  • Among biological information, GenBank, provided by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)of the United States, is a representative database on genetic information and is the most widely used by researchers around the world. Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) visits NCBI on a regular basis and downloads the latest version of GenBank to reorganize the information gathered there into a database. This database is provided for Korean researchers of science and technology through the Bio-KRISTAL search engine, developed by KISTI. This study aims to design a service model that links information on papers, patents, and biodiversity and other contents of NDSL, an integrated service on scientific and technological information run by KISTI, with GenBank's reference and organism fields and to develop a prototype system. For this purpose, this paper explores the possibility of a linkage and convergence service between heterogeneous content by: (a) collecting GenBank data from NCBI's FTP site; (b) dividing GenBank text files into basic and reference genetic information and restructuring them into a database; (c) extracting article and patent information from the GenBank reference fields to generate new tables; and (d) leveraging data mapping technology to implement a prototype system where GenBank and NDSL data are interlinked and provided.

  • The use of 16S rDNA is commonplace in the determination of prokaryotic species. However, it has limitations, and there are few studies at the genus level. We investigated conserved genes and metabolic pathways at the genus level in 28 strains of 13 genera of prokaryotes using the COG database (conserved genes) and MetaCyc database (metabolic pathways). Conserved genes compared to total genes (core genome) at the genus level ranged from 27.62%(Nostoc genus) to 71.76%(Spiribacter genus), with an average of 46.72%. The lower ratio of core genome meant the higher ratio of peculiar genes of a prokaryote, namely specific biological activities or the habitat may be varied. The ratio of common metabolic pathways at the genus level was higher than the ratio of core genomes, from 58.79% (Clostridium genus) to 96.31%(Mycoplasma genus), with an average of 75.86%. When compared among other genera, members of the same genus were positioned in the closest nodes to each other. Interestingly, Bacillus and Clostridium genera were positioned in closer nodes than those of the other genera. Archaebacterial genera were grouped together in the ortholog and metabolic pathway nodes in a phylogenetic tree. The genera Granulicella, Nostoc, and Bradyrhizobium of the Acidobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Proteobacteria phyla, respectively, were grouped in an ortholog content tree. The results of this study can be used for (i) the identification of common genes and metabolic pathways at each phylogenetic level and (ii) the improvement of strains through horizontal gene transfer or site-directed mutagenesis.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of LED safety block using the government database. To evaluate these effects, the night accident data was obtained from 2007 to 2011 from the database. At the LED-installed area, compared to the uninstalled area, the number of night traffic accidents, injured and mortality had decreased by 26.2%, 21.2% and 38.3%, respectively. The LED-installed intersections are safer than the LED-uninstalled roads from a traffic accidents perspective. In conclusion, a LED safety block is quite effective in decreasing the number of traffic accidents. Although this study was conducted using the data from Changwon city, where LED safety blocks have been installed so far, these results can provide valuable data to other cities considering the implementation of these LED safety blocks.

  • Cytochrome P450 14${\alpha}$-sterol demethylase enzyme (CYP51) is the target a of azole type antifungals. The azole blocks the ergosterol synthesis and thereby inhibits fungal growth. A three-dimensional (3D) homology model of CYP51 from Candida albicans was constructed based on the X-ray crystal structure of CYP51 from Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Using this model, the binding modes for the substrate (24-methylene-24, 25-dihydrolanosterol) and the known inhibitors (fluconazole, voriconazole, oxiconazole, miconazole) were predicted from docking. Virtual screening was performed employing Structure Based Focusing (SBF). In this procedure, the pharmacophore models for database search were generated from the protein-ligands interactions each other. The initial structure-based virtual screening selected 15 compounds from a commercial available 3D database of approximately 50,000 molecule library, Being evaluated by a cell-based assay, 5 compounds were further identified as the potent inhibitors of Candida albicans CYP51 (CACYP51) with low minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) range. BMD-09-01${\sim}$BMD-09-04 MIC range was 0.5 ${\mu}$g/ml and BMD-09-05 was 1 ${\mu}$g/ml. These new inhibitors provide a basis for some non-azole antifungal rational design of new, and more efficacious antifungal agents.

  • Recent studies in Big Data Analysis are showing promising results, utilizing the main memory for rapid data processing. In-memory computing technology can be highly advantageous when used with high-performing servers having tens of gigabytes of RAM with multi-core processors. The constraint in network in these infrastructure can be lessen by combining in-memory technology with distributed parallel processing. This paper discusses the research in the aforementioned concept applying to a test taxi hailing application without disregard to its underlying RDBMS structure. The application of IMDG technology in the application's backend API without restructuring the database schema yields 6 to 9 times increase in performance in data processing and throughput. Specifically, the change in throughput is very small even with increase in data load processing.

  • In this paper, we designed a facial feature(eyes, a moult and a nose) detection hardware based on the ICT transform which was developed for face detection earlier. Our design used a pipeline architecture for high throughput and it also tried to reduce memory size and memory access rate. The algerian and its hardware implementation were tested on the BioID database, which is a worldwide face detection test bed, and its facial feature detection rate was 100% both in software and hardware, assuming the face boundary was correctly detected. After synthesizing the hardware on Dongbu $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS library, its die size was $376,821{\mu}m^2$ with the maximum operating clock 78MHz.

  • A bio-inspired two-mode structural health monitoring (SHM) system based on the Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes (NB) classification method is discussed in this paper. To implement the molecular biology based Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) array concept in structural health monitoring, which has been demonstrated to be superior in disease detection, two types of array expression data have been proposed for the development of the SHM algorithm. For the micro-vibration mode, a two-tier auto-regression with exogenous (AR-ARX) process is used to extract the expression array from the recorded structural time history while an ARX process is applied for the analysis of the earthquake mode. The health condition of the structure is then determined using the NB classification method. In addition, the union concept in probability is used to improve the accuracy of the system. To verify the performance and reliability of the SHM algorithm, a downscaled eight-storey steel building located at the shaking table of the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE) was used as the benchmark structure. The structural response from different damage levels and locations was collected and incorporated in the database to aid the structural health monitoring process. Preliminary verification has demonstrated that the structure health condition can be precisely detected by the proposed algorithm. To implement the developed SHM system in a practical application, a SHM prototype consisting of the input sensing module, the transmission module, and the SHM platform was developed. The vibration data were first measured by the deployed sensor, and subsequently the SHM mode corresponding to the desired excitation is chosen automatically to quickly evaluate the health condition of the structure. Test results from the ambient vibration and shaking table test showed that the condition and location of the benchmark structure damage can be successfully detected by the proposed SHM prototype system, and the information is instantaneously transmitted to a remote server to facilitate real-time monitoring. Implementing the bio-inspired two-mode SHM practically has been successfully demonstrated.
