  • A multi-section DFB-LD shows optical bistability subject to externally injected light signal, then it has potential applications such as wavelength conversion and optical logic gates. In this paper, we have studied the optical bistability in multi-section DFB-LD using split-step time-domain model. It is confirmed that the multi-section DFB-LD, which is excited inhomogeneously, shows bistability. The optical bistable characteristics are investigated when input light is injected into a absorptive region. Simulation results show that multi-section DFB-LD works as a flip-flop depending on the set-reset optical pulse which has a few ns in switching time and a few pj in switching energy, so that it can act as a optical logic device. Besides, if we change the carrier lifetime and the differential gain coefficient, it is expected that the response time of optical output signal can be reduced.

  • We fabricated the asymmetric Fabry-Perot etalon which contains amorphous $As_2S_3$ as a spacer layer by using the method of optical multilayer coating and observed the optical bistability with the polarization. Optical thickness of the spacer layer is 2$\lambda$ at $Ar^+$ ($\lambda $=514.5 nm) laser wavelength. Optical bistability was observed at the intensities between 80~100 mW and the experiment shows us that the trends of bistable loop of the reflected and the transmitted lights are quite different depending on the state of polarization. This phenomena can be explained as the phase differences of each polarizations are different in the nonlinear Fabry-Perot etalon.

  • In this work, the electrical bistability of an organic CT complex is demonstrated and the possible switching mechanism is proposed. 2,9-Dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) are used as an organic donor and acceptor, respectively, and poly-methamethylacrylate (PMMA) is used as a polymeric matrix for spin-coating. A device with the Al/($Al_2O_3$)/PMMA:BCP:TCNQ[1:1:0.5 wt%]/Al configuration demonstrated bistable and switching characteristics similar to Ovshinsky switching with a low threshold voltage and a high ON/OFF ratio. An analysis of the current-voltage curves of the device suggested that electrical switching took place due to the charge transfer mechanism.

  • In this work, we studied the effect of chirped grating on optical bistability in λ/4-shifted semiconductor distributed-feedback(DFB) devices, such as an etalon with nonlinear mirrors, a λ/4-shifted DFB waveguide and aλ/4-shifted DFB laser amplifier. We found that chirped DFB devices exhibit bistable switching at a lower input power.OCIS code : 050.2770, 190.1450, 190.5970, 230.0230.

  • TO study the polarization optical bistability (POB), we constructed the hybrid opto-electronic interferometer which has orthogonal polarized lights and one of the optical phases is modulated by a feedback signal. And we developed the theoretical POB equation for this system and observed the POB by varying input intensity of the light and initial phase experimentally.

  • In this paper, we propose the bistability the bistability in a chiral-splay nematic liquid crystal cell, which is obtained by adding a chiral additive to a splay cell and introduce a novel switching method for the bistable chiral-splay nematic cell in order to transit the LC director between the non-twisted state with splay and the 180$^{\circ}$ twist state.
