  • The installation of light oil facilities or delayed cokers seems to be inevitable in the oil refinery industry due to the heavy crude oil reserves and the increased use of light fuels as petroleum products. Petroleum coke is a byproduct of oil refineries and it has higher fixed carbon content, higher calorific value, and lower ash content than coal. However, its sulfur content and heavy metal content are higher than coal. In spite of disadvantages, petroleum coke might be one of promising resources due to gasification processes. The gasification of petroleum coke can improve economic value of oil refinery industries by handling cheap, toxic wastes in an environment-friendly way. In this study, $CO_2$ gasification reaction kinetics of petroleum coke, various coals and mixing coal with petroleum coke have investigated and been compared by using TGA. The kinetics of $CO_2$ gasification has been performed with petroleum coke, 3 kinds of bituminous coal [BENGALLA, White Haven, TALDINSKY], and 3 kinds of sub-bituminous coal [KPU, LG, MSJ] at various temperature[$1100-1400^{\circ}C$].

  • The effects of air velocity and excess air on combustion characteristics were studied in a fluidized bed combustor. The domestic low-grade anthracite coal with heating value of 2010 kcal/kg and the imported bituminous coal from Australia with heating value of 6520 kcal/kg were used as coal samples. The combustion characteristics of mixed fuels in a fluidized bed combustor could be interpreted by pressure fluctuation properties, ash distribution and gas emission. The properties of the pressure fluctuations, such as the standard deviation, cross-correlation function, dominant frequency and the power spectral density function, were obtained from the statistical analysis. From this study, the combustion region increased with increasing air velocity but decreased with excess air due to combustion characteristics of anthracite and bituminous coal.

  • This paper describes the non-isothermal pyrolysis of cashew shell cake (CSC) - bituminous coal blends. The blends exhibit two distinct stages in the thermogravimetric curves, which the first stage stems from CSC and the second one from the superposition of CSC and coal pyrolysis. The pyrolysis behavior of the blend was linearly proportional to the blending ratios. The overall behavior of the blends was evaluated in terms of the maximum rate of weight loss, characteristic temperatures, char yields, and the calculated and experimental thermogravimetric curves. The activation energies ranged up to 49 kJ/mol for the blends were obtained and used to evaluate the interaction in the blends. The present thermogravimetric study shows that there is no significant interaction between CSC and coal in the blends, and it was supported by the characteristic values which are linearly proportional to the weight percentages of cashew cake-shell in the blends. The no-interaction might be due to the fact that the main reaction zones are distinctively different for two constituents, so the additive rule is acceptable for describing pyrolysis behavior of the present blends.

  • A cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace was used to investigate the effect of particle size on the pulverized coal combustion behavior. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Ignition characteristics of pulverized coal flame were determined through the amount of methane in the carrier gas for the self-sustaining flame. Easiest ignition occurred with the immediately-sized coal particles. Ignition of coal jet flame appeared to occur through a gas-phase homogeneous process for particles larger than 30 microns. Below this limiting size, heterogeneous process probably dominated ignition of coal flame. Oxygen concentration of combustion air was varied up to 50%, to determine the oxygen-enrichment effect on the coal ignition behavior. Oxygen enrichment of primary air assisted ignition behavior of pulverized coal flame. However, enrichment of secondary air didn't produce any effect on the ignition behavior.

  • The particle size effect on the combustion characteristics of pulverized coal was investigated in the cylindrical-shape, horizontal furnace, fired in the range of 8.8∼10.6 kw. Three differently-sized fractions (5, 30, and 44 microns in average diameter) of high-volatile bituminous coal, were burned in the test furnace. Burnout behavior of pulverized coal flame were determined through the measurement of stable species concentrations (CO$_2$and H$_2$O). Concentrations of CO$_2$were compared with the theoretical values and the result showed good agreement. Thermal behavior of pulverized coal flame were determined as maximum flame temperatures occurred at fuel-rich conditions in every case. Flame lengths were also determined by decreasing with the particle size decrease. The flame length of the fine sized coal sample was comparable to that produced by distillate oil. The color of the coal flames ranged from orange to yellow, with the flame of the fine size fraction being brighter and yellower than the others.

  • This paper describes the non-isothermal pyrolysis of wood pellet and saw dust, and their blends with bituminous coal. The blends showed the distinct, two peaks in thermogravimetric curves, and the first peak came from the biomass pyrolysis and the second one came from the coal pyrolysis. The interaction in the blend was evaluated in terms of the maximum rate of weight loss, characteristic temperatures, char yields, and the calculated and experimental thermogravimetric curves. The activation energies and frequency factors for the blends were obtained with the multi-stage, Coats and Redfern method. The respective activation energies of 73 and 67 kJ/mol and the frequency factors of 725,100 and $65,262min^{-1}$ were obtained for the present wood pellet and saw dust samples. The thermogravimetric study shows that there is no significant interaction between the present biomass and coal in the blends, and the pyrolysis behavior can be described with the additive rule.

  • Up to now, only superficial studies on the combustion velocity of smokeless fuels have been reported, while it should be a basical factor on the utilization of low quality coals and some other smokeless solid fuels. It was, therefore, difficult to choose raw material coals in manufacturing gaseous fuels. With the intent to solve above problem, we have determined combustion velocity of domestic anthracites, graphites, coalites of lignite and cokes from Japanese bituminous coal. The results show that the cokes from Japanese bituminous coal which has been used as raw material in the manufacturing gaseous fuels such as water gas, or producer gas in Korea can be replaced by some sources of domestic anthracite or coalite of lignite.

  • A study on the synthesis of zeolite from bituminous coal ESP fly ash as a raw material, which was emitted from the power plant, was carried out to reduce environmental problems and reuse of the industrial wastes. Bituminous coal fly ash was used as the source of silica and alumina. Zeolite was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction in aqueous NaOH solution with sodium aluminate as additive. The objective of this study is to elucidate the effect of several experimental variables on the synthesis of zeolite. The effects of preroasting temperature, mixing speed, leaching alkalinity, and molar ratio of Na$_{2}$O/SiO$_{2}$ and SiO$_{2}$/Al$_{2}$O of the products were investigated. The synthesized zeolite was proved to be NaA, which is known as 4A type, by comparing with SEM images, and X-ray diffraction analysis. And also we know that the transformation of zeolite A take places into other types of zeolites, i.e. Hydroxysodalite, zeolite P, with the variation of leaching alkalinity.

  • This paper introduces the automatic fine Bituminous Coal injection lance position control method using flame image process. The fine Coal injection lance is used to supply additional heat into the furnace in Mill plant. It injects fine coal into high pressured air flow and produces very heated and high pressured flame. For the such high temperature and pressure, the fine coal injection lance effects not only efficiency of burner but also furnace abrasion. To keep efficient combustion status and to avoid the abrasion, in this paper, the flame is monitored by computer image process. This paper proposes the flame image process method and lance position control according to calculated result for flame image process.

  • This study was performed to find the ability of bituminous coal fly ash to remove fluoride from water and wastewater at different fluoride concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time and pH. The removal of fluoride is favorable at low concentration, high temperature and acidic pH. With the increase in the initial fluoride concentration, the amount adsorbed increased. Adsorption process was exothermic at pH 2.0. Physisorption process was predominant over pH 2.3, while Chemisorption was under pH 2.3. Fluoride uptake by fly ash was conducted the adherence of fluoride on the active surface sites of adsorbent and its intraparticle diffusion within adsorbent. The values of rate constants of adsorption were 3.028X 10$^{-3}$, 4.715X 10$^{-3}$, 2.88X 10$^{-3}$ (min) and intraparticle diffusion were 1.434X10$^{-3}$, 3.012X10$^{-3}$, 5.635X10$^{-3}$ at each temperatures.
