  • Several strains capable of degrading PEGs(Polyethylene Glycols) were isolated and investigated for their biodegradation ability of PEGs. Microorganisms screened for the biodegrada- tion studies were those grown on the PEG used as a sole carbon and energy source. It was known that the number of microorganisms decreased when grown on the high molecular weight of PEG. A biodegradation of PEG was investigated with such microorganisms in the reactor and resulted in the decrease in PEG concentration meaning that PEG was degraded in the reactor. This microorganism was identified as Flavobacterium sp. The biodegradability was found to be about 18.8% for PEG-8000 and 25.4% for PEG-10,000, respectively. For the manufacture of biodeg- radable PEG film, EMAA/PEG and EAA/PEG blending ability was investigated with IR spectrum and showed that it was possible to produce blending film.

  • Functional genomics aims at uncovering useful information carried on genome sequences and at using it to understand the mechanisms of biological function. Elucidating the unknown biological functions of new genes based upon the genomics rationales will greatly speed up the extensive understanding of biocatalysis and biodegradation in biological world including microorganisms. DNA microarrays generate a system for the simultaneous measurement of the expression level of thousands of genes in a single hybridization assay. Their data mining (transcriptome) strategy has two categories: differential gene expression and coordinated gene expression. Furthermore, measurement of proteins (proteome) generates information on how the transcribed sequences end up as functional characteristics within the cell, and quantitation of metabolites yields information on how the functional proteins act to produce energy and process substrates (metabolome). Various composite functional genomics databases containing genetic, enzymatic and metabolic information have been developed and will contribute to the understanding of the life blue print and the new discoveries and practices in biocatalysis and biodegradation that could enrich their industrial and environmental applications.

  • In recent years, there has been an intensive research on the application of degradative activities of fungi for treatment of various non-degradable materials such as petroleum hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, dyes and so on. Chief of all, the fungal treatment technology is received the spotlight as one of the most promising alternatives to replace present methods for the treatment of dye wastewater. The present paper reviews the recent trend in research on the decolorization and biodegradation of dyes by various fungi, and improvements in bioreactors and bioprocesses involved the fungal treatment of dye wastewater. It also discusses alternatives and perspectives for the innovation of mycoremediation to treat dye wastewaters.

  • The effect of $^{60}Co$ are discussed with regard to radiochemical destruction detergent. The study deals specifically with the effect gamma radiation from $^{60}Co$ source upon aquous solution of detergent. Test on biodegradation of A B S (solium alkyl benzene sulfonate) under the waste-water prior to the detergent conversion to biodegradable surfactants. The reason for removal of A B S was their extreme environmental stability and the associateo appearance of foam in waste water treatment plants. Although the A B S are considered biodegradable the time required for biodegradation in practical with the present environmental guidelines.

  • Bench-scale experiments conducted to evaluation of the biostimulation and bioaugmentation techniques in treatment of petroleum contaminated soil. The soil bioreactors were operated for a 52 day-period. PDB population in the stimulated treatments increased from $7{\times}10^4MPN/g$ soil in zero day to $7{\times}10^7MPN/g$ soil after 23 days. However, despite the initially higher PDB population in the augmented treatments, it was decreased PDB population with respect to time. The average biodegradation rate in the augmented treatments were greater than of the stimulated treatment in the early stage, but the average biodegradation rate in the latter stage were calculated $3{\sim}5mg/kg-day$ in the augmented treatments and 10.38mg/kg-day in the stimulated treatments. The TPH removal rate was calculated $20{\sim}30%$ in the augmented treatments and 53% in the stimulated treatments.

  • To investigate the biodegrading capability of several white-rot fungi isolated in Korea, biodegradation of BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene), phenanthrene and pyrene were tested in fungal cultures. Phanerochaete chrysosporium removed 20-30% of BTX mixture during 21 days of incubation in serum bottle. Coriolus versicolor KR-11W and Irpex lacteus mineralized 10.02 and 8.26% of totla phenanthrene, respectively, which were higher than in other studies with P. chrysosporium. These two strains also showed high mineralization rates (9.2-10.1%) for 4-ring pyrene. I. lacteus metabolized most of the added pyrene and 23.29% was incorporate dinto fungal biomass. Almost 50/5 of the pyrene was converted to polar metabolites and recovered from aqueous phase of culture. These results indicated that some white- rot fungi have higher biodegradability than P. chrysosporium and could be used in bioremediation of aromatic hydrocarbon contaminants in soil.

  • This study examined the capacity of immobilized bacteria to degrade petroleum hydrocarbons. A mixture of hydrocarbon-degrading bacterial strains was immobilized in alginate and incubated in crude oil-contaminated artificial seawater (ASW). Analysis of hydrocarbon residues following a 30-day incubation period demonstrated that the biodegradation capacity of the microorganisms was not compromised by the immobilization. Removal of n-alkanes was similar in immobilized cells and control cells. To test reusability, the immobilized bacteria were incubated for sequential increments of 30 days. No decline in biodegradation capacity of the immobilized consortium of bacterial cells was noted over its repeated use. We conclude that immobilized hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria represent a promising application in the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated areas.

  • To examine whether the xylene component of BTX (benzene, toluene, xylene) mixture is cometabolized and residues are produced in soil, $\^$14/C-labeled-0-xylene was added to sandy loam in combination with unlabeled benzene and toluene. After 4 weeks of incubation in a sealed system connected to an oxygen reservoir, 55.1% of the radiocarbon was converted to $\^$14/CO$\sub$2/, 3.0% was to 95.8% radiocarbon recovery. Biomass incorporation of o-xylene radiocarbon which was detected by fumigation/extraction was usually low (5.6%), but 32.1% radiocarbon became associated with soil humus. Most of the numus-bound radiocarbon was found in humin fraction. In addition to o-xylene, p-xylene and toluene also showed similar results. The evidence shows that some of their reactive methylcatechol biodegradation intermediates attach to the humic metrix in soil in preference to mineralization and biomass incorporation.

  • The starch-filled waterborne acrylate (SWAC) films were prepared. The structures and properties of SWAC films were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and strength test. The biodegradability of SWAC film was also studied by determination of reduced sugar products after enzymatic hydrolysis. The surface morphology of the SWAC film was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the tensile strength and elongation of SWAC film decreased with the increase of starch content. The SWAC film showed significantly higher water absorbed content than waterbonre acrylate film. The biodegradability of SWAC film increased as the content of starch increased. The biodegradation of starch in SWAC film by ${\alpha}-amylase\;was\;about\;77{\%}$ of that of pure starch.
