The blade failures are identified as the leading cause of unplanned outages for steam turbine. Most investigations of the failures are limited to material tests, chemical analysis of deposits, and possibly examination of material specimens. But to correct a blading problem requires more than positive identification of the mechanisms involved. An analytic procedure capable of predicting stress and dynamic characteristics of turbine blades is presented to increase steam turbine availability by decreasing blade failures. Finite element method is used to model and predict natural frequencies, steady and dynamic stresses of turbine blades. The procedure is illustrated by the case study. This procedure is used to guide, and support the plant manager's decision to avoid a costly, unplanned outage
Advancements in materialistic life styles and increasing awareness about adverse climatic changes and its negative effects on human life have been the driving force of finding new and clean sources of energy. Wind power has become technologically mature and commercially acceptable on global scale. However, fossil fuels have been the major sources of energy in most countries, renewable energy (particularly wind) is now booming worldwide. To cope with this wind energy technology, various related aspects have to be understood by the scientific, engineering, utility, and contracting communities. This study is an effort towards the understanding of the (i) wind turbine blade and tower structural stability issues, (ii) turbine blade and tower failures and remedial measures, (iii) weather and seismic effects on turbine blade and tower failures, (iv) gear box failures, and (v) turbine blade and tower failure analysis tools.
This paper describes an experimental analysis for improving the stability of blade failure due to the vibration resonance, which happens in the low-pressure steam turbine. Some cracks due to high cycle fatigue were found in the blades of a low-pressure turbine after long time operation. Impact test showed that such failure was mainly caused by the resonance. In other words, since one of the natural frequencies of the grouped blade is very close to the excitation frequency of the nozzle, the resonant vibration leads to a large amplitude of displacement and results in a large amount of stress that may cause fatigue failures in the blades. It is interesting that the blade failures occur only at blades neighboring with the nodal points of the natural vibration mode whose natural frequency is close to the nozzle passing frequency. The effective methods for increasing the reliability against the blade vibration are a heightening the fatigue limit of the blade using an advanced material and a removing the resonance away from the operating speed. It is well known that the removal of theresonance could be obtained by the installation of different types of shrouds, wires, and links between the blades as well as by the chance of the number of nozzles. In the present work, two kinds of modification for avoiding the resonance haute been considered; 1) slot-type finger, 2) long span cover. Full-scale mockup tests have been performed in order to confirm the verification for modification in the shop. Test results show that the use of long span cover is very useful to change the natural frequencies of the grouped blade and to avoid the resonance effectively.

The Nuclear and Fossil Steam Turbines record a considerable number of failures annually. Some of these failures reported are as result of blade failure. The failure of the L-0 blade in a Steam Turbine is one of the most reported blade failure in Nuclear and Fossil steam turbines. This paper seeks to identify the best Non Destructive Evaluation (NDE) method or methods to be used in the steam turbine L-0 blades inspection process. The development of systems engineering processes presents an opportunity to apply NDE inspection to the L-0 blades. This process apply computer modelling of the L-0 using ANSYS and by simulating the stresses experienced by the L-0 blade during operation it is possible to identify the most susceptible areas for crack formation and growth. The results from these models compared to industry data for validation. The analysis of these results used to predict the most probable failure location and failure modes. Therefore NDE inspection can be applied to these areas with greater degree of accuracy. This would be beneficial in the increasing the accuracy in the detection of cracks and hence save inspection time and the overall inspection cost. Furthermore, not only the location for crack formation and NDE inspection determined but also best the NDE inspection technique/techniques to be applied appropriately on the L-0 blade are prescribed.

Currently in Japan, the use of the small wind turbine is an upward trend. There are already many well established small wind turbine generators in use and their various failures have been reported. The most commonly sighted failure is blade damage. Thus the research purpose was set to develop a simple failure diagnostic system, where an Acoustic Emission (AE) signal was produced from the failure part of a blade which was measured by AE sensor. The failure diagnostic technique was thoroughly examined. Concurrently, the damage part of the blade was imitated, the AE signal was measured, and a FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) analysis was carried out, and was compared with the output characteristic. When one sheet of a blade was damaged 40mm or more, the level was computed at which failure could be diagnosed.
This paper describes the experience gained from the treatments for prevention of blade failure occurred in the low-pressure turbine. Some cracks due to high cycle fatigue were found at the blades in low-pressure turbines after long time operation. Such failure was mainly caused by the resonance of the blade with the vane passing frequency excitation. If a natural frequency of the blade exists near the excitation frequency, a resonant vibration can occur and leads to a large amount of stress which may cause fatigue failures in turbine blades. To avoid the resonance of the blade, some modifications have been performed and full-scaled mockup testing has been done to confirm the verification for modification. Test result shows that enlarging the span cover is very useful to change the natural frequency of the grouped blades effectively.
This study proposes a parallel operation strategy for small wind turbine systems. A small wind turbine system consists of blade, permanent magnet synchronous generator, three-phase diode rectifier, DC/DC buck converter, and the battery load. This configuration has reliability, simple control algorithm, high efficiency, and low cost. In spite of these advantages, the system stops when unexpected failures occur. Possible failures can be divided into mechanical and electrical parts. The proposed strategy focuses on the failure of electrical parts, which is verified by numerical analysis through equivalent circuit and acquired general formula of small wind power generation systems. Simulation and experimental results prove its efficiency and usefulness.
This paper focuses on the formulation and validation of an automatic strategy for the selection of the locations and directions of strain gauges to capture at best the modal response of a blade in a series of modes. These locations and directions are selected to render the strain measurements as robust as possible with respect to random mispositioning of the gauges and gauge failures. (omitted)
Because of the energy resources shortage and global pollution, the wind power systems have been developed consistently. Among the components of the wind power system, the rotor blades are the most important component. Generally it is made of GFRP material. Recently, GFRP material has been replaced by CFRP composite material in the blade which has an aerodynamic profile and twisted tip. However the failures has occurred in the trailing edge of the blade by the severe wind loading. Thus, tougher material than CFRP material is needed as like the aramid fiber. In this study, we investigated the mechanical behaviors of the blade using aramid fiber composites about wind speed variation. One-way FSI (fluid-structure interaction)analysis for the wind rotor blade was conducted. The structural analyses using the surface pressure loading resulted from wind flow field analysis were carried out. The results and analysis procedure in this paper can be utilized for the best strength design of the blade with aramid fiber composites.
In the recently released accident-investigation report on blade failure, almost 70% of blade failures was found at low pressure turbine blades, and it is well known that main cause is due to the vibration modes. This paper describes the systematic approach on the root cause of the blade failure at L 0 stage, 30MW single flow industrial steam turbine which had tripped by high vibration after ten-month commercial operation. A fracture was found at the only one damping wire hole of 59 blades, and crack was detected at three damping wire holes by NDT. According to the analysis result for the crack fracture surface and the chain of the sequential operational events, we come to the conclusion that a typical high cycle fatigue is the most dominant factor caused to the blade failure, the resonance frequency margin was narrowed by the cut damping wire and the high cycle vibration was amplified, and then the blade was broken at once by the centrifugal force when the crack reached the critical size.
