  • In order to investigate the conformational preferences to elicit the tastes, conformational free energy calculations using the empirical potential ECEPP/3 and the hydration shell model were carried out on the L-aspartyl dipeptide methyl esters, L-$\^$+/HAsp$\^$-/-D-Xaa-OMe, in the unhydrated state, where Xaa includes sweet (Ala, Abu, Ser, Thr, Val, and lle), bitter (Phe, Trp, and Leu), and tasteless (Tyr and Met) residues. • A working molecular model of the angiotensin II type 1 receptor is built based on the seven transmembrane helix structure of the recently refined bacteriorhodopsin atomic coordinates. A multiple copy simultaneous search (MCSS) method is used to search the pharmacophore of angiotensin on the surface of the receptor. Multiple copies of amino acid fragments and organic functional groups are scattered around the possible binding site and the time dependent. (omitted)

  • The gating kinetics of an inward-rectifier K$\^$+/ channel, ROMK2 (Kir1.lb), were described by a model having one open state and two closed states. The long closed state was abolished by EDTA, suggesting that it was due to block by divalent cations. These closures exhibit a biphasic voltage-dependence, implying that the divalent blockers can permeate the channel.(omitted)

  • The subfornical organ (SFO) represents neuroglial circumventricular organ structures bordering the anterior third cerebral ventricle. Owing to the absence of the blood-brain barrier, the cellular elements of subfornical organ can be reached by circulating messenger molecules transferring afferent information and provide a good coding model of chemical information processing in the body.(omitted)

  • Bacterial chemotaxis receptors are some of the simplest and most studied transmembrane receptors. Their simple signaling pathway has elements relevant for understanding the mechanisms for signal recognition, transduction through the membrane, relays among the molecules in the pathway, and adaptation to a persistent signal.(omitted)

  • Single chain-monellin (SCM) was recently constructed by fusing the two chains of monellin. From the view of protein folding, SCM serves as an ideal model system especially in tackling ${\alpha}$-helix-${\beta}$-sheet interactions due to the following reasons: First, it consists of simple distinct structural elements (${\alpha}$-helix and ${\beta}$-sheet) which are assembled in a perpendicular manner.(omitted)

  • Pores can form and grow in biomembranes because of factors such as thermal fluctuation, transmembrane electrical potential, and cellular environment. We propose a new statistical physics model of the pore growth treated as a non-Markovian stochastic process, with a free energy barrier and memory friction from the membrane matrix treated as a quasi-two-dimensional viscoelastic and dielectric fluid continuum.(omitted)

  • Traditional Internet pricing schemes are coming under continual pressure to adapt to, and encourage, a changing mix of Internet applications and consumer usage patterns. Much research effort over the last decade has been focused on developing more efficient and attractive charging schemes. However, none of the proposed models has been widely deployed. This raises questions regarding the inhibiting factors and missing pieces that make pricing the Internet such a challenge. In this paper, we discuss the problems with current Internet pricing schemes, review the history of Internet pricing research over the last ten years, and summarize the key features and motivations of the most significant models. We develop a novel visual approach to comparing and evaluating such schemes using a three-dimensional (3D) metric encompassing technical efficiency, economic efficiency, and social impact. We address and discuss the important factors that have inhibited the deployment of the reviewed models and suggest productive areas of focus for future Internet pricing research.
