  • The physical properties and drug release behaviours of polyethylene glycol grafted poly ${\gamma}$- benzyl L-glutamate (PEG- g- PBLG), polyethylene glycol crosslinked poly ${\gamma}$-benzyl L- glutamate(PEG-c-PBLG), and PBLG homopolymer are compared. PBLG containing PEG segements showed higher wettability and larger enlongation than PBLG homoplymer, but lower elastic modulus. The release rate of rhodamine is strongly influenced by the wettability of the polymer. Rhodamine is more rapidly released from PEG-c-PBLG membrane having a larger water contact angle than from other polymer having a lower water contact angle. The surfaces of PBLG derivative membranes are modified by substitution reaction using hydroxyalkylamine. The resulting polymer membranes showed hider wettability and swelling ratio than virgin membranes.

  • The 15 month pilot study was performed to investigate the effect of pretreatment by monochloramine ($NH_2Cl$) on the performance of RO membranes made of cellulose acetate (CA) and polyamide (PA). Both RO membranes experienced severe biological fouling without any pretreatment during the treatment of highly organic surface water in Florida, USA. Feed monochloramination at 5 mg/L significantly minimized productivity loss by effective control of biofouling. The CA membrane did not show any structural damages by monochloramine, while the PA membrane suffered from a gradual loss of membrane integrity by chlorine oxidation, which was characterized as an increase in productivity and a decrease in selectivity. The degradation of PA membrane increased with increasing monochloramine dose.

  • .The healing of a bone defect is complex, and involves a wide range of cellular, molecular, physiological, and biological processes. The main effect of bone substitute is to promote wound healing by induce cell proliferation. Bone defect sites usually are localized below the original bone surface; therefore, space production and maintenance between the membrane and the original bone surface is essential. As a result, membranes must have proper mechanical strength to prevent the collapse of the soft tissue and maintain wound space that permits membranes of poly (L-lactide) (PLLA) were fabricated to provide and maintain sufficient space for bone growth. • Polyurethane diagnostic membranes were prepared to measure blood glucose level of diagnostics. Final absorbances at 680 nm through activated polyurethane membranes were measured at various concentration of glucose in blood. The end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S) was found to have a linear relationship toward the blood glucose concentration. The effects of hematocrit on the glucose concentration measurements were examined. In low hematocrit, dose-response slope (DRS) values between gluose concentration and K/S values did not show the big differences compared to those in plasma. However, in high hematocrit (more than 40%) DRS values were considerably decreased.

  • A new type of diagnostic membranes based on methoxyethoxy and trifluoroethoxy co-substituted polyphosphazene has been prepared to measure blood glucose level of diabetics. Final absorbances at 680 nm through activated polyphosphazene membranes were measured at various concentration of glucose in plasma or blood. The end-point results of varing absorbance values as time (K/S) was found to have a linear relationship toward the blood glucose concentration. The effects of substitution rates with hydrophilic groups and hydrophobic groups on the measurements of glucose concentration were studied. Dose-response slope (DRS) values between glucose concentration and K/S values increased as the hydrophilic substitution rates increased. However, in more than 30% of the substitution rates, it was difficult to measure exact concentration level of glucose because DRS increased rapidly.

  • 1. Introduction : Research progresses in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering have been made during the last decades with important contributions to the industrial development and to the quality of our life. An interesting case is related to the membrane science and technology continuous impact to innovative processes and products, particularly appropriate for a sustainable industrial growth. Membrane operations have been familiar for many years to biologists and chemists working in their laboratorier or studying biological phenomena. Only recently engineers started to operate in' this area. The preparation of asymmetric CA membranes at University of California, Los Angeles in the early 60s is generally recognized as a crucial moment for membranology (1). Loeb and Sourirajan with their discovery of how to increase significantly the permeability of polymeric membranes without significant changes in their selectivity, made realistic the possibility of their use in large scale operations for desalting brackish and sea water by reverse osmosis and for various other molecular separations in different industrial areas. Reverse osmosis is today a well recognized basic unit operations, togheter with ultrafiltration, crossflow microfiltration,. nanofiltration, all pressure driven membrane processes. Already in 1992 more than 4 milIions m$^3$/day were the total capacity of RO desalination plants and in 1995 more than 180.000 m$^2$ of ultrafiltration membranes were installed for the treatment of wheys and milk (2) (3).

  • Inspired by the specific amino acid sequence Asn-Pro-Ala (NPA) of water channel aquaporins (AQPs), we fabricated polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes by introducing reduced glutathione (GSH) in interfacial polymerization (IP) method. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), zeta potential and static water contact angle measurement were employed to characterize the chemical composition, morphology, electronegativity and hydrophilicity of the NF membranes. The water flux of GSH/PIP-TMC NF membrane reached $32.00L\;m^{-2}h^{-1}$ at 0.2 MPa, which was approximately twice than that of pristine PIP-TMC NF membrane when the ratio of GHS to piperazidine (PIP) was 40% during IP process. More water channels were built as GSH was embedded into PA layer. The fabricated NF membranes also took on potent rejection for dyes and $Na_2SO_4$. This study presents a simple and facile method to simulate water channels-based biological materials which may find potential application in water treatment.

  • Heterogeneous membranes were prepared by compression molding for the recovery of ammonium ion from waste water. Degree of sulfonation for sulfonated ion exchange resin increased with increasing amount of chlorosulfonic acid. It was 3.32 meq/g at 10 vol%. The tensile strength and elongation of the heterogeneous membrane was decreased with increasing contents of ion exchange resin. The tensile strength for LLDPE matrix membrane was the highest and also the elongation for EVA matrix membranes were the highest. The water content of heterogeneous membrane was increased with increasing contents of ion exchange resin. The maximum value of transport number for PE matrix membrane was 0.973. The electrical resistance of LLDPE matrix membrane was the lowest. It was value of $10.36{\Omega}/cm^2$ at 70 wt% resins.

  • Phospholipids function as major components of biological membranes as well as precursors of biologically active lipid messengers. It is well known that arachidonic acid attached at the sn-2 position of phosphoglycerides serves as a precursor of prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Recently, it has been recognized that lysophospholipids such as lysophosphatidic acid, sphingosine 1-phosphate, lysophosphatidylserine and monoglyceride also function as lipid messengers with a variety of biological activities. • The effect of nonlamellar-prone lipids, diacylglycerol (DG) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), on the ATPase activity of SecA was examined. When Escherichia coli (E. coli) PE of the standard vesicles composed of 60 mol% of this lipid and 40 mol% of dioleoylphosphatidylglycerol (DOPG) is gradually replaced with either dioleoylgylcerol (DOG) or dioeloyl PE(DOPE), the ATPase activity of SecA present together increased appreciably.(omitted)
