  • This study investigated the perceived usability of the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) amongst students at Umm Al-Qura University. A quantitative approach was employed to explore the potential relationship between Blackboard usability and social media platform usage. Additionally, the study aimed to identify other factors influencing perceived usability. Data were collected through a three-section questionnaire distributed electronically to a sample of students (n=544). The findings, based on System Usability Scale (SUS) scores, revealed that the overall perceived usability of Blackboard resided near the midpoint of the scale, indicating an "acceptable" level. A potential negative correlation emerged between social media usage time and perceived Blackboard usability. Students who reported lower social media usage exhibited higher SUS scores. Training on Blackboard usage demonstrably exerted a positive influence on perceived usability. Gender was not identified as a statistically significant factor. An analysis of student support methods revealed that seeking help from a friend was the most prevalent approach, followed by search engines, university technical support, and social media platforms. The findings suggest that implementing strategies to improve Blackboard usability at Umm Al-Qura University could be achieved through readily accessible training materials and the exploration of alternative support channels.

  • Contemporary University students are considered the Z generation who were born after 1995. They are more tech savvy than millennials. To target the generation, traditional class management platforms have evolved to smart LMS that is more customized and accessible for smart devices. Global level information search and collaboration can also be implemented using such smart LMS. However, switching from one LMS to another LMS requires great effort from teachers and support from staffs. This study measured the learners' perception of the system when they were exposed to a new smart-LMS. Blackboard Learn Ultra was used for 15 weeks and at the end of the semester, a questionnaire was administered to the students of these classes. Results indicated that experience with previous LMS discouraged students from adopting Blackboard Learn. Result of TAM modeling indicated that perceived usefulness, compared to perceived ease of use and attitude, was an effective aspect to bring positive acceptance of the system. A qualitative approach and network analysis were also conducted based on students' responses. Both positive and negative responses were detected. Inconvenience due to mechanical aspects was mentioned. Dissatisfaction compared to previous local LMS use was also mentioned. Mobile application and communication effectiveness were positive aspects. Revised course development and promoting how useful the system may help enhance the acceptance of the new system.

  • This is an extended paper explaining the role of E-learning and quality development in the current situation. Amid Covid:19, E-Learning has achieved a new miles stone in imparting education and all levels of institutions have transformed their learning platform from face to face to virtual learning. In this scenario E-Learning is facing two major challenges, first to ensure the ability of computer systems or software to exchange and make use of information on virtual platform (interoperability) and secondly, developing quality learning through e-Learning. To impart learning and teaching (L&T) through E-learning, Middle East University (MEU) has adopted Learning Management Services (LMS) through Blackboard. The university has three types of L&T methods; full online, Blended and Supportive. This research studies the concept, scope and dimensions of interoperability (InT) of E-Learning in MEU then the connection and interdependence between with quality development. In this paper we have described the support and the importance of finest standards and specifications for the objectives of InT of E-Learning and quality development in MEU. The research is based principally on secondary data observed from MEU E-Learning deanship. Also sample of 20 E-Learning experts at MEU were given closed ended as well as semi closed questionnaires for evaluating the assurance of InT of E-Learning and quality development. These experts are mainly certified online facilitators and admin staff. Results provide the verification of application and presence of InT of E-Learning and assured the quality development process in MEU.

  • Due to COVID19 pandemic, most of educational institutions and schools changed the traditional way of teaching to online teaching and learning using well-known Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Canvas, Blackboard, etc. Accordingly, LMS started to generate a large data related to students' characteristics and achievements and other course-related information. This makes it difficult to teachers to monitor students' behaviour and performance. Therefore, a need to support teachers with a tool alerting student who might be in risk based on their recorded activities and achievements in adopted LMS in the school. This paper focuses on the benefits of using recorded data in LMS platforms, specifically Moodle, to predict students' performance by analysing their behavioural data and engagement activities using data mining techniques. As part of the overall process, this study encountered the task of extracting and selecting relevant data features for predicting performance, along with designing the framework and choosing appropriate machine learning techniques. The collected data underwent pre-processing operations to remove random partitions, empty values, duplicates, and code the data. Different machine learning techniques, including k-NN, TREE, Ensembled Tree, SVM, and MLPNNs were applied to the processed data. The results showed that the MLPNNs technique outperformed other classification techniques, achieving a classification accuracy of 93%, while SVM and k-NN achieved 90% and 87% respectively. This indicates the possibility for future research to investigate incorporating other neural network methods for categorizing students using data from LMS.
