent the fouling problems and that the pay-back period of the system Is within one year.

  • A projectile that passes through a shock wave experiences drastic changes in the aerodynamic forces. These sudden changes in the forces are attributed to the wave structures produced by the projectile-shock wave interaction. A computational study using moving grid method is performed to analyze the effect of the projectile-shock wave interaction. Cylindrical and conical projectiles have been employed to study such interactions. This sort of unsteady interaction normally takes place in overtaking blast flow fields. It is found that the overall effect of overtaking a blast wave on the unsteady aerodynamic characteristics is hardly affected by the projectile configurations. However, it is noticed that the projectile configurations do affect the unsteady flow structures and hence the drag coefficient for the conical projectile shows considerable variation from that of the cylindrical projectile. The projectile aerodynamic characteristics, when it interacts with the secondary shock wave, are analyzed. It is also observed that the change in the characteristics of the secondary shock wave during the interaction is different for different projectile configurations.

  • A projectile when passes through a moving shock wave, experiences drastic changes in the aerodynamic forces as it moves from a high-pressure region to a low pressure region. These sudden changes in the forces are attributed to the wave structures produced by the projectile-flow field interaction, and are responsible for destabilizing the trajectory of the projectile. These flow fields are usually encountered in the vicinity of the launch tube exit of a ballistic range facility, thrusters, retro-rocket firings, silo injections, missile firing ballistics, etc. In earlier works, projectile was assumed in a steady flow field when the computations start and the blast wave maintains a constant strength. However, in real situations, the projectile produces transient effects in the flow field which have a deterministic effect on the overtaking process. In the present work, the overtaking problem encountered in the near-field of muzzle guns is investigated for several projectile Mach numbers. Computations have been carried out using a chimera mesh scheme. The results show that, the unsteady wave structures are completely different from that of the steady flow field where the blast wave maintains a constant strength, and the supersonic and subsonic overtaking conditions cannot be distinguished by identifying the projectile bow shock wave only.

  • Rice blast, caused by Pyricularia oryzae (P. oryzae), is generally considered to be the most serious fungal disease of rice by its widespread distribution and destructiveness (Manandhar et al., 1998). The pathogenic fungus directly penetrates into the rice plant from a cellular structure called an appressorium that is formed at the tip of the germ tube. And the fungus can attack any aerial part of the rice plant, including seeds, in which the fungus may overwinter for several years. (omitted)

  • This study evaluated the mechanical and electrical properties of low-cement mortar using a large amount of industrial by-products to reduce carbon emissions from the cement industry. As types of industrial by-products, blast furnace slag and fly ash, which are representative materials, were used, and ultra-high fly ash was mixed and evaluated to solve the problem of initial strength loss. In addition, in order to evaluate the electrical properties, 1% of MWCNT was incorporated relative to the powder mass. As experimental items, the compressive strength was measured on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 28th days of age, and the rate of change in electrical resistance was measured on the 28th day of age. As a result of the experiment, the initial strength of the test specimen mixed with blast furnace slag and fly ash was significantly lower than that of 100% cement, and the specimen mixed with blast furnace slag showed strength equal to that of cement at 28 days of age. As an electrical characteristic, the electrical resistance was reduced when the load was loaded, and this reason is judged to be the effect of improving the conductivity as the connection between CNTs is narrowed by the compressive load.

  • Already, the air deck blasting method has been used to take many advantages of blasting. In the existing air deck blasting method, air deck is made usually on column charge. But in the case study, we analyzed about the effect of self supporting air tube which made air deck in column charge. As results of this case study, it was shown that blasting vibration was decreased about $20{\sim}26%$ and quantity of explosive was decreased about $10{\sim}20%$. Also, fragmentation was shown to be smaller than it of common blasting method.
