  • There are many studies reporting the average carbon dioxide levels in various indoor spaces. However, there have been a few studies showing how carbon dioxide concentration varied at many measurement points in one indoor space. In this study, the changes of indoor carbon dioxide concentration at classroom, library, and kindergarten were reported to find its carbon dioxide distribution change at various locations and altitudes. The maximum carbon dioxide concentration of the 3 sites were measured as 2,684, 2,295, and 1,526 ppm, respectively. These values exceeded the guideline concentration of 1,000 ppm for public places. The concentration of carbon dioxide was higher at upper area than lower area, and this is probably due to the rise of warm breathing air generated from students. In the upper area, the carbon dioxide concentration was higher at center area than four corners. However, in the lower area, the carbon dioxide concentration was higher at four corners than center area. Therefore, it could be concluded that the center of upper area is the best place for the installation of ventilation or carbon dioxide removal system.

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been shown to have a range of biological activities, including anti-carcinogenic, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-adipogenic and anti-diabetogenic effects. Recent reports also showed that CLA has free radical scavenging capacity, which may have health benefits for human beings. The current study was performed to investigate the effect of structured lipid (SL)-containing CLA on plasma lipids and hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity. Sprague-Dawley mts were fed 5% and 10% SL-containing normal diet for 6 wks and these groups were compared to rats fed 5% and 10% corn oil. In plasma lipids, total-cholesterol was not affected by fat source or dietary fat level while triglyceride level decreased significantly in groups fed 10% fat diet compared to the other groups. Plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) level decreased significantly in the S5 and S10 groups compared to the C5 and C10 groups, although hepatic TBARS level was not altered by fat source. On the other hand, in terms of hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity, superoxide dismutase activity increased in the S10 group, whereas catalase activity decreased in the S10 group. Glutathione peroxidase activity decreased significantly in the SL groups compared to the C5 group. Glutathione reductase activity increased and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity decreased in the C10 group compared to the C5 and C5 groups. In conclusion, the free radical scavenging activity of CLA seemed to suppress oxidative stress, which reduced lipid peroxidation resulting in lower hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chicory fructan fiber supplementation on bone mineral density, apparent absorption of minerals and serum parameters related to bone turnover in postmenopausal women. Twenty-six healthy Korean postmenopausal women participated in the study. 1be participants were randomly divided into two groups in a double-blind parallel design and took one of the supplements for 3 months; either a placebo of 8g maltodextrins/sucrose mixture (control group) or 8g chicory fructan fiber (fructan group). During the 3-month experimental period no differences were found in bone mineral density (BMD) between the two groups. Apparent calcium absorption significantly increased by 42% in the fructan group, while that of the control group decreased by 29% as compared to the values at baseline. Urinary calcium excretion was not significantly different between the group;;. After 3 months, the level of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was significantly lower in the fructan group than in the control group and deoxypyridinolin showed a trend toward a slight reduction. In conclusion, intake of chicory fructan fiber with a regular increases apparent calcium absorption in postmenopausal women.

  • This study was conducted to determine if YJ-1, a novel herbal complex from a mixture of six oriental herbs (Hydnocarpi Semen, Sesami Semen, Dictamni Radicis Cortex, Momordicae Semen, Xanthii Fructus, and Sophorae Radix), has therapeutic properties for the treatment of atopic dermatitis (AD). Using AD like symptom-induced NC/Nga mice by 1-chloro 2,4-dinitrobenzene (DNCB), the effectiveness of YJ-1 on AD was evaluated. Elidel cream$^{(R)}$ (1% pimecrolimus) was used as a control. Dermal application of YJ-1 reduced major clinical signs of AD such as erythema, pruritus, lichenification, edema/escoriations, and dryness. Interestingly, YJ-1 more improved AD-related symptoms including decrease of spleen weight, IL-4, and IgE level in the serum as well as reduction of scratching counts and clinical skin severity in the NC/Nga AD mouse model. Especially, treatment of YJ-1 at 20% in NC/Nga mice more effected than Elidel cream. These results suggest that the ointment of YJ-1 may enhance the process of AD healing by alleviating allergic reaction and has potential for therapeutic reagent for the treatment of AD.

  • In order to compare what kinds of transcription factors are associated with the inhibition of preadipocyte cell proliferation, we prepared several grape extracts and tested the expression patterns by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. As a result, 50% ethanol extract of Campbell early seed inhibited adipogenesis derived from the MDI solution. Extract of Campbell early seed was significantly inhibited lipid droplet formation and expression of molecular factors C/EBP-alpha and delta in 3T3-L1 cells. It is suggested that grape extracts of fractions would be a good candidate for the development of regional skin fat modulator.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the natural menopause age of middle-aged women in Korea and to analyse various factors affecting them. For the collection of date, 1,140 women aged between 45-54 were selected through stratified sampling technics in Seoul and at a rual area in Kyong KiProvince. They were interviewed from Nov. 1 through Dec. 31,1987 by use of questionnaires made after pilot study had been performed twice. Among them the final subjects for analysis were restricted to only those who had experienced menopause or irregular menstruation during the past one year, the number of which was total 410:206 in urban and 204 in rural area. For the analysis, menopause age was used as dependent variables while fertility variables, socio-economic variables, bio-physical varibles, and insight of life variables were classified as independent variables. Dependent variables such as menopause was tested and analysed by descriptive statistical methods(e.g., frequency, percentage, mean, $X^2-test.$ t-test, ANOVA). The relation between menopause age and independent variables was analysed by use of Pearson's correlation coefficients. For the analysis of various factors affecting menopause age, multiple stepwise regression method was used. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. The natural menopause age of Korean women were 47.2 mean age: it was 47.7 and 46.7 mean age in urban and rural area respectively, which revealed that the former was later then the latter by one year. And the recollective error on menopause starting age between the menopause group and the group who had experienced irregular menstruation during the past one year was 0.4-0.7 year. 2. The main factors affecting the menopause age were (1) the duration of marital life, (2) the duration of oral pill use, (3) insight of life and economic status, (4) educational background. (5) menarche, (6) usual menstruation amount, (7) electic charge. and (8) area. These factors. altogether, could explain $18.4\%$ of factors related with menopause, and they took the high percentage in the order mentioned.

  • The optimum extraction of phenolic compounds from whole Rosa multiflora Thunberg fruits was accomplished using 70% ethanol, which produced extracts that generated a zone of inhibition around Helicobacter pylori of 13 mm when $200{\mu}g/mL$ phenolic compounds were applied. In this study, the quality of white bread baked from dough containing added Rosa multiflora Thunberg extracts was investigated. No deterioration of product quality factors including hydration of wheat flour, formation of dough and internal visual characteristics of dough was observed. However, white bread containing Rosa multiflora Thunberg extracts had a wet texture because of the high moisture level, as well as a high number of irregular bubble holes when compared to the control. Nevertheless, there were no remarkable differences between the sample and the control.

  • This study examined the main factors for activating rural tourism of Jeollabuk-do using big data analysis. The tourism big data was gathered from public open data sources and social network services (SNS), and the analysis tools, 'Opinion Mining', 'Text Mining', and 'Social Network Analysis(SNA)' were used. The opinion mining and text mining analysis identified the key local contents of the 14 areas of Jeollabuk-do and the evaluations of customers on rural tourism. Social network analysis detected the relationships between their contents and determined the importance of the contents. The results of this research showed that each location in Jeollabuk-do had their specific contents attracting visitors and the number of contents affected the scale of tourists. In addition, the number of visitors might be large when their tourism contents were strongly correlated with the other contents. Hence, strong connections among their contents are a point to activate rural tourism. Social network analysis divided the contents into several clusters and derived the eigenvector centralities of the content nodes implying the importance of them in the network. Tourism was active when the nodes at high value of the eigenvector centrality were distributed evenly in every cluster; however the results were contrary when the nodes were located in a few clusters. This study suggests an action plan to extend rural tourism that develop valuable contents and connect the content clusters properly.

  • Marking biocontrol bacteria is an essential step to monitor bacterial behavior in natural environments before application in agricultural ecosystem. In this study, we presented the simple green fluorescent protein (GFP) reporter system driven by the promoter active in Bacillus species for tagging of the biocontrol bacteria. A constitutive promoter P43 from Bacillus subtilis was fused to an enhanced promoterless gfp gene by overlap extension PCR. The GFP expression was demonstrated by the high fluorescence intensity detected in B. subtilis and Escherichia coli transformed with the P43-gfp fusion construct, respectively. The GFP reporter system was further investigated in two bacterial biocontrol strains B. licheniformis and Pseudomonas fluorescens. When the reconstructed plasmid pWH34G was introduced into B. licheniformis, GFP level measured with the fluorescence intensity in B. licheniformis was almost equivalent to that in B. subtilis. However, GFP expression level was extremely low in other biocontrol bacteria P. fluorescens by transposon based stable insertion of the P43-gfp construct into the bacterial chromosome. This study provides information regarding to the efficient biomarker P43-gfp fusion construct for bio-control Bacillus species.
