  • For two decades and more, a lot of research work on the biological effects of EMF (Electromagnetic Field) on human health have been reported. Electric facilities in a typical substation are the main source of magnetic field. This paper presents the measurement and analysis of magnetic field in 345/154KV outdoor substation. The magnetic field depends on the currents which distributed by electric facilities. The result of this paper will be able to be used as basic informations to reduce the level of EMF from the electric utility facilities.

  • Nanotechnology arises from the exploitation of physical, chemical,and biological properties of systems that are intermediate in size between isolated atoms/molecules and bulk materials, where phenomena length scales become comparable to the size of the structure. In addition nanotechnology implies direct control of materials and devices on molecular and atomic scale, including fabrication of functional nanostructures with desired properties, synthesis and processing of nanoparticles, self-assembly, use of quantum effects, etc. This article is a collection of Informations of trend of research and development in the field of nanotechnology in U.S., EU, Japan and Korea. And we would like to include some idea to decide the direction and the strategy for the investment for nanotechnology.

Wavelet-Based Fuzzy Modeling Using a DNA Coding Method

  • In this paper, we propose a new wavelet-based fuzzy modeling using a DNA coding method. Generally, it is well known that the DNA coding method is more diverse in the knowledge expression and better in the optimization performance than the genetic algorithm (GA) because it can encode more plentiful genetic informations based on the biological DNA. The proposed method can construct a fuzzy model using the wavelet transform, in which the coefficients are identified by the DNA coding method. Thus, we can effectively get the fuzzy model of the nonlinear system by using the advantages of both wavelet transform and DNA coding method. In order to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method, it is compared with modeling method using the conventional GA.

GC-MS Analysis of Diterpene Quinone Constituents of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix and Biological Activity

  • The ether extract of Salviae miltiorrhizae Radix(SMR) was fractioned to give five subfractions, so that two subfractions of them were recrystallized to yield each pure diterpene quinone pigment. On the basis of spectral evidence, these two compounds were identified as tanshinone II and crytotanshinone. Cryptotanshinone exhibited both of a potent platelet anti-aggregating activity in vitro and a potent antimicrobial activity. GC-MS analysis of the other extract showed that tanshinone II was contained in the largest proportion of all the diterpene quinones. In addition, GC-MS analysis gave other valuable analytical informations.

  • The Outflow facility of eye ball provides crucial informations in the diagnose of ophthalmological glaucoma. Tn this study an ophthalmic outflow facility measuring device is developed and experimentally tested. This system employs pressure sensors and linear positioning device to regulate solution reservoir height, the pressure of eye ball. The experimental result show that the system works well even in harsh environment so that it can be implemented in ophthalmic practice as well as in biomedical research.

  • Nondestructive methods such as ultrasonic and magnetic resonance imaging systems have many advantages but still much expensive. And they do not give exact color information and may miss some details. If it is allowed to destruct a biological object to obtain interior and exterior informations, 3D image visualization model from a series of sliced sectional images gives more useful information with relatively low cost. In this paper, a PC based automatic 3D visualization system is presented. The system is composed of three modules. The first module is the handling and image acquisition module. The handling module feeds and slices a cylindrical shape paraffin, which holds a biological object inside the paraffin. And the paraffin is kept being solid by cooling while being handled. The image acquisition modulo captures the sectional image of the object merged into the paraffin consecutively. The second one is the system control and interface module, which controls actuators for feeding, slicing, and image capturing. And the last one is the image processing and visualization module, which processes a series of acquired sectional images and generates a 3D volumetric model. To verify the condition for the uniform slicing, normal directional forces of the cutting edge according to the various cutting angles were measured using a strain gauge and the amount of the sliced chips were weighed and analyzed. Once the 3D model was constructed on the computer, user could manipulate it with various transformation methods such as translation, rotation, and scaling including arbitrary sectional view.

  • liposome에 결합되어 있는 ${\alpha}-Tocopherol$의 형광을 이용하여 liposome의 상전이온도를 측정할 수 있었다. 이는 ${\alpha}-Tocopherol$의 vitamin E로서의 중요성 이외에 형광성 프로브로서의 새로운 가치의 발견이다. 형광성 프로브로서 그 응용의 확대를 위한 필수적인 기초자료의 수집을 위해, 분자분광학적성질을 조사하였다. 용액중의 ${\alpha}-Tocopherol$은 monomer와 dimer의 두가지 형태로 존재하며, 단파장흡수대$(291{\sim}294nm)$의 monomer는 형광성인데 반하여 dimer는 298nm 부근을 흡수하는 비형광성이고 분자간수소결합에 의하여 형성되었음이 밝혀졌다. liposome에 결합된 ${\alpha}-Tocopherol$은 각종 유기용매 중에서의 ${\alpha}-Tocopherol$과는 판이한 형광성질을 갖고 있었고 chromanolate이온형태의 화학종으로부터 생긴 것으로 해석되었다.

If it is allowed to destruct some biological objects to get interior and exterior informations, constructing 3D image form a series of slices sectional images gives more useful information with relatively low cost. In this paper, a PC based automatic 3D model generator was developed. The system was composed of three modules. The first module was the object handling and image acquisition module, which fed and sliced the object sequentially and maintains the paraffine cool to be in solid state and captures the sectional image consecutively. The second one was the system control and interface module, which controls actuators for feeding, slicing, and image capturing. And the last was the image processing and visualization module, which processed a series of acquired sectional images and generated 3D volumetric model. Handling module was composed of the gripper, which grasped and fed the object and the cutting device, which cuts the object by moving cutting edge forward and backward. sliced sectional images were acquired and saved in a form of bitmap file. 2D sectional image files were segmented from the background paraffine and utilized to generate the 3D model. Once 3-D model was constructed on the computer, user could manipulated it with various transformation methods such as translation, rotation, scaling including arbitrary sectional view.

피클용 오이 (Cucumis sativus)에 함유된 Lipoxygenase 효소활성의 변화와 효소의 분포 특성 (Characteristics and Localization of Lipoxygenase Activity in Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) Fruit)

  • Lipoxygenase (LOX) 효소의 최적 활성 조건과 활성 억제등 LOX 활성 측정의 중요한 정보를 확립하기 위하여, 추출 Buffer의 영향, 기질, pH, 저장, 온도, NaCl, $CaCl_2$외 cations 및 antioxidants의 요소들이 LOX 활성에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 그리고 오이 tissue내의 LOX의 편재도 시험하였다. LOX에 대한 우수한 기질은 linolenic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid 순서였다. 오이 껍질이나, mesocarp tissue내에 존재하는 LOX의 활성은 pH 5.5가 최적 조건이었으며, 섭씨 $40^{\circ}C$$50^{\circ}C$에서는 비교적 안정성을 보였다. LOX의 활성은 pH 5.0와 0.2M NaCl 조건을 같이 주었을때 opitimum 안정성을 보였다. LOX 활성은 $Mn^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}$ 또는 $Al^{3+}$와 같은 양이온에 의해서는 감소되었지만, 오히려 $Ca^{2+}$은 효소의 활성을 자극시켰다. 한편 butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA)와 propyl gallate의 농도가 증가할수록 LOX 활성은 감소되었다. 오이 껍질에서의 LOX의 활성은 다른 tissue에, locule, mesocarp, 비해 최고치를 보였다.

  • In this paper, a new method for lung area segmentation in chest radiographs has been presented. The movivation of this study is to include fuzzy informations about the relation between the image date structure and the area to be segmented in the segmentation process efficiently. The proposed method approached the segmentation problem in the perspective of pattern classification, using trainable pattern classifier, multi-layer perceptron. Having been trained with 10 samples, this method gives acceptable segmentation results, and also demonstrated the desirable property of giving better results as the training continues with more training samples.
